“You’re making it very difficult to be a gentleman.”
“Who asked you to?”

This is another short story from FL Jacob and if you have read Behind the Computer you will recognise Liam as the man that Sawyer left for her cover model. I have to admit, in Behind the Computer I thought Liam was a bit of an ass, but after reading his story my perception of him really changed and I actually felt sorry for him. It just goes to show that there are two sides to every story. However, this is fate at its finest as Liam definitely hadn’t met “the one.” The one comes in the form of Marissa and while this was a tad insta-lust I have come to expect it in shorts. But what the author lacks in word count is definitely made up in an addicting read that will have you rooting for this couple from the very beginning.

“I’m in trouble.” ~ Liam
“How much do you need and where do I need to send the bail money?” ~ Zach
“…I think I’m on a date.” ~ Liam

While Liam and Marissa work in the same office they had never really noticed one another. Liam had been working his fingers to the bone and his head rarely came up for a breather, but it is a chance encounter outside of work that puts these two on one another’s radar. Their chemistry was palpable, their connection was undeniable, office politics…a whole new ball game.

I have to say that the office part of their relationship was handled extremely well, the bedroom was combustible and the easy flowing banter and friendship that these two manage to develop in such a short space of time will leave you in no doubt that these two belonged together. While Liam had been moping around for months after the demise of his relationship he soon gets that twinkle back in his eye and the change in him as soon as Marissa comes into his life and his bed was astounding. Marissa brought out the real Liam and I loved what I saw.

“The way that Marissa and I moved together was so freeing. It didn’t feel robotic or uncertain; it felt like we’d known each other forever and it was just another day that we couldn’t keep our hands off each other.”

Marissa was a tad shy and introvert in the office, she kept her head down and herself to herself, but Marissa had a wild side, especially between the sheets. Liam had certainly met his match with her, but Liam gave her confidence and made her shine so they really did complement each other beautifully.

I also loved Liam’s relationship with his best friend and colleague, there was one conversation that had me chuckling for an age, reminiscent of a similar conversation me and my husband have had in regards to our own daughter.

“Boys would be so much easier; you only have to worry about one dick with boys but with girls you have to worry about all of them.”

So, if you are looking for a quick read that will steam up your kindle then this is the ideal book for you. Fun, flirty and hot and if you haven’t read Behind the Computer I can highly recommend that one too.

“Show me your scars… and I’ll show you mine.”

The muscle in my forehead grew taut, and even without a mirror, I knew how harsh my expression must’ve been to her. It became evident in every inch of my face, from my pursed lips to my tense jaw, even the space between my eyebrows ached with tension.

“Just because I don’t wear them on my skin doesn’t mean I don’t have them, Nolan. Everyone has scars. Everyone has dealt with some varying degree of pain. We’ve all been hurt one way or another.”

“And what will seeing your scars do for me?”

She shrugged with her fingers holding onto my shirt, unmoving, simply waiting. “Hopefully make you understand you’re not alone. Maybe help connect us in some way. Bring us closer, and allow us to open up to each other in a way we’ve never been able to with anyone else.”

“How could we possibly understand each other’s pain?” My voice rumbled heavily as the words escaped me. The oxygen grew thick around us and made it difficult to hold onto my bearings.

Her gaze fell to her fingers once they began to resume their task— pulling my shirt from the waistband of my pants before unhooking the very last button. Then she ran her palms up my chest. Heat spread over me like the sun peeking through the clouds. It left me lost in her touch. Her hands moved to my shoulders, beneath my work shirt, and then torturously down my arms. She pushed my shirt off my body with an unhurried ease.

My white undershirt remained, covering my chest and hiding the unsavory reminders of war. She stood in front of me, staring at my torso like it was a blank canvas, waiting for it to reveal something to her. Gentle fingers caressed the fabric at my sides, leaving behind trails of deep shivers like paths of singed nerves that sparked and sizzled long after her touch had moved on.

Her scrutiny proved to be too much to handle, and without thought, I roughly grabbed the hem of her T-shirt, yanked it over her head, and left her in nothing but a plain black bra. Wide, cerulean eyes met mine, and a soft, airy gasp resounded around us.

Excerpt:

“Harlow, Harlow,” he murmurs in reverence, as if my previous profession of love has brought him to his knees.
He takes my hand and brings it to his lips. His gentle kisses make me drift to a memory from a couple hours ago when Sin’s lips brushed over my knuckles. I felt everything then. My senses hummed. Now, I feel nothing.
I try to ease my hand from his, but his grip holds me in place. “Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to hear you say these words?” He places another kiss on my hand. “I forgive you for tonight.”
I do need his forgiveness, because his lips aren’t the ones I want on me. The ones I want belong to the man driving the car behind us. The fact that he’s James’ nephew makes me feel even more ashamed. What is wrong with me?
“You say you love me, but I need you to show me your love. Erase what I saw.” He releases my hand and I can guess what he wants: sex. It’s how he communicates.
“Unzip your dress and remove your bra,” he instructs, his voice rough.
I don’t want to upset him more, so I work myself out of my dress and bra. The air conditioning blows across my bare breasts and my nipples harden. I’m tempted to cover them with my hands, but he wouldn’t approve, so they stay at my sides.
Eyeing my exposed body, he licks his lips, pleased with what he sees. He reaches over to touch the side of my breast, cupping it with his hand. His thumb finds my nipple and strokes over it, pinching it hard. I inhale a sharp breath at the assaulting sensation.
“You’re utter perfection. Feel how hard you make me.” His fingers leave my breast and grip my hand. Placing my hand over his bulging erection and curling my fingers around him, I close my eyes.
“Now, unzip my pants and put me in your hot mouth.”

“Love. It’s a captor, and I’m its prisoner.”

The title and extremely vague blurb were what drew me to this book in the first instance and I also love finding new to me authors. I think when so much is left to your imagination and certainly your own interpretation sometimes what you think you are going to get is not what is delivered and that was the case with this book. For me, I was expecting something dark, suspenseful and twisty and while there are certainly some elements of that throughout the book, for me personally, this was more a romance interspersed with a little suspense.

I loved the authors writing style and quickly became engaged in both the story and the characters, Liv Morris certainly has a talent with words and she managed to totally captivate me with Harlow’s story.

Harlow, although on the outside appeared weak at first glance was an inherently strong woman. She had not had the best start in life and had to work for anything and everything she has ever owned. It has always been Harlow and her mum, right from conception, so she had to grow up fast and while her mum had done everything she possibly could they still lived on the bread line, but they always had each other.

“I am nothing. I am no one. But there’s someone new who believes the opposite.”

Liv Morris really kicks you in the gut in the opening scene and Harlow’s life as she knows it has come to an end, it is now time for Harlow to really stand on her own two feet but sometimes life is just too much and Harlow really needs to find her inner strength.

I really cannot say much more about the story itself as everything that happens is a spoiler. Yes, there are two men in Harlow’s life, but there is no cheating and this is definitely part of the tangled web that Liv Morris weaves throughout this story.

James was a top neurosurgeon and had met Harlow when her life was turned upside down. He was a lot older than Harlow but he inherently loved her, whether that love was healthy and reciprocated remains to be seen. James was controlling and ultra-possessive or should I say obsessive. While I actually believed he loved her, as I said above, it wasn’t healthy and the life that Harlow was living…just simply wasn’t one.

“…a frightened girl searching for direction – lost somewhere between my mother’s apartment and James’ sanctuary.”

Sinclair is James’s nephew and he comes to visit for a while to do a month’s residency at the hospital that James works at. Sinclair is more Harlow’s age but sometimes fresh eyes are just what someone needs to see what is right and what is wrong. Sin immediately fears for the life that Harlow is living and it is with his support that Harlow finally realises that this is far from normal and he gives her the strength and backbone that she needs.

So, who would you marry, who would you screw and who would you kill? For me, all three were filled with characters’ names and actually did so quite quickly in this story. Liv Morris certainly doesn’t dangle the good guy vs bad guy carrot. However, where I thought this story would go is not what happened and for me, I have to admit I felt a little deflated towards the end. This is where I go back to my introduction to this review, it was the vagueness that had me plotting and scheming before I had even read a word and with some epic finale in my head I didn’t get what I expected. However, the ending that was, still wrapped up everything nicely with no stone unturned for the main characters.

“I loved her into unconsciousness.”

Marry Screw Kill is a story of grief, obsession, love and finding yourself. It was an addictive read, one that I didn’t want to put down and I will certainly be checking out other books from this author.
