***ARC received for an honest review***
“These are the moments that leave
marks on your heart. Savor it, remember the details, sear it into your memory.
This scar will be your story down the road.”
Stephie Walls really brings her ‘A’ Game with Beauty Mark.
This book ticked all my boxes, I was hooked from start to finish and couldn’t
put this book down. With characters in their thirties and forties, I was at
home and I think it is this age group that resonated deep within and personally
gave me that intense character connection that I crave. As much as I love
reading about the younger generation when you get a great book in your age group
you find yourself relating more, empathising more and being able to put
yourself in their shoes, the reality and joys of life experience.
I also have to say I love books about authors, authors
writing about their experiences in getting themselves out there. We see it on
the periphery looking in, but to get the nuts and bolts always intrigues me.
Our heroine, Callie, is a budding author and when this book starts she is in a
mundane nine-to-five job, bored out of her skull, until one day she decides to
take the chance. With a few months’ worth of savings, she quits her job and
begins writing her first novel…not as easy as she first thought. She soon finds
her new permanent office is the local Starbucks and it is here that Callie
Clark Author begins in more ways than one.
Callie Clark is one of the lucky ones, her first book
launches her career and the reward is the publishing contract of her dreams. Professionally,
Callie Clark is in the stratosphere, her personal life, not so much and with
the help of her best friends Hayden and Liam, they pull her out of the dark
depths of despair.
“You don’t have to be his victim,
Callie. You can choose to be a survivor…”
Her best friend, Hayden was an amazing character and these
two together were family, always there for one and other, in good times and
bad. Their friendship is one that we all want, one where they can be your
confidante, your rock, your biggest supporter, yet when it comes to it, they
will tell you home truths with only love and your best interests as their ammunition.
“You need to get your head out of
your ass before you drown in shit…”
Liam was high up in the chain of the publishing house that
Callie was contracted to. Forever a singleton, handsome, intelligent, but most
of all, had a heart of gold. Liam went above and beyond, all the time and as a
male character, Stephie Walls nailed him.
Sometimes, when a book spans ten plus years you find your
interest waning and the characters lose their allure and the inclination to
read dies off…that is not the case with Beauty Mark. The more time I spent with
these characters, the more time I wanted and I couldn’t turn the pages fast
enough. Also, because I spent so much of their lives with them I was heavily
invested in their story both mentally and emotionally and this led to one hell
of an emotional roller coaster ride at times.
“His touch rolls out like the
waves on the shore…the sunrise – the sunset…he’s the beauty and the sport, the
beginning and the end. Everything about him leaves imprints on my life.”
In short, I adored this book, the words and story are just
as beautiful as its cover. Stephie Walls nailed her characters, gave us a
memorable, addictive plot and one unputdownable read. The dialogue was on
point, the emotion was prevalent throughout and the smattering of wit lightened
up the pages. The relationships between these characters were honest and real
and all characters had their part to play and were well developed. I cannot
wait to see what comes next from this author.
