Excerpt:

Bright lights blinded from above and gleamed against the stark white floor. I hurtled down the narrow hall, desperate for escape.

With every pounding step, I felt the separation grow. A chasm rending and ripping until I felt myself splitting in two.

Gasping for breath, I stumbled out of the building and into the vacancy of the deep, deep night. Wind gusted, tumbling along the surface of the ground, a stir of agitation at my feet.

Above, the storm raged. Clouds dark and heavy and ominous.

Lightning struck. A crackle of energy shocked through the air. Wrapping me in coils of white-hot agony.

For a moment, I gave into it and let myself feel. I lifted my face to the tormented sky, hands gripping my hair as I screamed.

Screamed in anguish.

Screamed in regret.

Screamed loud enough I would never forget.

A crack of thunder opened the sky.

Rain poured.

My hands fisted at my sides, and I buried the memory of the way he’d felt in my arms, the memory of his face, in the deepest part of me, sealed it off and cemented my heart.

My spirit grasped and wove with the promise I had made him.

I will never fall in love again.

Not ever again.

Not after tonight.

“Sometimes fear shouts so loudly it drowns out everything else.”

Once again AL Jackson totally captivated me with her poetical and lyrical prose and totally submersed me into Lyrik and Tamar’s story. A story of two broken people that had the potential to heal one and another. A gravitational pull, side glances and a love to hate relationship all encapsulated into a story of putting the past to rest and living for the now. These two have a lot of pain and a lot of guilt but in doing so have isolated themselves, especially their hearts, but sometimes, just sometimes those broken hearts can feel out “the one.” Now it was just up to the two stubbornest people in the world to realise that.

“You might have given up on yourselves. Just don’t give up on each other.”

Lyrik was the guitarist in “Sunder.” He had the reputation of being a manwhore and usually ending up with at least a couple of women at the end of the night. But this was all a front and from the little glimmers into Lyrik that we gleaned from Baz’s story I was sure that there was a hell of a lot more to this dark, brooding man and AL Jackson did not let me down. I knew he carried a lot of pain and I had my theories and they were more or less right but the way that AL Jackson slowly lets you into the man behind the guitar you cannot help but take this man into your heart. His back story is heart breaking, he made his mistakes and now he was suffering the consequences but he has grown up somewhat and sometimes our past actions need to positively affect our future paths, not keep them stagnant and festering. He needed to move on, he needed to let go...would Tamar be the one to finally break through?

“…because we don’t need that kind of loyalty. Only thing you’re really loyal to is your misery.”

Tamar is Shea’s best friend and works behind the bar that the Sunder lads have come to frequent on a regular basis. The barbs and flirting between Lyrik and Tamar have been building for a year but Tamar is the ice queen and is certainly not for thawing. Tamar’s past will have you in tears and I always knew that she was hiding from something, but nothing could have prepared me for the truth. This woman has walls as tall as skyscrapers and it would take a miracle to break through the barriers that she has erected in fear. She wanted to be unknown, she wanted to hide but she was getting more and more frustrated with Lyrik, because the more she tried to hide the more he saw and this scared her, it actually terrified her. The more he saw, the more she felt and felt she was being betrayed by heart, but as I said above, sometimes the heart knows, it just takes the mind a little time to catch up.

“I was there. Because of a boy. A boy who reminded me I was brave.”

AL Jackson perfectly captured every emotion in this roller coaster of a ride. I knew their story would be far from easy but what these two had been through and find themselves going through really pulled at every heartstring. These two deserved each other, but their guilt and fears keep them from taking that leap of faith until they can’t and here is where this story really kicks off. To see the changes in these two was intense and beautiful to read, you could see little splinters of armour being chipped away with every conversation, with every kiss, with every touch…until they got scared and would pull back once again. That back and forth that can be so agonising to read about, felt so right as these two battled their feelings and their insecurities. It was a hell of a journey but it was one that needed to be taken to iron out their pasts so they could begin to think of a future. While I was put through the ringer with them I appreciated every word, every emotion.

“I love you, Lyrik West. And when I walk out that door, I promise you, it’s going to hurt.”
But you are worth all the pain.”

As usual with an AL Jackson read, I lived and breathed and this story and while those up and downs left me feeling unsure and pained I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and what a light AL Jackson left us with. A perfect ending to an intense, emotional read. A fantastic story once again and I cannot wait for the other band members to get their turn. There is a lot of mileage with these “Sunder” men.

“I hear you.”
“You sing my soul.”
