Review ~ The Gamble (Colorado Mountain 1) by Kristen Ashley @KristenAshley68

Reviewed by Willow ~ 4 Stars

I've heard a lot of people talk about Kristen Ashley books and they have been on my TBR pile for sometime, but I've just never gotten around to them. Recently several of my book friends said I had to read them. So I dove into The Gamble.

From the first chapter I knew I was going to like this book, the writing seemed to flow well and it seemed so easy to read. Although it is a longer book than my usual reads It didn't seam that way and I lost all sense of time as I got sucked in.

The book is told from the POV of Nina. Nina is on holiday in the Colorado mountains from England. Well actually she is taking a time out from her fiancĂ©, Niles to think about her life and their relationship. She has rented a mountain house to stay in for two weeks whilst she gets her head together. Driving up the mountain in a snow storm, and not feeling 100% well she can't wait to get there and just crawl into bed.

Unfortunately when she gets there there's been a mistake and the house is occupied, apparently by the owner who is very rude and tells her there is a hotel down the mountain. They have heated words and Nina ends up driving down the mountain, unfortunately her car slides off the road and she gets stuck. Climbing in the back seat she tries to go to sleep until someone can rescue her in the morning.

Lucky for her, Max, the owner finds her shortly after, she is now very ill and has a fever so Max takes her back to his house. She's out for two days and Max nurses her back to health. Once she is awake, she decides that she cant stay with Max and tries to leave. Max isn't having any of it and says she has to stay whilst she is recovering. There is great banter between these two, they did not get off to a good start, but Max seems like he is actually warming to her and the fact that he cared for her and is showing concern now is confusing Nina.

Nina came away for one reason - to get distance from Niles and think about her future with him. But with Max caring for her when she was sick, and Niles not seeming to care that she hasn't yet called him to let him know she arrived safe, she quickly realises that her decision maybe easy as Niles doesn't really care for her. Max doesn't waste time telling her that either:

“I was your man, you were halfway around the world from me, honey, I’d fucking phone you … If you told me you needed a timeout, first, I wouldn’t fuckin’ let you have one. Second, I wouldn’t give you reason to fuckin’ want one. And last, you took off anyway, I’d fuckin’ phone.”

Nina has had a bad past with men, and Niles was the safe option, but she is quickly realising that the safe option isn't always the best. Max is getting under her skin, she is trying her best not to think of him and stay away but she is finding it difficult and Max is extremely sexy:

“His back was to me and he was wearing pajama bottoms and nothing else. His shoulders, the smooth muscles of his back, the wide expanse of smooth, tan skin, was all exposed to the naked eye and I was blinded by the beauty of it. So much, it was a wonder I didn't throw out my hand reeling.

At that thought, he turned and gave me a view of his chest.

At this view, arguably better than his back, I sucked in a breath then whispered to myself, "Oh my God.”

Max is a super hot alpha male.  He doesn't take no for an answer. He knows what he wants. and right now that's Nina, He just has to convince her:

“His hand slid up my spine, bringing me closer, pinning my hands between us as I watched his neck bend.
I had a feeling I knew where this was going.
"Max," I warned, my body bracing.
"Quiet," he ordered softly. "Got a point to make, honey."
"Max!" I snapped.
"Let's see how good this could be," he muttered, his eyes on my mouth and I knew, I just knew, he was going to kiss me.
"Max, don't you-"
But his fingers had sifted into my hair against my scalp cupping my head, holding me steady and his mouth came down on mine, cutting off my words.”

I have to say I really loved the banter that when on between these two. With Max being all Alpha male but Nina thinking that she was an independent woman, there were sparks flying!

“Jesus," he muttered, dropping his head.
"What?"
He looked back at me. "Duchess, you can argue about anything."
"No I can't."
"So, now you're arguin' about not arguing?"
I decided to be quiet.”

But its not all about Max and Nina. There is lots going on in this book, there has been a murder in town and you quickly learn that there are lots of people who might have wanted this man dead, including Max, luckily he has an alibi but you are left wondering why Max would want this guy dead. This gets slowly leaked out to you as the story continues. You also meet other people from the small town, some of whom also have reason to commit the murder, others who have their own problems, including dealing with a rape and a violent ex. Add to the mix Niles showing up to try and get Nina back and you certainly have enough in this book to keep you on your toes.

I really didnt want to put this book down and I found myself counting down the clock until I finished work so I could get back to reading it. I loved Kristen's writing style, it was so easy to forget about the outside world and feel like I was actually living in the town too watching these events unfold.

I did have a problem with this book though - something that annoyed the hell out of me and did take some of the enjoyment away, so I've had to take a star off, if it weren't for this it would have been a resounding 5 stars. The problem I had - Nina saying "i'm sorry?" what felt like a 1000 times - every time she didn't understand something, or didn't want to accept some thing Max was telling her to do Or if it wasn't that, repeating things people were saying. However, this wasn't an issue for a lot of readers and even with this I still loved the book, so I highly recommend it.

I'm really looking forward to reading more Kristen Ashley books, they have definitely bumped up my TBR list, in fact Ive just started Sweet Dreams, book 2 in the series and I'm already loving it!

Review ~ Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken @RachVD

“Don’t give up yet. Sometimes when we think God has written The End, what he really means is The Beginning.”

This is one hell of a beautiful YA read, this book starts as it means to go on…EMOTIONAL!!

Kiersten had lost both her parents and was being brought up by her Uncle Jobob. For years she had been grieving and he was frightened for her, she needed to learn to live again rather than stare blankly at the walls, so he encouraged her to go to college. Kiersten felt out of her comfort zone as soon as she got there, but she had an amazing roommate - Lisa who soon introduced her to her cousin Gabe. The dynamics that these three had were brilliant and at times hilarious! I absolutely adored Gabe, that guy deserves his own book!

“I’d lost the love of my life – my best friend. How many times could people experience loss before they died too?”

Kiersten goes to registration to get all her timetables and ID cards and stuff sorted and she crashes into a big hard wall of…muscle…feeling embarrassed her eyes raise slowly off the floor and she is met with an 8 pack! Now really embarrassed as she has been caught ogling (something she has never done before, she is highly reserved, quiet and of course virginal) she runs off to find her RA advisor. Said wall of muscle is her RA advisor and his name is Wes. He is also the son of the richest guy in America, has an entourage, is an alleged player and is constantly guarded by body guards. He is an enigma to most as he tends to keep himself to himself, there are rumours flying around about him and it is up to Kiersten to pick out the truths.

These two are beautiful together, they instantly become friends, although I think both would have liked more, however Wes is reserved going totally against the rumours and this just intrigues Kiersten more. Is Wes hiding something? Or is Wes just not what everyone perceives? Kiersten, being the little gem that she is gives him the benefit of the doubt, she takes as she finds and so far Wes have given her nothing to be afraid of. In fact BFF are born but will it stay that way?

The way the author pulls you into this book is mesmerising, it is beautifully written, captivating, emotional, extremely funny but most of all you connect, not only to Wes and Kiersten but to Lisa and Gabe too. It is not often that all the main characters in a book become your friends and you can totally see yourself hanging out with them. I felt their emotions, I laughed when they laughed and I cried when they cried. That is hard to do!

Wes was a brilliant male lead, he knew that Kiersten had the same darkness that he did, he had been through similar trauma himself and wanted to help his “lost little lamb” but him being the “wolf” was totally off the mark, he was a lost little lamb himself and it took the constant of Kiersten to bring him back.

“I can tell you have a good heart…” I sighed, opening the door to the outside. “…because the minute I met you, I wanted to fight for it.”

All I can say is that this is a must read, as usual I don’t want to give too much away but this is a story of grief, depression, learning to live, learning to love, support, being strong but most of all never giving up. A tale that life is too precious and you must live for the moment. It does cover a really sensitive subject but the way Rachel Van Dyken took us on this journey it made you believe, it made you live it, feel it and most of all you were praying that all was right with the world at the end. Sometimes these stories never have a happy ever after but with this story you will just have to read and see.

“What you two have – it’s a once in a lifetime – you fight for him sweetheart. Fight for him with every last breath. No regrets, okay?”

“Okay”

I will admit, I was a tad confused with the prologue and ending, I have messaged the author and have had it explained but this is the only reason for my 4.5 else I would have given it a resounding 5 stars. Brilliant book Rachel!

Introducing Friday Frights ~ Paranormal Romance Reviews!

We'd like to introduce you to our new guest reviewer, Shirley. Shirley is going to focus on reviewing Paranormal Romance Books. They will feature on the blog on Friday's which will be known as "Friday Frights"!

Here is a little bit about Shirley:

Hi there, my name is Shirley, I am retired, I am also Donna’s mum…yes my daughter has asked me to become a guest reviewer and Willow has welcomed me with open arms!! Bless them!! I have been reading ever since I could pick up a book. I have literally read thousands and thousands of books. Reading has always been my favourite pastime from Romance (Mills and Boon) to modern Romances, Crime, Thrillers and most recently Paranormal. Donna got her love of books from me as she was always encouraged to read and I always had my head stuffed in a book! Our house was covered in them as is my house now! Although Donna has now got me a kindle so my shelves are somewhat reprieved at the moment!

Donna and Willow were eager to introduce a paranormal romance side to the blog and as I was reading this genre anyway I said that I would do whatever I could to help. You will have to bear with me, I am new to all this and extremely nervous but I will always give you my honest opinion.

I can’t wait to get started on Friday Frights!!

And here is Shirley's first review:

Kades Dark Embrace (Immortals of New Orleans 1) by Kym Grosso

Reviewed by Shirley ~ 4.5 Stars

Have I got a delicious treat for you. This book is full of wild but oh so sensual sex and a terrific story line to boot, with humans, vampires, werewolves and voodoo mages.

It starts out with a murder in Philadelphia where our lively blonde detective Sydney works for the PPD and is called in to investigate said murder. Unbeknown to her, her werewolf friend Tristan has heard rumours and thinks this will not be the only murder. He has asked a dark deliciously sexy vampire friend “Kade” from New Orleans to help the PPD as Tristan believes the supernatural are involved.

From the start Sydney and Kade are butting heads as Sydney thinks that she is quite capable of solving this murder with her usual PPD partner, not with an outsider and a vampire to boot. Kade is equally determined to be there as just by examining the body he knows that the supernatural are involved and it would be dangerous for Sydney to do this on her own, so an uneasy partnership is established.

Whilst these two people are investigating a mutual sexual attraction is hotting up between them, WOW!! Things come to a head and with their first kiss, Sydney whispers against Kades lips…

“I want you Kade, please don’t stop.”

A mind-blowing experience for both of them and neither one of them can forget it and are left wanting for more, lo and behold, boy do they get it together, eventually! Hot Hot Hot! Starting from an erotic threesome dance with Kades friend Luca, Kade comes up behind Sydney and says in her ear…

“You seem to like playing with two men, enjoying our dance with Luca aren’t you love, but remember Sydney, I DON’T SHARE and at the end of the night you’re MINE.”

This man has made his claim!!

With them getting into dangerous situations and the oh so hot hot sex you will thoroughly love this book. It caught me from the get go and I had to finish it in one sitting as I could not put it down.

Kym, I wanted to be Sydney, I was so jealous, where are these men like Kade? I want to meet one!!

All jokes aside, I loved this book and I see that there are three more after this one. I cannot wait to get stuck into them, I can see me burning the midnight oil!!
