“You will not escape your destiny. I choose who comes and who goes. Who will live and who will die. Me.”

I have adored this trilogy, and for a debut author, Jessica Ruben has certainly done herself proud. Vincent and Eve is an accomplished trilogy, each book bringing something new to the table and with each book the growth in Jessica Ruben’s writing is ever present. While this book is not my favourite of the trilogy, it was a great conclusion to their story, and I lapped it up by the pages.

“I thought coming to prison was the right thing to do. The honorable thing. What a delusion I lived under. There’s nothing but death and degradation. I whisper prayers into the cell, begging for redemption as I roll in and out of consciousness.”

This story begins some years after Reckoning and herein lies the crux of my problem. The gap is huge and the amount of growing up these two did in those years was vast, and we as readers were not privy to it. Therefore the feel of the characters in this book was a far cry from the previous two. I loved that they grew, don’t get me wrong, but I would have liked to have seen and felt some of it, I think that would have helped with the character connection, which for me, wasn’t as strong in this book.

“But now I’m back, and I want you. Need you. Fucking love you babe and always have.”

Vincent and Eve together though, still hot as ever, but I did feel that their reunion was a bit too easy and brushed under the carpet a little. These two were fiery individuals, so I was expecting sparks and fireworks, not flickering embers. But, Jessica Ruben delivers an action-packed story, full of twists and turns that certainly leave the reader expecting the unexpected. It is this plot that really carries the book and for me, made those pages turn faster.

“I died for you, Vincent…”
“Well, I lived for you, Eve.”

This book was emotional at times and definitely got my heart an soul stirring for these two characters, but it was the action that really made this book. This was a jigsaw, with many ill-fitting pieces until Jessica Ruben wants to reader to find out what is going on in her author brain. Compelling, addictive, yet heart-breaking at times their journey to redemption and each other was fraught, but this was a fight with heart, passion, trust and belief, honour and of strength and survival. Only the fittest win. This was a great conclusion, while I would have liked a little more in certain areas the others more than made up for it.

“You’re as strong as they come. But you don’t have to eat shit in order to prove strength.”

Book Description:

A troubled marriage. A one week hall pass.

Gabriella Moore has it all; a beautiful husband, two adorable children, and a dream home. Yet, when, by chance, she befriends Eli online, she falls fast. And hard. She knows she must let him go, and saying goodbye is one of the hardest things she’s ever done, but she resolves to move on and forget about her beautiful stranger.

But then… she makes an unexpected discovery, and it shakes her perfect world to its core. Rules don’t apply anymore. An arrangement is made, and her husband gives her just one week with Eli. The rules are clear: One week. Sex only. No contact thereafter. Seems simple enough, but it’s never simple when it comes to love.

Praise for One Week:

“Roya Carmen's storytelling captures you and makes you want to be part of that world. This book hooked me from the beginning; I couldn't put it down and got to the end thinking "but I want more!" - A Book Lover's Emporium

“As soon as I saw the blurb I knew I needed to read thisbook. It's not an easy read, it might shake you a little, but it's worth it.” - The Bookery Review

"You are the Queen of theforbidden. I loved this story. It captivated me from the beginning..." - Geneva (reader)

Read the Prologue:

Prologue
Dear Eli,
First, I just want to tell you how much you mean to me. And that’s the problem… you mean more to me than you should. I keep telling myself that we’re just friends, but I think we both know we’re more than that. I’m not exactly sure what I am to you, but you are everything to me. I think about you all the time, every hour of every day. It’s a little ridiculous, to be honest. I am a happily married mother of two, and I should start acting like it.
I’ve really enjoyed our conversations about art and life, but it’s time for me to end this. For a bachelor like you, this is just a fun distraction I’m sure. But for me, it’s so much more, and it really shouldn’t be. What I’m doing with you is not right. I love my husband and my children, so it’s because of them that I need to say goodbye.
I’ll always remember you. : ) And I’ll smile every time I do.
Your friend,
Gabriella
It’s just one or two paragraphs, but I’ve second-guessed every word, have pored over every single sentence, debating whether the right sentiments were expressed. I’ve spent over an hour going over it. Over and over. I’ve read the message more times than I can count. The last thing I want to do is hurt him. He just doesn’t fit into the picture. My picture; John and me, and the kids, and the white picket fence, the perfect life. He should have never been in it. Some days, I wish I’d never met him. Others, I’m so glad I did. For the brief time that I knew him, he truly was one of the best things in my life.
My heart is hammering, threatening to burst as I swallow hard, and finally press on the ‘Send’ arrow. As soon as I do, I feel sick. A heavy weight presses down at the center of my chest, threatening to crush me. I’ve never felt so horrible, so lost.
But it had to be done. I tell myself I’ve done the right thing. For my family. For me. For him.
Our relationship flashes before my eyes — the laughs, the jokes, every single conversation, every wink, every little skip of my heart, his beautiful eyes, and his sweet smile. Damn… his smile.
It all started innocently enough, as these things often do…

“One week is not enough.”

This author always crosses lines, so going into this one I knew there would be cheating of some sort, whether it be complicit or not, and as ever, Roya Carmen didn’t disappoint. Cheating does not bother me at all, I’m not fazed by it in books, unfortunately it is a part of life for some and I love a real romance. Real relationships with real issues and Roya Carmen certainly puts her own spin on this one.

“The only flawed part of a perfect moment is its ending.”

Some parts of this book I loved, it was ticking every box. I had the warm and fuzzies at times and in others blasts of hot anger, but this is nothing new with a Roya Carmen read. Any emotion evoked from a reader is a good one and means that the author has done her job and done it well. The emotional side was definitely on point, the moral side…questionable. The one-week hall pass was my biggest peeve in this book, it was the way it was manipulated, used as a weapon and only caused more misery. I felt the torment and the agony and whether the person deserved it or not, the method of revenge could have been done with a lot more grace and finesse. However, it did make for entertaining reading.

“I’ve only ever loved two women in my life. The first one broke my heart, but the second one mended it, made me feel like I could put myself out there again, made me think that I could give myself to someone else again… And then she destroyed me too. She was even crueler than the first.”

Both the husband and wife in this relationship make ridiculous choices when the foundation to their marriage has already been knocked a few times with a ten-tonne wrecking ball. A tenuous connection to each other is effectively destroyed by the end and only showed the fragility of their marriage in the first place.

“In a perfect world, I’d never have to say goodbye…”

However, this was a book I couldn’t put down, certain parts didn’t flow as well as others hence the 3.5 stars, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I lapped up the angst, the chemistry and the wrong choices and while I was screaming at my kindle at times, I knew it would be worth it in the end. I loved the setting of Copenhagen for some of this book and after reading this, is a place I would love to visit.

“A real man with a heart of gold.”

“Maybe it’s because I don’t want to give up on you.”
“Everyone else does.”

Damn, Monica Murphy, what a tangled web we are weaving. For a second book this was fast-paced, action-packed and full of drama, of the best kind. We always thought that Jensen was the only one with secrets, yet it seems that Rhett’s family are just as bad and the more this progressed, the more secrets are exposed. Monica Murphy ends this book on a doozy, leaving the reader salivating for more.

“You think the world is normal? You’re wrong. It’s not. We’re all out there fucking around, doing forbidden things, excited that we might get caught. Even more excited when we don’t. The thrill of doing something you’re not supposed to is intoxicating stuff…”

With book two of a trilogy, you find the author eithers nails it or fails miserably, and I am pleased to say that Monica Murphy definitely hit the former. This book is packed with back story, giving me the character connection that I craved in the first book. I loved that this book was told from Rhett’s point of view and this really gives the reader that extra narrative and answers a lot of questions. Was Jensen a game to him? Are his feelings genuine? I was worried that perhaps this was just a bit of fun for Rhett, but alas, no, Rhett is in this for the long haul.

“I don’t go for skanks who work at strip clubs,” I sneer. The moment the words leave me, I feel like shit. Because I actually do go for skanks who work at strip clubs. I just didn’t realize it until tonight.”

Rhett’s family is one of the most dysfunctional, and it only gets worse in this book. With an older brother and younger sister, Rhett is the doomed middle child, but out of all of them, seems the most put together. Yes, he is jaded, but he doesn’t let it define him. He knows he has been lucky when it comes to financial support, but the support he has been lacking the most is emotional and that is why he and Jensen are just so good together.

“One minute all I want is to feel your skin pressed against mine and the next I want to punch you in your perfect face.”

I hate to think what Monica Murphy has in store for us with Damaged Hearts, but with this soap opera style trilogy I am seriously worried. It seems nothing is off-limits. I am worried for the longevity of Rhett and Jensen, they are chalk and cheese and when Jensen’s secret finally comes out are we talking atomic bomb kinda consequences? However, I am hoping that these two can find a way to stay together, because they really do bring out the best in one and other and each deserve a slice of happiness for once in their, so far, miserable lives.

I do feel that these books could have been released as one lengthy one, I am unsure of the page count but I read this in a little over an hour, like the first. When you have a story this fast paced, I personally feel it would create more of an impact, if you read it hit after hit after hit. Anyhow, bring on book 3.

Every person has a story to tell. Some may be sweet with a happily ever after, but there are others that end in tragedy. Mine has yet to be finished. My name is Elizabeth Kingston and this is where my story begins. I never thought my life could be so perfect. I have an amazing job owning my own bakery, and a wonderful husband who I love and who loves me back. Never once did I have to worry about anything, at least, not until the texts started coming in. They always begin the same way … numbers that spell my nickname when read upside down. 31773 It’s someone from my past, only they won’t to tell me who they are, but that by talking to them, I’ll figure it out. It’s a game I refuse to play. Unfortunately, I’m left with no choice when things begin to take a dangerous turn. His name is Anonymous and there’s only one thing he wants … ME.

Excerpt:

It’s closing time and Vikki and I are busy cleaning, so we can get home. My phone beeps with an incoming text and I look down at it and growl. “You can’t be serious.” Staring back at me isn’t a text from Jake, but from Anonymous. Even though I deleted and blocked the number ninety days ago, I still recognize it. Vikki moves closer, her eyes wide. “What’s going on?” I show her the text. Anonymous: 31773? Brows furrowed, she sits back. “What does that mean?” I turn my phone upside down, so she can see that the number spells out my name. Her eyes widen. “Wow, that’s cool you can type your name with numbers.” “But not so cool when I don’t know who the person is,” I counter. “About three months ago, I got texts from this exact same person. Whoever it is likes to play games. I’m sick of it and I want them to leave me alone.” Taking a deep breath, I type out a reply. Me: WHO IS THIS? Anonymous: Why all the yelling? I roll my eyes. This is just ridiculous. Me: I like using all caps. Anonymous: Don’t stop on my account. So, what have you been up to? Been a while since we talked. Me: Yeah, it’s because I blocked the number. Anonymous: Why? Me: BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!! “What is he saying?” Vikki asks. I show her the texts and her eyes widen. “So, you haven’t talked to him since you blocked the number?” I think back to when I blocked it and if my calculations are correct, the ninety days was up yesterday. “No, but he has perfect timing. My ninety days ran up yesterday. I might need to run to the cell store and see if they can block it permanently.” My phone beeps again and a sharp pain settles in my gut. I just want whoever it is to leave me alone. Anonymous: That hurts. You’ve always been friendly toward me. Me: Obviously not friendly enough, if you can’t tell me who you are. It’s weird and it makes me uncomfortable. You need to leave me the hell alone. Don’t text, call, or try to contact me in any way. I’m happily married, and I want it to stay that way. GOODBYE! Heart racing, I log into my cell phone account and before I can block the number, another text comes through. Anonymous: Sorry 31773 but that’s not going to happen. The blood in my veins runs cold. Hands shaking, I block his number and my phone drops onto the table. Vikki picks it up and reads the final text, her face growing pale. “I don’t think this person’s going away."

“Every person has a story to tell. Some may be sweet with a happily ever after, but there are others that end in tragedy. Mine has yet to be finished.”

This was a book that drew me in by its cover, dark and mysterious, and that pretty much sums up its contents. Mystery, suspense and intrigue. This book centres around an already married couple, so don’t go into this expecting romance, although our hero and heroine are still very much in love and extremely “active.” For me, this was all about the suspense and while I had guessed early on who the “baddie” was it still made for entertaining reading.

This was an extremely quick read, especially for a mystery, thriller type book. I did feel that this would have benefited from a little more meat in places, but none the less, what was delivered got the job done, however, it did feel a bit choppy at times. This is fast paced, action packed and doesn’t give you a chance to breathe. Stalker books are always a good read and this one was great as the reader tries to determine what are clues and what are red herrings.

Our heroine, Ellie is happily married to Jake and runs her own bakery. This couple are still hopelessly in love and this oozes from every page. Jake was an adorable, loving and protective husband, ex MMA and now an architect and Ellie knew she had hit the jackpot of the husband lottery with him. Ellie starts to get anonymous text messages and the more they continue, the creepier and more worrisome they become. Initially keeping them to herself, it soon becomes clear that she needs help and Jake knows just the person.

“Changing your number won’t get rid of me. I’ll still be able to find you.”

As I said above, I had guessed the culprit early on, but the author did have me questioning myself a few times and she does a great job dropping little curveballs to throw you off the scent. Being a crime documentary and serial buff, I did feel that the author exercised artistic license and felt this did not follow procedures or protocols, but none the less, it did make for some entertaining reading. I read this in a few hours, a great way to get lost for a while.

“I’ll deserve an Academy Award for my performance by the time I’m through.”

Her Defiant Heart is the first book in a trilogy and is a genre step for Monica Murphy as she tackles, once again, New Adult Contemporary Romance. I love this authors YA books and I couldn’t wait to dive into something a little hotter and Monica Murphy didn’t disappoint.

Jennifer Fanelli uproots her life with one thing in mind…revenge, but is revenge a dish best served cold? Deserted by her mother as an infant and with her father passed, Jennifer is all alone in the world, but the woman that deserted her is living the high-life with a whole new step-family. To wreak the revenge she wants, Jennifer decides her best course of action is to get close to one of her mother’s step-sons, but she didn’t bet on Rhett Montgomery. Nothing she expected or ever knew she wanted.

Rhett Montgomery, not the frat boy that everyone expects. He has the perfect façade for his friends, but when he meets Jennifer a totally new side is exposed, and Jennifer is not immune to his charms. Rhett is still deeply affected by the death of his mother and it is something that he has never got over, despite his step-mothers attempts to charm him and raise him. Rhett was totally smitten with Jennifer, extremely protective and these two just got along. But, Jennifer is not from the affluent lifestyle and the choices she makes just to survive, may come back to bite her, in more ways than one.

This was a great start and really sets the tone for what is to come. This book read really quick, I’m not sure what the page count is, but I just felt I needed more at the end, to really understand these characters and achieve that character connection that I crave. I wanted a little more depth to them. This may come as the trilogy progresses and I can’t wait to read the next one to see what happens between these two.

Excerpt:

“Your friends are calling you,” I finally say.

He glances over his shoulder, then returns his attention to me. “They can wait.”

I’m surprised he’s putting talking to me above wanting to spend time with his friends. “Well, my homework can’t.” I gesture to the open textbook by my laptop. “Nice to see you again.”

“Nice to see you again? That’s all I get?” He slides into the booth seat across from mine, leaning across the table like he wants to get closer to me. “I bet you don’t even remember my name.”

“I bet you don’t remember mine either,” I toss back at him, tacking on an annoying giggle after I say it.

He makes a face, like he knows I’m fake as hell. “Jensen.”

“Rhett.”

His smile is back, wider than ever. “You should come sit with us.”

“No, thank you.” My voice is prim, like a snotty rich girl’s would be. Wouldn’t they find it hilarious to know that I spent my teenage years living in a mobile-home-slash-trailer park, in the decrepit old fifth-wheel my dad called our new home right before I started eighth grade.

One brow lifts. “My friends would love to meet you.”

“I doubt that.”

“It’s true.” He glances over his shoulder again, and they call out to him, a couple of choice words ringing in the air. The waitress glares, stomping over to their table to give them a lecture I suppose, and Rhett whirls around so he’s facing me once more, his expression full of amusement. “Or maybe not.”

“Go hang out with your friends,” I tell him gently, wanting to give the impression that I am the perfectly understanding girlfriend. He might not have those types of serious thoughts about me—yet—but my good behavior can enter his subconscious, right?

“Jensen. I want to see you again.” He reaches across the table and touches the top of my right hand, his warm fingers practically burning my skin. I snatch my hand away from his, my fingers trembling as I clutch my hands together in my lap.

One casual touch from him and I feel like I’m going to erupt in flames.

It’s terrifying.

This was my first book by AM Willard and was an enjoyable read for me. The pages flew quickly, the characters were interesting, dialogue was great, low angst, more a push and pull of emotions, should I…shouldn’t I. This is a friends to lover’s romance with a little hint of second chance thrown in for good measure.

I must admit, I didn’t gel with this authors writing style in the beginning and it took a while to settle down and just read. However, the story soon grabbed my attention and as our characters who had been friends since school, start circling the possibility of crossing those invisible lines they had up since they began their friendship, things start to get interesting…and complicated.

“…when he’s here, I’m reminded of all the reasons I can’t find someone to love. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s because you can’t give your heart away to another person when you already did years ago.”

Friends since aged ten and now in their thirties, these two were the most infuriating and frustrating best friends EVER. I mean, both suffering from unrequited love, yet if they just spoke to one and other, this merry dance could have had its crescendo already. However, if they did that, then it would be one heck of a boring story. There is a lot of running away from feelings, fear of rejection, fear of ruining a twenty-year friendship, yet these two just fit together and the only ones that couldn’t see it, was them.

While their interactions were frustrating, it was real and relevant to these characters. Their friendship was beautiful, they knew each other inside out and these two really were each other’s soul mates. When a friendship is this cemented and this treasured then the thought of doing something that could potentially destroy it is not something you take on board lightly. When a lot of tequila brings those fine lines into question though…the possibilities could be endless.

This was a cute second chance romance, fast flowing and was an easy read. Enjoyed this one.

“I don’t like unknowns. Ever. Unknowns mean trouble. And trouble gets you killed.”

Poison Kisses is a three-part series, each book being released a week apart. Reading part one has left me intrigued for the rest and if this instalment is anything to go by, then things are about to get extremely interesting.

If you have read the Dirty Money series, you will have heard of Seth, as he was Shane’s right hand man and ex-CIA, and now Lisa Renee Jones has graced us with his own book. In the Dirty Money series, he was a bit of an enigma, extremely professional, well connected and seemed detached and impassive. It is only after reading this first instalment I truly appreciated just how cold he was, the CIA changes you, but being burnt and betrayed by your partner and your lover will do that to you too.

“I don’t remember ever living in a perfect world for even one day of my life. There are just façades of perfection.”

They say that you are never ex-CIA, even if you are and while Shane is on his honeymoon, Seth is recalled into the fold to follow, assist and maybe kill another ex-agent, who just so happens to be his ex-partner, his ex-lover, the woman that destroyed him for all others, an agent dubbed the Scientist or the Poison Princess…so it is only right they call upon the agent once named the Assassin.

“You might be the Assassin, but I’m the Scientist. And if you think I’m not your match, think again.”

When these two are re-united, both are well aware of the others objectives, neither trusts the other and yet the explosive chemistry that these two once shared is still prevalent in spades. But, they hate each other, but we all know there is a fine line between love and hate.

“Amanda, for now, we’re on our way to save lives. And then we’re going to try to take each other’s. But I’m pretty damn sure we’re going to fuck a time or ten before we get there. Because that’s what you do to your enemies. You fuck them.”

Reading between the lines, I am sure that there is a lot more to the perceived betrayal and the more and more this storyline progresses I am sure that there are skeletons to be uncovered. I am hoping that this becomes a second chance romance rather than the love/hate we currently have going on. Action packed, with secrets, lies and betrayal at the forefront there is a lot going on, fast paced and with some degree of artistic licence this is still an enthralling read and one where I can’t wait to read the next instalment. Seth is a complete rock to those he protects and I for one would love to see him settled and happy.

“I was always the Poison Princess to you, wasn’t I?”

“You were my kind of poison.”

Title: Poison Kisses Part Three

Those you love, know how to hurt you. Those you love, know what to hide, because they know what is unforgivable to you. Now that I know what Seth hid from me, I want the secret to be the lie. I don't want to kill him. I don't want to leave him. I guess that's why they say there is a fine line between love and hate. I love and hate that man with such passion, that it damn near hurts. But now, as we face down our shared enemies, as we are lead right back to an explosive discovery about my family, and to the night Seth and I parted ways, we will both be exposed in every way. And it's time for me to decide if I plan to love Seth Cage for the rest of my life, or kill him, before he kills me.

“I hate you, Seth Cage,” she proclaims in what I know to be an out-of-character emotional outburst that tells me I’ve rattled her.

And earns her my cool reply. “There’s a fine line between love and hate, sweetheart,” I say, but I don’t want her to hate me and it pisses me off. What is it about this woman that makes her my weakness? “I wonder if I missed the taste of poison on your lips, or did I just choose to ignore it?” And I need to know that answer. I close my mouth down on hers, my tongue sliding into her mouth, rough, angry, but she doesn’t respond. She doesn’t even touch me, and I won’t allow her that win. I fold her against me, cupping the back of her head, my tongue licking against hers until she finally fucking moans, and responds.

And damn it, she still tastes just as good as she did, just as right when she’s wrong, but at least I know now. Everything right about this woman will always be wrong, including the moment she bites my lips, drawing blood. “I still hate you,” she hisses.

Wiping my lip, I’m wildly aroused by what just happened, which proves how fucked in the head this woman makes me. And while I’m certain we’d both be more than comfortable with the idea of me pulling her skirt up and fucking her right now, and letting her think she’s manipulating me again, that has to wait until I have her someplace to myself. I release her, snatching up her gun and shoving it under my jacket, inside my holster. “Meet me at the south exit. If you aren’t there, I’ll kill you and then move on to Plan B and kill Franklin. And yes. This is a test. Pass it or you’ll be in my bed, in handcuffs for the rest of your life.”

“You said you’d kill me.”

“After I cuff you to my bed.”

I move to the door and exit into the staff hallway, and then the main school hallway, the scent of her, sweet jasmine, clinging to my skin. Damn it, I used to love that smell.

I’m halfway to the exit when suddenly she’s beside me. “As I know you know from whatever file they gave you on me,” she says without looking at me, “I watched people die because of that man in China seven years ago when he set off poison gas in the subway. I’m not sitting back while he does it again.”

I don’t reply. I just keep walking, but now she’s by my side again, as she was for three solid months, three years ago. Her words and actions are reminding me of what I’d found so damn appealing about this woman: her conviction and her moral compass that were greater than mine, that made her too good for me, and yet, made me want her all the more. Only, it was an act, a façade maintained even now and well. She’s an enemy in an uncomfortable alliance. I don’t believe a word she has said.

We reach the exit and I pause with her directly to my right, my eyes capturing hers. “You’re with me now and no one gets to take you from me. And I’m the only one who gets to kill you.”

“You’re so damn romantic,” she says. “No wonder I missed you.”

“You missed me, sweetheart?”

“That wasn’t literal.”

My lips curve. “And yet you kissed me like you missed me.”
