Once, I took down terrorists on the front lines as a marine.
Now I'm in the business of bad.
I've sold guns to people others might not approve of.
I've eliminated the criminals, the lowlifes and the thugs who've tread on my turf.
And I looked the Sicilian Mafia boss in the eye and told him to f*** off.
No one tells me no, unless it's their last word.
I didn't just act the part of bad—I lived it. Then she stumbled into my life.
I tried to stay away from her. Tried focusing on moving my merchandise. But one smile from Terra was like a shot to the heart.
She's mine now. And no one threatens what's mine.

***ARC received for an honest review***
“…the union of family is a
greater bond than any other, with the exception of one. Love.”
This is my first book by Scott Hildreth and colour me
impressed. It is no secret I love my mafia books and I have to admit that is
what first drew me to this book, along with the cover. The mafia have always
been feared, you only read a little about what is said in papers but underneath
reporters license I have always been intrigued about the goings on behind
closed doors and what drives these men to be the men they choose to be…surely
it can’t always be about the money, maybe the notoriety or is just the buzz?
Who knows!
“Love has no boundaries, and at
that instant, for the first time, I felt that whatever connection anyone on
earth might have, we certainly had.”
The Gun Runner is a different spin on the mafia, the main
focus of this story is Tripp who desperately tries to stay out of their
clutches, but sometimes the promise of good ole “green” is too big an
opportunity to miss. Tripp was a marine, well versed in combat and undercover
ops and of course guns and their arsenal. Now out of service he is a gun
runner, her obtains, builds and sells guns to those causes he feel are worthy.
While he is selling illegally he does have his scruples about him. He doesn’t
sell to the man on the street, but more to causes to eradicate bad and
suffering, his heart was in the right place.
Tripp is alpha through and through, he oozes power, strength
and charm. He carries himself like a man in control and a panther ready to
strike. He was confident, charismatic and a very filthy talker. He commanded every
room he walked in and the attention of anyone within it, he exuded presence and
ultimately fear. His brothers in arms were like a family, the only family he
had and the scenes when these group of men together were at times intense and
well as hilarious.
“She asked me to leave her alone.”
“Yeah. Guess fuckin’ what? My old
high school sweetheart asked me not to pole it in her butt, too. And you know
what? She fuckin’ liked it. Women don’t always know what they want. What they
say and what they want is two different things. Remember that. Words of wisdom
from Cap’s vault.”
Tripp and Terra’s paths cross on an innocuous visit to a
coffee shop for his morning cup of Joe. Tripp witnesses Terra being manhandled and
dragged across a car park by her ex and being the noble man he was; he steps in
to help a damsel in distress. These two were instantly attracted to each other
and while Terra would have been more than happy to bump uglies with her saviour,
Tripp was more reserved. He wasn’t looking, but there was something about Terra
that kept him frequenting the same coffee shop day after day in the hope that
their paths cross once again.
Terra and Tripp were insanely hot together, holy combustion
and Scott Hildreth really hit the nail on the head with the attraction, passion
and chemistry between these two. It is not often I gel with a male authors take
on romance, but Scott Hildreth did really well in portraying both Terra and
Tripp’s thoughts and feelings.
“When I’m with you, nothing else
matters. When nothing else matters, the world around me dissolves, leaving only
you. And. Nothing. Else. Matters.”
Terra was a spoiled trust fund baby who had probably seen
more corruption and bloodshed than Tripp. She was a mafia princess, the
daughter of a mob boss and was well and truly under her daddy’s thumb. Despite
the family business, Terra wanted no part and was actually truly unhappy in the
fact that her surname put many people off even being her friend. She was lonely
and for once just wanted to be normal, so it is no surprise she keeps her
surname to herself while getting to know Tripp. Terra though was likeable,
despite her little lies, she was a smart cookie, perceptive and deceptive but
that is no surprise given the blood running through her veins.
“My father would kill me if he
found out what I was doing, but Michael was so much more than a novelty to me.
He was everything I wanted in a man, but he wasn’t Italian and I didn’t think
he was catholic…”
This is a relationship built on lies, deceit and omissions
but one where they come to bite you on the bum. How long can Terra keep her
true identity a secret and can Tripp’s “investor” job title really keeps Terra
from finding out the true line of work he is in. However, this is all about the
chemistry, the relationship build from friendship to more and that
all-consuming love story. But also, this book has plenty of action to keep you
engrossed from page to page. Covert missions, deals and dipping toes all bring
this story to an engrossing head and has really whetted the appetite for what
is to come.
I read this in one sitting, was glued from page to page and
now I am eagerly anticipating the next one…what is on the cards for these two?
Will a relationship built on a bed of lies really stand a chance and will the
mafia get their grip into Tripp? This man has a cunning head on his shoulders
and I feel that the mafia may have just met their match…bring on book 2.
