Review ~ Clear: A Death Trippers Novel by Jessica Park

Reviewed by Donna ~ 4.5 Stars

“I love you so mush.”

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Jessica Park, she is insanely talented and I love her writing style. But what Jessica has given us in the past is humour and contemporary always with that underlying romance. Clear is way out of her normal, so I was apprehensive yet excited because deep down I knew that no matter what Jessica wrote, it would be fantastic and I was not wrong.

This is one of those WTF have I just read books. It has actually taken me a few days to digest and actually think about what I am going to say in this review. It is unlike anything I have read before and certainly leaves you thinking at the end, it is one of those books that you just cannot stop thinking about. You need to go into this book without any preconceived ideas, just read the book, take it in and make up your own mind.

I will say that “death tripping,” as the name infers is about dying and as such this book did get a little “bloody” in places so please be prepared, but it was not gratuitous or overkill (pardon the pun) but was used to complete the paranormal aspect of this book.

Stella Ford’s life is awful, feeling unloved and unwanted by her family, which was entirely warranted, she just survives day to day. On her sixteenth birthday her father and sister are involved in a car accident and are taken to hospital. Her mother ignores her, only having concern for her husband and daughter and blames Stella in every way possible for the day’s events. Just another disappointment then. Stella slopes off to get away from the feeling of loathing that rolls off her mother and while sitting at the top of a stair well she meets Sam Bishop.

“Everything will be okay. Good things last, and the bad things will fade away. So, go find your good.”

Sam Bishop comes to Stella’s aid and they have a good heart to heart but there is something about their meeting that screams fate, they were both in the right place at the right time. However, life goes on and after a discussion about life etcetera they go their separate ways.

Five years later and Stella’s life has not improved at all, in fact it is inherently worse. Not long after the accident her father left the family home and Stella’s mother and sister began to abuse her even more, both mentally and verbally. She lived alone, survived on meagre rations and the families mind games leave her constantly questioning her own sanity. Finally having had enough, she decides to up and leave and she heads to Maine, the place that five years ago Sam Bishop described so beautifully.

Maine was just as Sam described and it is not long before she has tracked down the B & B that Sam’s parents owned. Glad that Sam was still in Maine she could not wait to meet him again and see if he remembers their meeting many years ago. The Sam that Stella meets is not the same, he is broken and destroyed, there is a story to be told, he saved her once and now it was time she reciprocated.

“…As far as hallucinations go, you’re a pretty good one. So, come on in, and let’s see what my fucked-up head does with you next.”

This is where the story starts and from here on in my mouth stays zipped. This is where everything changes and life becomes and evolves around “death tripping.” Sam’s best friend Costa is also involved and the three of them begin a mission. Delving into the deep unknown of “death tripping” with one main goal.

“As suicidal as it sounds, it isn’t really dying, and it isn’t about trying to die. There’s no death wish. Ironically, it’s the opposite. We’re after an enhanced sense of life. We trip over death, but don’t take it…The intoxication is nearly impossible to fight.”

I will say that this book is dark, it is raw and is a complete mind fuck, but it is amazingly fantastic. Sam and Stella have an intense connection and chemistry and this leads to some insanely hot scenes especially when coming down from a “surge.” It seems that Stella, Sam and Costa’s friendship was more than fate and it is now up to this trio to work together.

“There are kisses that arouse, there are kisses that deliver love, and then there are kisses that transcend both of those things. That’s how Sam kisses me – with his entire soul.”

Jessica Park weaves an intense plot that will have you questioning your own sanity at times. I had plenty of WTF moments, jaw dropping moments, jump off your couch moments but that was perfectly balanced with some intense sizzling chemistry that had me glued to the pages. You will run the gamut of emotions, empathy, confusion, anger, sadness, pain, love but most of all you will be intrigued and captivated and you will not want to put this book down. I loved the characters and even Costa, who makes one hell of an entrance, grew on me. He is one character that I would love to know more about and if this is just the beginning of a series I am hoping that the same characters are developed going further.

“We came first.”

It is hard to believe that the same author who gave us perfect, beautiful Celeste can somehow turn her mind to something like this but she has executed it brilliantly. I am not a huge reader of paranormal but I have to say I LOVED this book.  Death has never been so addicting. When is my next trip…?

Review ~ The Girl Before Eve by Lisa J Hobman

Reviewed by Donna ~ 5 Stars

“Always together but…never TOGETHER”

Sometimes you open a book (or flick on your kindle) and just by reading the first few lines you know you are going to love a book and that is exactly how I felt when I started The Girl Before Eve.  I love a best friend to lover’s book, I love a weepy, I love humour and this book had it all, in spades…it is official, I was in book love and author love.

This book is set in the UK and is written by a British author, the setting, the friendship, the banter, the emotion, the plot, it was all perfect.  I have fallen in love with Lisa J Hobman’s voice and I have actually started the first book that she wrote called Bridge Over the Atlantic. There is something addicting about how this author writes and I am so glad that Amazon sent an email recommending this book and I cannot believe that I hadn’t found Lisa J Hobman sooner.

Lily and Adam have been friends since primary school; Adam was her knight in shining armour when he rescued her from a playground bully at the ripe old age of six. That day a friendship was born that would stand the test of time, these two grew together, became best friends, each other’s confidantes, protectors, they were inseparable. Everybody thought that these two would end up together but alas the only two that couldn’t see it were Lily and Adam. They went to secondary school together and University together where their connection just grew and grew but it never crossed the friend zone much to Lily’s dismay.

“This is it. This is goodbye. This is forever.”

Lily had had her eureka moment, finally, during a tennis match in their twenties, she could see that she didn’t love Adam as a best friend, but that in fact she was in love with Adam, however, for fear on destroying their friendship she kept her thoughts and feelings to herself, unrequited love was a bitch!

“Unrequited love is a complete, fucking shit-head of a bastard, isn’t it?”

I cannot express how much I cried reading this book, this book gripped my heart in a vice like grip and never ever let go. My emotions were shot to shreds as I painfully read through how Lily really felt, how heart breaking it was when Adam got girlfriends and how it was smashed to smithereens when he finally found love. Lisa J Hobman manages through beautiful, poignant yet soul destroying words to paint every single crack, every single splinter, every fissure and I couldn’t help the sobs that wracked my body.

“…you already know that I HAVE been in love. But I got my heart broken…no…smashed to smithereens. So excuse me if I’m not willing to give my fragile heart out to the first man who says he loves me.”

As this book flashes from past to present you are treated to how their friendship developed, how close they became, how dependant they were on each other and it was beautiful to read. Lily is a truly beautiful character both inside and out. But she was sassy and gobby at the same time; she didn’t have a filter, told it how it is and this only made me love her all the more.  She was hilarious and the banter between Adam and Lily had me crying with laughter. This is what I loved about this book, one minute I had tears of sadness and in the next tears of laughter. This book was perfectly balanced and was such a fantastic enjoyable read.

“You have what they call the complete package, Adders.”
“What do you know about my package?”
“Not THAT package, you idiot! You ARE the complete package! I wasn't talking about what's in your trousers!”

I loved Adam too, the connection that he had with Lily was truly amazing and he always put their friendship first, he was selfless when it came to Lily. He was the best, best friend you could ever wish for and had a heart of gold. These two were soul mates, they bounced off each other, they knew each other inside out and they had each other’s backs, always.

I am not going to go into the plot at all, you need to experience this one for yourself, you need to feel the emotion for yourself and take yourself on Lily and Adam’s journey. It is a beautiful, emotional and poignant read, you will laugh and you will cry but at the end you will just appreciate the fact that you have read a truly fantastic book. The course of true love never runs smooth and there are a lot of highs and lows but most of all it is a journey that most of us can empathise and sympathise with. Maybe you will be like me and fall in author lust too. I loved the way that each chapter had a song that fitted the scene perfectly and I found myself listening and reading at the same time.  In summary, all I can say is read this book! I totally loved it and don’t forget the tissues.

“…And so you go off to married life
Here I stand and say goodbye
I wish you both happiness, love and joy
And now I’ll stop before I cry”

Friday Frights ~ PNR Review ~ Bitten by A Hellcat (Eternal Mates Book 6) by Felicity Heaton

Review by Shirley ~ 5 Stars

**ARC Received for honest review**

Another marvellous story by author Felicity Heaton, and boy is it one very hot, erotic book as well. It has plenty going on to keep the interest running and you will want to keep reading just to see what happens next with Cait and Owen.

This book is about Owen a hunter for hire and Cait a Hellcat. Cait’s hellcat is one of the rarest cat shifters in the paranormal world. She is one of the devil’s own, dangerous and powerful, but she is also one of the most beautiful women around and sooo sensual.

Owen is one of the most successful hunters alive, coming from the most distinguished family of Nightingales although he is the last of the line. He is very good at what he does. People call him a mercenary but that doesn't worry him as long as he gets the job done.

The story begins when they meet up in the nightclub Underworld and Cait comes up to Owen and asks him if he is interested in a job. She has someone after her and she wants him gone from her life. When Cait comes face to face with Owen not only is she interested in hiring him but also she is overwhelmed in lust at the sight of him sitting there beside her, she wouldn't mind getting very hot and dirty with this very hot handsome man, something she hasn't felt in a very very long time.

The attraction is mutual and the dance of time begins with hot sexual innuendos going back and forth until it got to the stage that they had to act upon it.

“Owen slid his hand down her thighs to her backside and raised it off the bed. Her legs drifted down his arms as he leaned over her, catching on his elbows, and her hot gaze slid down the length of his torso, settling on his cock. It jerked again and she murmured the sexiest little moan he had ever heard.”

but apart from the sizzling lovemaking Owen has a job to do and he was making it his mission to get it done no matter how dangerous it might be, he had Cait to think about now. As for Cait she couldn't get enough of Owen which makes for a very erotic read between these two. Get ready to get very hot and bothered. Phew.

Their feelings run riot, but underneath it all there was something growing between them. Something solid that they both faced with trepidation totally unsure about the strength of these feelings.

"You've bewitched me too, Owen Nightingale... and I'm not sure there's a cure for how you make me feel... I'm not sure I would want it even if there was." She smiled when he lowered his head, leaning into her warm palm, stealing every drop of reassurance she was offering him. "I've never met a man like you... I've never met someone who makes me feel like you do."

She was the one he had been waiting for, his little kitty…

“Pressure built inside him, an unstoppable force that tore at his control. He ran his left hand over her sleek dark hair, twisted the black strands into his fist, and guided her downwards. Her eyes remained locked on his as she parted her lips and took him inside her mouth, the most erotic thing he had ever seen. He couldn't breathe as she took hold of his length in her right hand, clutching it tightly, and moved on him, taking him deep into her warm, wet mouth before shifting back, sucking as she withdrew.”

This story is hot, erotic and pacy. A book you have to read from cover to cover in one go. Loved the concept of this story.

The characters of Cait one very passionate lady who has to be careful in her sexual romps, and Owen one very hot male with a deep secret makes for one very enjoyable read. One of your best Ms Heaton.

Behind the scenes

Things heat up during filming and have the potential to become hotter, deeper, and much more real. But can Frankie trust Calder with her secret? Or is he doomed to sabotage his own happiness yet again?

Excerpt:

This was so friggin’ frustrating. Clearly, I wasn’t born to surf. I must’ve tried to get up on the damn board at least thirty times, and every time I ended up falling into the ocean, spewing water from my mouth when I finally made it back above the surface.

“Relax, Frankie. It’s not an easy thing to do. Being tense and frustrated is not going to help you,” Calder said.

Deep down I knew he was right, but I was a perfectionist by nature and it irked me that I was unable to get the hang of it. I turned my head to face Calder. He hopped off his own board and swam over to stand behind me, holding my board so he could help me try to catch a wave. “I’m so close and I just can’t get it. It’s maddening.”

“Here. Put your hands on top of the board. You need to relax.” I did as he asked and before I knew what was happening, his hands were on my shoulders massaging me. “Your muscles are so tense. You’ll catch your wave. You’ve got the movements down, just try not to overthink it.”

It was hard not to be tense. His hands felt like a brand on me. I both reveled in the feeling and wanted to pull away, sure that this exquisite torture would end in pain somehow.

“Alright,” he said, removing his hands after a minute. “You’re good now. This time, try it without being inside your head so much. Feel the board underneath you. Feel—don’t think.”

I nodded and hopped on my board, lying on my stomach and exhaling a deep breath, releasing all of my pent-up frustration, both sexual and otherwise. I deployed the same technique I normally did when on set before a take. I emptied my mind and let instinct guide me.

A large swell was coming up behind me and Calder gave me a small push, letting go of the board at just the right moment. “Go, go!”

I pushed up on my arms and leaned back on my knees then wobbled a little but managed to catch my balance. I used my hands to push up from the board slowly, coming to a crouched position on my board…and I stayed there.

Exhilaration raced through my body as I traveled along the top of the wave. Wind and saltwater spray whipped across my face as I teetered using my outstretched arms for balance. I couldn’t believe I’d finally managed to do it. I was so filled with joy it felt almost as if I would burst.

I turned my head to smile excitedly at Calder. He was swimming toward the shore, watching me with a huge childlike grin across his face. I threw my hands up over my head in a victory motion and promptly lost my balance and fell into the ocean.

That would teach me to think I’d conquered Mother Nature.

I could barely touch the bottom where I was, so when I emerged from the water I swam the short distance to my surfboard, crawled up on it, and straddled my legs around it.

Calder reached me moments later looking as happy as I’d ever seen him in the short time we’d gotten reacquainted with one another.

“That was killer,” he said and hefted himself up onto the surfboard so he sat facing me, straddling it too. I used my hands to balance on the board as he climbed on so I didn’t embarrass myself and fall off. Calder’s surfboard was attached to the rope strapped to his ankle and bobbed in the water beside us. “You did awesome. If you hadn’t turned to look at me, you would’ve ridden that one to the shore.” He leaned forward to hug me, closing the gap between us. It was a friendly hug, and I returned it by wrapping my arms around his muscular back. He stiffened and it made the already hard back muscles under my hands even harder. The mood quickly transformed from jubilation to one fraught with sexual tension and need.

I pulled back but Calder’s arms remained around me, and I found my face inches from his. I stared into those eyes that were bluer than the water we were floating on, my breath heavy in my chest, and he returned my gaze with half-lidded eyes.

I moved my hand up to his long, blond hair, which was matted to the side of his face, and played with it between my fingers. I’d never really been attracted to a guy with longer hair—until Calder.

His hand cupped my jaw. “Frankie…” he trailed off in a husky whisper then brought his mouth to mine in a gentle kiss. I was surprised that someone with his physical strength could manage something so tender.

My eyes darted up to his in surprise and his blue irises seemed to be questioning whether or not it was okay to do it again. I gave only the slightest of head nods and he leaned in again, pressing his lips to mine with the same soft touch but holding them there longer this time.

I pushed my fingers into the wet, sun kissed strands of his hair. He moaned, deep vibrations coming from his chest, and the tension between us snapped. Within seconds, his tongue pushed into my mouth and my other hand ran over his back, delighting in the feel of his hard muscles flexing underneath the wetsuit fabric as he ran his hands up and down my sides.

He tasted like saltwater and spearmint, and I vaguely remembered him chewing gum on the way over. My insides heated at the way he took ownership of the kiss, leading our tongues in a perfectly choreographed dance. The surfboard undulated below us as the ocean brought us closer to shore. As the wind picked up, a large wave jostled us, forcing our mouths apart. We both sat there straddling the board, gazing upon each other with heated eyes. I swear the rims of his irises were darker than I’d seen them before.

A beat later, Calder broke the spell, squeezing my shoulder in a friendly gesture with a casual smile on his face. “Ready to do that again?”

“Yeah, sure,” I said, a little disappointed that he was referring to the surfing and not the kiss. His quick transition from a heated, lust-filled moment to this ‘best buddies’ attitude had left me confused.

I was able to get up on my board a few more times before fatigue set in. I wasn’t particularly out of shape, though I didn’t have the fitness level Calder seemed to. He’d been in the water as long as I had and didn’t have any less energy than when we’d first set foot on the ocean’s sandy bottom.

I finally begged off, feeling bad that he’d spent so much time schooling me when I was sure he was eager to grab his own board and ride the waves.

I sat on the sand with my towel wrapped around me, enjoying the feeling of my sore muscles and the exhaustion that plagued them. And though my body may have been content being sedentary, my mind was far from it. I was happy Calder had shifted gears after our kiss and not made it into a big deal. It was a one-off. I needed to keep my head in the game and remember I had a job to do. I couldn’t afford to get caught up in him. There wasn’t room in my life for a wild card like Calder Fox.
