Excerpt

He bit back a curse and strode to his truck. Unlocking the door, he tossed his bags in the backseat, climbed in, and slammed the door. He turned the key and backed out resolutely, trying to ignore the fact that she had risen, her hands on her bags, and that her hood had slipped from her head. She didn’t move forward, didn’t call out to him to wait. She just stood there, watching him go. He shifted into drive and made it 100 feet before he let his eyes find her figure in the rear view mirror.

“Unbelievable,” Finn ground out, and slammed the wheel with the palm of his hand. He slowed to a stop. “UNBELIEVABLE!” he reprimanded himself even as he engaged the brake, pushed the door open and lurched out of the idling vehicle. Bonnie still stood with her two duffle bags in her hands, her grandma’s stolen purse on her shoulder, but now her lips were slightly parted, clearly stunned that he’d stopped.

And she wasn’t the only one. Finn felt like he was split right down the middle. The rational part of his brain, the side that ensured his survival and his sanity, was outraged, demanding that he keep driving, while the side of his brain that was connected to his heart and other parts of his body was breathing a sigh of relief that he hadn’t let her get away.

She didn’t move, as if she was sure that the moment she did he would change his mind, climb back in the Blazer, and drive away. So he walked back to her, battling with himself every step of the way. He walked until they were practically toe to toe, her dark eyes wide and lifted to his, his hands shoved into his pockets so he wouldn’t strangle her. But his pockets felt like manacles around his wrists and he yanked them free, fisting them in the front of Bonnie’s puffy pink coat and raising her up on her toes and into him until they weren’t toe to toe any longer but nose to nose. His emotions were a big tangled ball of anger, longing, and injustice all wrapped up in impatient outrage, and Finn couldn’t separate one feeling from another. So he did the only thing he could do. He kissed her.

It wasn’t a soft kiss or a sweet kiss. It was a ‘you-scared-me-and-messed-with-me-and-I’m-mad-and-relieved-and-unbelievably-frustrated’ kind of kiss. It was teeth and lips and nipping and bruising, and Finn couldn’t make himself stop, even when Bonnie’s teeth tugged at his lower lip and her hands pulled at his hair. Especially then. And when she wrapped her arms around his neck and stepped up onto his toes so that she could press herself flush against him, he decided revenge really was sweet, and enjoyed the feel of her face against his, the wet heat of her mouth making him forget he was standing in the middle of a Motel 6 parking lot with his ride rumbling behind him, the driver side door still hanging wide open. The rational part of his brain was stunned into peaceful silence…for all of ten seconds.

About The Author

Kirsty Moseley
My name is Kirsty. I was born in Hertfordshire, England. In 2000 I moved to Norfolk, it was there that I met my husband, Lee. Now, what can I say about Lee, apart from everyone should have one? He's my biggest supporter, and I wouldn't be where I am today without his encouragement and endless support. He is my inspiration behind most of my male leads, I always try to bring a little of him in somewhere, be it his kindness, selflessness, or just his ability to make me feel treasured.

In 2005, I was gifted with the birth of my son. He is, and always will be, the best thing I have ever done in my life. As you can probably tell, I'm a very proud mummy. I have always been interested in writing, but after the birth of my son I accidentally came across an amateur writing site. After a couple of months of just reading on there, I finally plucked up the courage and posted one of my stories. I was shocked and overwhelmed by the support of readers on there and they gave me the confidence to get where I am today. In April 2012, I self-published my first novel ‘The Boy Who Sneaks in my Bedroom Window’. And in October 2012 I took the plunge again, publishing my second novel, 'Always You.' Lastly, if I had to sum myself up in one word, it would probably be ‘daydreamer’ – but unlike most of my school teachers, I don’t necessarily view that as a bad thing. After all, I read somewhere once that books are like waking dreams….

Veiled Innocence by Ella Frank

Excerpt One – Mr. McKendrick’s POV
Copyright © 2014 by Ella Frank
I couldn’t believe she’d followed me home.

I was sitting in my truck with my hands wrapped around the steering wheel. I could see her in the rearview mirror, and my heart pounded in my chest as I thought about my next move.

I’d purposely waited to leave until she had gone home. It had been quite the wait, but I couldn’t afford to put myself within close quarters of this girl.

She was undisciplined and clearly had never heard the word no in her life. She wanted things she couldn’t have, and I needed to make that much clearer than in our previous conversations.

I could see the hood of her car peeking out from behind one of the neighbor’s hedges and wished I could forget she was there, but this time she had crossed too many lines. She needed to know that this behavior could not continue.

Pushing open my truck door, I climbed out and locked it before walking down the drive. I strode purposefully along the sidewalk and tried to think of exactly what I was going to say to this student of mine.

Please stop following me? Please stop hitting on me?

They both sounded ridiculous, and I realized that at this point the word please needed to be thrown right out the fucking window.

Polite wasn’t going to work with Addison Lancaster. It was time to get serious, maybe even mean, because this girl had the ability to destroy me.

“Temptation had come to visit, and her steely determination would likely destroy us both.”

There are a few authors where no matter what they write I read it; I know that I am going to get a good book so I don’t even bother reading the blurb. This is one of those authors and one of those books. I totally went into this book blind and I am glad I did. As soon as I started reading and suddenly realised that this was going to be a student/teacher book I was excited. This is one of the genres that I love to read. We all love the forbidden romance aspect; the fact that it is deemed so wrong immediately piques my interest and gets my brain going into overdrive. We all had crushes on one teacher or another at school, but what would have happened if you actually acted upon them and the feelings were mutual? The possibilities are endless, invariably they never end well, but you cannot help who you fall in love with, if fate intended for it to happen, it will happen. I just sat back reading and enjoyed the ride.

“I’m broken.”
“No, Addison. Just perfectly imperfect. None of us are perfect.”

Addison is one of “the popular” girls who makes sure that she excels at everything she does, but she is far from happy. This is all part of the “Addison” façade, she pushes herself to her limits in the vain attempt at getting love and acceptance from her parents. If she could be the best, perhaps her parents would learn to like and love her again, maybe they could be proud, maybe just maybe life could go back to the way it was, but that is a pipe dream. Addison is OCD, she has her little rituals, she constantly counts and constantly listens to her watch…tick tick tock. You know that something has happened in the past, but this is only gradually eased out during the story thus drawing you into Addison’s internal pain. She is extremely guarded, nobody knows the real “Addison” she hasn’t wanted to let anyone in, not doctors, not psychiatrists, she keeps everything bottled up, her own misguided guilt eating her away slowly but surely.

“Because I was late.”

Grayson is a history teacher and whilst his first meeting with Addison is not at all pleasant, there is something about her that has him intrigued. He can see through the walls and defences that she has in place, he knows that there is more to the girl than meets the eye and he cannot help but want to know and help. He knows it is wrong, but why does it feel so right? Grayson has his own problems, his back story is somewhat vague in this book and once again little snippets are slowly released throughout the book. He is in his early thirties and his dad is sick, his illness being the reason he is now in his current position. He is in a bad place mentally, trying to come to terms with his dad’s impending death and trying to make the most of the time that he has left. He has left his “old life” behind to make this move and is struggling to adapt, but all that changes when Addison walks into his classroom.

“You are so fucking dangerous that I’m not sure I’ll survive you.”

When Addison walks into that classroom and sets eyes on Grayson, her world changes. Fatal Attraction style, Addison relentlessly pursues him, overwhelmed by her instant attraction to him she goes all out to capture her prey and Grayson at first does not want to be caught. This is an unusual dynamic and was refreshing to read. Addison’s metamorphosis from student to vixen had me page turning and even though you knew it was wrong, Ella’s words made it right and you couldn’t help but root for them.

““You’re going to be the death of me.” Life is full of ironies, because with him, I’d never felt more alive.”

Addison’s internal counting and constant watch listening is apparent to everyone, it is so much part of her that she cannot help it. The other teachers know the reasons behind it and as such ignore it but you could not help but see the pity that they had for her. You wanted to know what had happened that was so bad that all the teachers gave her such a wide berth and I was relieved when Grayson finally asked the question. The only time that the counting and the tick tick tock disappears is when Addison is with Grayson, he grounds her, she feels safe, she feels like Addison.

“You make it go away.”
“I make what go away?”
“The chaos.”

You always know that in these situations it can never end well and you are constantly on the edge of your seat waiting for the whole thing to capitulate in front of you. You are well aware throughout the book that what they are doing is “wrong” none more so than with Grayson’s constant battle with himself. He knows what he is doing is unacceptable, he knows that it could destroy him, but when the siren calls, he cannot help but come.

“Just as Cupid revived Psyche with a kiss, he revived you with words.”

I was totally entranced in this story; from the first to last page I savoured every page, every word. From love, to pain, to grief, to conflict, to consciences to what the hell, you will run the gamut of emotions with this one. The hopeless romantic in me defends their love vehemently, at the end of the day, this is a love story, Grayson’s job be damned. It was beautiful to read, to immerse yourself in, and to drown in, as always Ella’s writing has that knack of totally consuming you from start to finish. Fantastic book, totally loved it and one that I will certainly be reading again.

“Yes there were moments of madness, but what is love without some madness?
It wasn’t wrong.
No-it was just misunderstood.”

"Love causes war and causes death, breaks souls and breaks lives. It runs people into the ground, makes them behave like moronic, immoral beasts, before it dances off, leaving only destruction in its wake -  hearts blown wide open for the whole world to see."

It's no secret that I am a huge Karina Halle fan so I usually dive right into her books and speed read them because I'm desperate to see what happens in the end. This book was totally different. It took me a long time to read, but it's because It was so good, I wanted to soak up every single word. In short, I thought it was the best book Karina has written.

It has a different feel to what she has written before, no paranormal and no suspense, it's not an "action" book like the Artist Trilogy. It's all about the journey the main character makes and about love. This book does contain cheating but it's like nothing I've ever read. Usually the main character is the one being cheated on, or perhaps is the cheater, but in this book we see what it's like to be "the other woman".

Canadian Vera Miles has never felt she belonged anywhere and so wants to get away, experience something new and so she signs up for teaching conversational English to Spanish business men and women in Spain during her summer break. A piece of advice is given to her before she arrives at the resort - don't fall in love, and she doesn't intend to, that's not her style....

Until she meets Mateo Casalles that is. Totally gorgeous, confident and unfortunately married Mateo. Although Vera is attracted to him, she would never want to be involved in cheating - she's seen the results of that.

As Vera settles in she starts to understand what the advice meant as she sees other people on the program hooking up together. She builds friendships and starts to feel like she belongs. One of the close friendships she forms is with Mateo, she looks forward to her teaching sessions with him (well who wouldn't!!) and spends time with him during their free time. Although nothing physical has happened between them, people start assuming they are sleeping together because of their close friendship. This leads Vera to question whether what they are doing is really as innocent as she once thought.

"Sometimes I thought I was a terrible person"

Vera does struggle with her feelings towards Mateo and sometimes questions whether their friendship and actions are morally wrong. I think that is why this book has so much power. Everyone usually sees "the other woman" as just as much to blame, and they do need to take some responsibility, but it does makes you stop and think how she sometimes may feel and what she might be going through.

It isn't all about Mateo and Vera, it's also about Vera finding herself, finding friends and finding a place to belong. It's about a journey Vera is on, but all journeys must come to an end.

"There will be nights when you will feel alone and lost" he murmured in my hair. "Where I will feel alone and lost. When that happens, I want us both to remember this, right now. Bring our thoughts back to this room, this moment. Where we aren't lonely. Where we are both found."

So what happens after the program is over and everyone has to go back to their lives? When reality hits? When you realise there is a world outside the program? I loved that this book is spilt into three parts, which include part 1 which is in Spain and part 2 which follows Vera in the aftermath of the program.

"Don't you ever think that sometimes love isn't enough? That it can't over come everything?"

This book is definitely an emotional roller coaster ride. It has many ups and downs and there will be many of you that cry. Did I cry? Yes, but for me it's because I felt that Karina did such an amazing job at making you feel what the characters are going through, it did open old wounds.

The characters are well written and anyone who has been cheated on, been a cheater, been "the other woman", or has fallen in love or lost in love, will find a connection to one or more of the characters in this book and let's face it, that pretty much covers all of us!!

I will warn you, you will definitely fall in love with Mateo. You will love Vera. You may get frustrated at some of the decisions they make, you will feel pain and you will feel love, but those are the best books aren't they? If your looking for a story about perfect love this isn't it. But if you're looking for a book that has real life love, that often doesn't come at the right time, this book is for you. It's a definite must read in my opinion, but take your time, savour each word, each feeling.

"What is love in English"
I raised my brows. "Love, in English, is love"
"What is it in Spanish?"
I was so enthralled by his hypnotic eyes, I could barely remember. "Amore"
He shook his head ever so slightly. "No. Love in Spanish is
you"

“Yes, there are two paths you can go by,

but in the long run

There’s still time to change the road you’re on.” Stairway to Heaven – Led Zepplin

This is going to have to be a short but sweet review. It would be a travesty to say too much and spoil it, but this one certainly runs you through a gamut of emotions. I have always been #teamRiley and although I totally and utterly adore him, after reading this book my allegiances are wavering. This by no way means I think any less of Riley but after seeing the friendship blossom between Tara and Cole even I have to admit they may just be the “better fit.” Arggggggghhhhhhhhhh I can’t believe I just typed that…I must erase that sentence…I must, I must, I must…

Songbird Caged starts off where Songbird finished. Riley is absent for this entire book as he is in the army. This leaves Tara with a lot of time on her hands to reflect and also be lonely. Tara has always valued her friendship with Cole, none more so than now and when life throws shit at you, it is your friends that you need and in Riley’s absence, that falls to Cole.

It was great to see more of Cole and by see more, I mean “the real Cole,” there is a lot more there than meets the eye and Tara and Cole have a lot more in common than I ever thought. I do feel that they are incredibly well suited, Cole has made it blatantly obvious that he will do whatever he can to ensure that he and Tara become one, but he also respects the promise that Tara made to Riley, even if he doesn’t agree with it. As much as it pains me to say this, I do think they are soul mates, they have this undeniable connection that Tara will never have with Riley. It makes you question everything you read and believed in Songbird.

“I saw you two together tonight; I mean really saw you together, for the first time. You are so alike in so many ways, it’s scary. You finish each other’s sentences, you laugh at the same silly jokes that aren’t really funny…” – Kelli

Tara promised to wait the six months for Riley, but it is during his absence that Tara starts to analyse everything, they are so different but she can’t deny the chemistry that they have, but is that all it is? Things happen and with Riley stuck in some war torn country there is not a lot he can do about it, Tara makes decisions without him that he doesn’t necessarily agree with, but Tara wants to move on, she needs something to occupy her time. I did think that Riley was a bit old fashioned in some ways, especially about the man being the provider but he needs to get over that and let Tara do something for herself. However, the way that Tara handled it did have me angry and I felt so sorry for Riley being stuck where he was and not being able to be there for her when he obviously wanted to.

This is one of those love triangles where I am at the stage that I don’t really mind who she ends up with. It is funny as usually you have a clear front runner in your head, but both of these guys are really nice guys, so you can’t actually hate one. I am now more believing of “lust” with Riley and “love” with Cole, but whether Tara will actually see that I don’t know. I really am torn and that is certainly a novelty.

There is one particular moment that I could have killed Cole, sometimes the “douche” stills comes to the surface at the most inopportune moment. I could see why, but what he did was so uncalled for. I didn’t think he could come back from that but Lisa managed to persuade me, again!

So, I am on the fence, it is painful (they have spikes you know!) As much as I want her to be with Riley, I can’t deny that she should be with Cole. However, if that is the way the story goes in Songbird Freed, then Riley better get a happy ever after. My biggest torment is that Riley truly believes that he has found his soul mate in Tara, he loves her totally and unconditionally and I really don’t want to see him get hurt, to the point where I wished death upon him. Thinking about it though, I wonder if Lisa can write ménage?

Oh one more thing…#teamPops! So freakin adorable and so cheeky, I love him! The video…gahhhhhh the video!

“Cole, for goodness sake, tell her how you feel before it’s too late.”

“You came to see me…told me you had met someone special…your eyes met, and you felt like you couldn’t breathe, but you’d also never felt so alive.”

“live your life with Cole, and make every second count.”

A fab instalment to what is becoming an amazing trilogy, I cannot wait for book 3 and I really truly need it now! I can’t wait to see what way this is going to go, I just know that the rest of the journey is going to kill me.

Excerpt:

“I’d like to take you out.”
I looked at Cole, slightly amused. “We go out all the time.”
“No, we go to your place, we come here. We go to the gym, for a run on the beach, or we go to Songbirds. We don’t go out.”
We were sitting on Cole’s couch in his apartment, looking at light fittings for Reds on the Internet.
He was wringing his hands. “Would you like to go out with me?” he asked.
I frowned. “What, like on a date?”
“If that’s what you want to call it. I don’t know, I’ve never been on a date. But if going out to dinner and then a club together is a date, then sure, let’s call it a date.”
I looked at him warily. “You do know I’m engaged, right? You haven’t forgotten?”
He shrugged. “In theory. But there’s no harm in letting me take you out. I mean, officially take you out—on a date.”
I had to think about this for a minute. Was it asking for trouble to let him believe we could actually date when I had made a commitment to Riley?
“You know, even if you pay for dinner, I’m not going to sleep with you,” I said with a smile.
“So what’s the point of paying for dinner, then?” he asked cheekily. He took hold of my hands in his. “I wouldn’t expect you to sleep with anyone on a first date. You’re not that kind of girl.”
I exhaled slowly, weighing up how to respond. “Okay, we can go out on three conditions.”
He nodded.
“Firstly, we need to have other people there, so maybe Marcus and Nicole can come with us.”
“Like a double date,” he said, teasingly.
I chuckled, and shook my head. “Secondly, you have to stop calling it a date.”
He grinned at me cheekily.
“Thirdly, you have to wear your Calvin Klein jeans, the ones that fit your butt really well.”

About the Author:

Friday Frights ~ PNR Reviews ~ Blood Torn (Blackthorn Series) by Lindsay J Pryor

Reviewed by Shirley ~ 5 Stars

This is book 3 in this seriously good Blackthorn series. A series I highly recommend you read.

It is about the depressing district of Blackthorn, where paranormals have been relocated to live together so they are far away from the human population. There are three main leaders, who keep a tight control of this rough community.

This story is about one leader, the Alpha of the Lycans, Jask Tao, a very hot looking male and the unlikely meeting of Sophia, an Alliance fighter, hell bent on killing all vampires and all their leaders.

Their first meeting couldn't be more bizarre with Sophia chained to a wall with dead vampires at her feet. Sophia is a bit bemused as she has just realized that she is now a Serryn, deadly to vampires if they take her blood, and then in walks Jask.

Jask takes her back to his compound, and that's where their game of nerves begins. With both of them not willing to back down, wary of each other as they both are surprised as neither of them are what they had been led to believe about each other.

All Sophia could think of was escaping, and if she could bring Jask down before she left… all the better.

Sophia couldn't help goading Jask, but while she was she couldn't help feeling this sizzle between them, a feeling she couldn't define. Jask, not letting Sophia out of his sight, insisted she shared his quarters and his bed.

"Have you ever been with a human?" she asked, unable to take the silence.

"They sob a lot."

Her gaze snapped across her shoulder at him.

"I think it’s the pace," he said, not having flinched.

"Apparently it’s true that we're feral. During the sex act more than any other time."

Jask had thrown her jibe right back at her, and then went to sleep, leaving Sophia confused. With the sexual tension building between these two you could feel it running through all their taunting jibes to each other.

With Jask thinking he can keep his feelings in check around Sophia and with Sophia fighting the feelings she felt towards this handsome Lycan with her goading him to try and get a response out of him…until finally he snapped, getting her on a mattress.

"You will look at me the whole time I'm inside you." he said. "And you will not look away until I'm done."

Her heart pounded. Her skin prickled.

As he pushed into her, everything in that moment stopped. Everything became a haze. Nothing felt real. His thrust was exquisite.

Steady but forceful, breaking inside her in one complete move, his breath held as tightly as hers.

To Sophia it was so much more than she ever thought possible, making her all the more determined to get away, and when she finally managed to escape it was to find everything she knew had been wiped out, and Jask, he could not come to terms what had happened to him, his pack, his people it was just too much.

Someone was going to pay for everything they had done, and these two combining their strengths was going to make sure it happened.

Ms Pryor, I really think this series awesome. I reviewed book 1 previously and I have read book 2, I couldn't put it down. This book is no different a winner all round. Please don't make us all wait too long for book 4 cannot wait to catch up with everything going on in Blackthorn as I think it’s going to be a cracker of a book.

Book Description:

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now. Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. “Not my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.”

“How did it happen?” I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.

She was coy. “The way it usually happens.”

“Did you make the first move?”

Another shrug. “Why not?”

I swear, a shrug and a “why not?” were the Spaniards’ go-to answer for everything.

“Well, then I guess it seems safe—and a little boring now—to tell you that I have a crush on someone.”

Her brows quirked up. “Other than Mateo?”

“What?”

“You are sleeping with Mateo, no?”

“WHAT?!”

“No?”

“No!” I exclaimed, appalled. “Why does everyone keep thinking that?”

“Because you are always together,” she said simply. She took a sip of wine. “The attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.”

“He’s married!”

“Yes, but you are not.”

I shook my head adamantly. “It’s wrong. I don’t want to be the other woman. I’ve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I can’t put Mateo’s daughter through that,” I said. “Or his wife,” I quickly added.

“That doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings for anyone else.”

“Yes, it does mean that.”

“Maybe you are meant to be together.”

“We’re not! There isn’t even a together. We’re just friends. I haven’t done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.”

Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. “If you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.”

She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.

“What do you mean, the way he looks at me?” I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.

She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. “You do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you like…like you’re his favorite food.”

“Favorite food?”

She lit her cigarette. “Yes. You’re like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.”

I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. That’s how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure that’s how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.

“And yes,” she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, “that is also how you look at him.” Great, a mind reader. “But you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.”

“There is nothing to know,” I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. “We are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.”

“A crush?” she questioned. “Vera, I think you’re in love with him.”

No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.

“You can’t fall in love in a week,” I told her heatedly.

“You can fall in love in a second,” she said with a snap of her fingers. “The heart has no regard for time.”

With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasn’t forbidden.

I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.

He was on the phone, smiling.

His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.

Holy fuck.

For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.

From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body I’d ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although David’s skin tone wasn’t as mesmerizing. Mateo’s color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.

And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.

I really, really wanted to believe her.

Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, “No, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didn’t injure myself.” He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.

He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldn’t come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasn’t what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.

“Vera!” I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phone’s receiver to his chest, grinning at me. “I need to ask you your question.”

“What?” I asked, hoping it was quick.

“Who is your favorite Spaniard here?”

Seriously?

And yet I couldn’t lie to him.

“You,” I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.
