me to lose her.”
Many moons ago I was trawling Amazon for a book to read,
there was this black cover with red, white and blue writing that had just been
released and being patriotic I bought it. It was Jay McLean’s first book; it
was when I fell in love with Jay McLean’s writing. Every book since Jay McLean
has written a winner, this author has certainly found her groove and now she is
punishing me with every single book because one thing I can guarantee with a
Jay McLean book is that I’m gonna cry, and cry I did. Once again Jay McLean
pressed every single emotional button in my body, she wrung them out like a pro
and literally had my heart beating in the palm of her hand.
“Love doesn’t die just because
one heart stops beating. When you love someone, you have the same heartbeat and
it’s still there, just not as strong.”
This book was accomplished writing, perfectly balanced,
fantastic dialogue, great chemistry and it makes you feel…from the hairs on
your head to the tips of your toes. However, Jay McLean’s trademark wit is
prevalent throughout as she masterfully brings her characters to life with some
fantastic personalities and I cannot wait for more from this family.
Lucas can be read as a standalone but the Preston family
have been introduced in the More Than series, Lucas is Lucy’s brother. Lucas
Preston is the oldest of the Preston boys and he is literally the glue that
holds them together. Lucas has a lot on his shoulders, he has college and
track, he has siblings that just want to murder one and other but he also has
his best friend, Laney and it is her that calms his storm, she is his anchor,
his confidante.
“And so without meaning to,
without wanting to, I started to fall in like with a girl that would become my
best friend. My confidant. My courage…A girl who would later crush my heart and
destroy me.”
Laney was deserted by her mother and raised by her father
but when times were hard they had to move so that her dad could find gainful employment
and support them. He upped sticks and began working for the Preston’s. The
Preston’s are a family that everyone wants to be a part of, where family values
ring true and no matter the squabbling their family were always there for one
and other, supportive in every capacity and a house packed to the rafters with
love. The Preston’s take Laney and her father under their wing and Laney soon
becomes cemented as one of their own. From eleven years old Laney and Lucas
were inseparable, the strongest of bonds was made and the family were taking
bets as to when they would get married, but being best friends was first and
foremost and both were afraid of blurring that line.
“But I’m not done with us…”
“Yeah, Lane. I think you are.”
Laney has been in love with Lucas since forever, but she has
never been sure if the feelings were reciprocated. Lucas has been in love with
Laney forever, but he has never been sure if the feelings were reciprocated…and
no this is not just another miscommunication story, it was so much more.
I am not going to go into plot specifics, but this is a
friends to lovers story and these two certainly put you through the mill before
they get there. The story is intense at times, it does cover some tough
subjects but this is a story with guts, grit and raw emotion, a Jay McLean
special.
“And I think, ultimately, that’s
what true love is, you know? To want to be someone’s hero when they’re faced
with villains. To want to the one who saves them. To be their Wonderwall.”
So…why not 5…this could have easily been a five-star book,
in fact it was until a few little things began to niggle at me, and this is
more my personal preference than anything wrong with the story itself. This
book was unputdownable though, it was one of those reads where the world ceased
to exist…much to my husband’s annoyance. Jay McLean once again captivated me
with another fantastic family and once again has me chomping at the bit for the
next book.
