I first read Kylie Walker a few months ago with her book
House of Paine that I really enjoyed and it was the synopsis of this book that
drew me in. The potential this book had was for a great story and while the
author gave it a great shot it didn’t quite wow me.
Jude Falken was holed up in his new apartment for a month on
parole, he had been incarcerated for two years for involuntary manslaughter and
had to spend one month under house arrest before he was free to go. Jude was by
no means your average convicted felon. He was head of a fashion empire and had
been acting in self defense when tragedy struck for him, leaving his good name
and reputation forever tarnished.
Jillian Warren lives across the hall from Jude Falken with
her brother who just so happens to have been Jude’s best friend from college.
Jillian is also into fashion and has just finished her internship in Paris.
Having just got back to the States she needs to find herself a job and to get
over the broken heart that she left behind.
These two have fashion in common and a best friend/brother
who has sworn them both off the other, but when Jillian and Jude meet there is
obvious chemistry but will they succumb to temptation or will they heed
everyone’s warnings?
I liked the way that Kylie Walker interwove a little mystery
and suspense into this book as well as adorning us with Jude and Jillian’s
blossoming relationship. It seems that many paths are connected and just when
you think you really know someone, you actually don’t. Money and power has a
means of changing the most trust worthy people and this is brought to the
forefront in Across the Hall.
I loved Jude, he was a great character, who stood up for
what he believed in and especially who he believed in. He had been through hell
and yet he came out of it relatively unscathed and was still a lovely guy
through and through. Jillian was a bit harder to warm up to for me, her flip
flopping emotions were annoying at times and I just wanted her to stick to her
guns. For me though, what let this book down was character connection. I didn’t
feel it, I wanted that intensity, the deep and meaningful and I just felt that
the author skirted around this and didn’t reflect it in her writing. It had
great potential but just didn’t quite hit the spot. None the less, I enjoyed
the book though.
