Review ~ Crashed (The Driven Trilogy #3) by K Bromberg

Reviewed by Donna ~ 4.99 stars!! (Yes I know, but Fueled just topped it for me!)

“I’m all alone. All alone except for the comfort of those I’ve waited a lifetime to arrive. My decision’s been made. The superheroes finally came.”

Anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE Kristy Bromberg fan, from the minute I picked up Driven those many moons ago, Rylee and Colton had me totally and utterly captivated and Fueled just drove them home to a permanent place in my heart and head. That is the beauty of Kristy Bromberg’s writing, she manages to instil her characters indelibly and unreservedly into your heart, her fluid words eat at you slowly and you live and breathe their story, they become your friends and family.

So, picking up Crashed was bittersweet, while I was excited to start the final instalment in their amazing journey, it also meant that this was the end. This was the end that I never wanted to see and still don’t. I think I am going to have to petition Kristy to #writekristywrite, while I am excited to read Beck’s story, personally I feel there is more to Colton and Rylee and I for one want to read more. Am I being greedy? Probably! Do I care? Nope, I want some more and no doubt so will a lot of other readers.

We all remember the killer ending of Fueled, I don’t think I have even recovered, even now, well Kristy is well renowned for her beginnings and her endings and this book is no different. The prologue will have you totally and utterly captivated from the start, in fact I don’t think I moved until I had finished the book, the world stood still, thank god I started it at night so the only thing that suffered was my sleep, because nothing was going to come between me and those words I never wanted to read “The End.”

Unsurprisingly, this book was extremely emotional, this is what Kristy does best, emotive writing. You feel the pain, you feel the love, you feel the sadness, you feel the happiness, you feel, feel every freaking word. It is this style that keeps your eyes glued to every page in every chapter. As much as I wanted to get to the end, I couldn’t do a quick read of this one, I savoured it, I devoured it and as a first for me, I read it slowly, extremely slowly. These characters deserved my undivided attention and they got it.

“Remember, life isn’t about how you survive the storm, but rather how you dance in the rain.”

I will start with Rylee, she really developed in this book, she became stronger, she evolved, yes she still had her moments of weakness and self-doubt, but she really found her back bone. She had to fight in this book and she did it brilliantly. You felt her pain, you felt her heart break, she goes through the mill, but you go through it with her. There were many tears spilled reading this book and none more so at times for Rylee. But this woman has spunk, she never gives up and this I love about her. She always knows what Colton needs, she knows when to push, she knows when to hold back but most of all, you feel the love she feels for him radiate off the page. It is this love that is all encompassing, that pulls you in to this beautiful story and is like crack, you cannot stop reading.

“You could never be inconsequential.”
Colton, my my my, those words haunted me again in this book…

“Spiderman. Batman. Superman. Ironman.”

Never have four words that mean so little, mean so much…it was these four little words that killed me in Fueled and for a while they decimated me in Crashed. He is in my No1 BBF spot, he is tied, as I am greedy, but this broken man wheedled his way into my heart from the beginning, there was something about him, something that drew me to him, maybe it was his back story, maybe even his inner demons that I wanted to quell, but that mix of swagger together with his lack of self-belief and his stunted emotions, I couldn’t help but “race” him even more in this book.

“Remember, hurting is feeling and feeling is living, and isn’t it good to be alive?”

He really does go through it in this book, not only does he have to recover physically, but he needs to come terms with his own emotional wellbeing. He does a lot of soul searching in this book; he needs to fix the broken before he can move on completely. He knows that Rylee deserves 100% and he wanted to give it to her. He wanted to give himself completely and unequivocally and it was this that led to more tears for me. To live and breathe this with him was heart breaking but on the other hand heart-warming. You witness the slow metamorphosis, you see the eureka moment and you are patiently waiting excitedly for the moment that Colton realises he has succeeded, the one where he finally realises that he can love and he can finally live.

“Relationships aren’t easy. They’re hard and can be brutal at times… but those are the times you learn the most about yourself. And when they’re right…” “they can be like coming home…finding the rest of your soul…”

Kristy, I am speechless, it has taken a long time for me to write this and a couple of re-reads in between. I wanted to do this book and series justice, but trying to get the words onto paper was sooo difficult. I now appreciate #writersblock. All I can say is that this is one of my favourite series, one that I still struggle to believe was written by a new author. Someone that has bled their heart and soul onto the pages, you feel the love for these characters, you see the growth in her writing and you can’t help but sit back in amazement and revel in what you have just read. This series is one of my go to books, it never fails to pull me out of a funk and I cannot wait to see what Kristy has in store for us next. Whatever it is, you can be guaranteed of my 1click.

“A to motherfucking Z.”

Unbelievably brilliant, totally loved it, and the epilogue gahhhhh the epilogue, freaking loved it.

“Nothing but sheets.”

Review ~ Archers Voice (A sign of love #4) by Mia Sheridan

Reviewed by Donna ~ 5 Amazing Stars

“Sometimes an understanding silence was better than a bunch of meaningless words.”

This is without a doubt one of the best books I have read, and is now one of my all-time favourites. It is unique, original, emotional and angsty but perfectly balanced and is certainly one story that will stay with me for a very long time. Mia Sheridan is a super talented author, she has that knack of drawing you in to her characters so that they are all encompassing, you feel them, you live them and you breathe them, and once you finish the book, they are all you can think about and Archer has stayed with me for a very long time.

Archer…what can I say about Archer…I can’t even put into words what I felt for this guy. Such an amazing, inspirational character, he had his alpha tendencies, but he was emotional, compassionate, he had his vulnerabilities but his actions spoke louder than words. He had lived a shit life, there was no denying, a town where prejudices were prevalent and he was the butt of the rumours, the gossip, the social pariah, he kept himself to himself as that was all he knew, he was just misunderstood, that was until he met Bree.

“They don’t know who you are, Archer. They have no idea. And they don’t deserve to know. Don’t let their judgment hurt you.”

Bree was starting a new life in Pelion, running from her past, wanting to start over where she could overcome her own inner demons. When she ran into Archer she felt a connection, she wanted to know more, he was intriguing and looked like he needed a friend. She couldn’t help but feel for Archer, something was telling her to persevere, deep down she knew that he needed her and also maybe she needed him.

Their slow building friendship was beautiful to watch, Bree has the patience of a saint as she tries to convey to Archer that there is more to life than what he was living. Slowly but surely she manages to bring Archer out of his shell and opens his eyes to new experiences , even the smallest mundane tasks meant so much to both of them. They both begin to cherish the time that they spend together and look forward to it as part of their daily routine.

“How do you teach a man who has lost everything, not to fear it happening again?”

Bree takes Archer on a voyage of self-discovery eventually leading to the faint flicker of love between them, what starts as a little ember soon morphs into a raging fire and once these two eventually concede to their feelings the result is magical and beautiful to read.

“I want to be able to love you more than I fear losing you, and I don’t know how. Teach me, Bree. Please teach me. Don’t let me destroy this.”

I would love to go into details about their story, but I can’t, it would spoil it for all you readers. This is one story that you need to read for yourself, cherish it, savour it, devour it, but most of all learn from it. Not only is this an amazing love story, but it is also an amazing life story. Something we could all learn something from.

As I said above the character connection in this book is phenomenal, you cannot help but be drawn into their beautiful story of friends to lovers. Even the coldest of hearts would be warmed reading this. But most of all this is a book about changing public perceptions don’t judge a book by its cover; take time to understand the person beneath the façade. Things are not always what we perceive them to be, but perhaps they just need that little chance to show their true colours and flourish. People are all too quick in life to be judgemental, but sometimes, all you need is that little bit of strength and understanding to make the first move, after all, it may be life changing for someone, including yourself.

Seriously though, I cannot convey how much this book affected me, my heart, my head were all a mess, and I had tears of sadness and happiness, but most of all I knew that I had been on one hell of an emotional journey. This is one of those books that you know you had read, you won’t forget it and Archer will most definitely leave his imprint on your heart, this is one character that you cannot fail to fall in love with. Archer Hale is now up there on my BBF list and I haven’t had a new entry for quite some time!

“And I thought to myself, Archer Hale’s voice was one of the most beautiful things in the whole wide world.”

Mia Sheridan, you continue to amaze me and I seriously cannot wait for more in this series, once again an amazing read, truly and utterly fabulous!

Destroyed by Pepper Winters

Reviewed by Donna ~ 3.5 Stars

“I thought she was a saint. She thought I was a sinner. Too bad we didn’t try to find the truth. We both paid the price.”

This is a hard one for me to review, I have read quite a few Pepper Winters books and have absolutely loved them. However, this one I liked, but it didn’t pull me in like the others. For me this one lacked character connection, I didn’t feel this one and I love to feel.

The story though is not what I would call dark, it is more a dark grey, but it is unique and intriguing. I do love a “broken man” and Obsidian Fox is definitely that. Obsidian Fox is the owner of an underground fight club, he was a man to be scared of, he was intense, scarred, extremely strong and highly trained. His past was that of an assassin, the training from a young child had left it’s marks both emotionally and physically, to the point that he could not be touched, only in one to one combat. If you did touch him, not many people lived to tell the tale. He was ruthless, lethal, extremely tortured, but deep down we got the inkling that all he ever wanted was to be loved, but he thought that was never a possibility due to his past. After all, how could you love, when you couldn’t even bare to be touched.

“I was obsessed with finding redemption. Destroyed by love. Possessed by hope. Consumed by a past I couldn’t shake.”

Hazel was another with a troubled past and still had personal problems that were eating her alive. All consuming and not seeing an end in sight she was left desperate, she needed money and fast, after all her daughters life depended on it. Hazel is taken to Fox’s club by her friend, she didn’t expect to meet anyone, neither did Obsidian Fox.

“Life ended.

Then began again.

Noise ceased.

Then came again.

Heat froze.

Then enveloped again.

Sorrow disappeared.

Then settled again”

The instance their eyes met they felt the pull, totally alien to Obsidian Fox as he has never felt anything like this in his life, it was frightening, he was highly trained, trained not to feel, feelings put you in danger, but he was intrigued, who was this woman and why the hell did she make him “feel.” All that he knew was that his life would never be the same again and this led him to make Hazel an offer she couldn’t refuse. How would this work, after all he couldn’t be touched, unless Hazel could do the impossible?

Hazel was incredibly strong and resilient, having been on her own for so long she relied on no-one and was not going to start now. However, Obsidian had made her that offer that could save her daughter and she was willing to put her own life at risk to do it. Even though her common sense is telling her to run, she also can’t help the pull that she feels towards Obsidian Fox, there is that connection, but could she be the one to make Obsidian feel? Could she warm that frozen heart, or would it take a child’s love to do that? After all, there must be a cure, right?

I loved the way that both their pasts were slowly revealed throughout the book, it helps you understand Obsidian so much better, but by being drip fed, you are also left wondering why until you get that eureka moment. The way that Obsidian punished himself was painful to read but yet I felt like I understood to some degree. Their relationship does give you whip lash, however having it any other way would not have read right. It was like walking on egg shells, but it needed to be that way and sometimes we do have to go back, to enable us to move forward.

“We destroyed each other.”

In summary this was a great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I just wish I could have connected to them that bit more, it wasn’t far off, but I just wanted that emotional connection. There were times I should have cried but I didn’t and being a blubberer I noticed.
