Review ~ Black Lies by Alessandra Torre

Reviewed by Donna ~ 5 “never saw that coming” stars!!

“True love makes a person reckless, makes them take risks and make sacrifices. True love tests the boundaries of our person, makes us yearn to be better and fight for the ground we stand on. I will fight for this love. Lie for it. Steal for it. It is worthy of that.”

With a synopsis like this I was intrigued, hell, who couldn’t be:-

“Brant:
Became a tech billionaire by his twentieth birthday. Has been in a relationship with me for 3 years.
Has proposed 4 times. Been rejected 4 times.

Lee:
Cuts grass when he’s not banging housewives. Good with his hands, his mouth, and his cock. Has been pursued relentlessly by me for almost 2 years, whether he knows it or not.

Go ahead. Judge me. You have no idea what my love entails.

If you think you’ve heard this story before, trust me – you haven’t”

This book was so not what I was expecting, the synopsis is accurate, I haven’t! It was unique, captivating and intriguing. Twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, I have to admit I was totally blindsided. I had ideas, little rumblings going on around my head, I knew that there had to be a logical explanation, but I just couldn’t get it, just couldn’t put my finger on it and I love it when that happens, there is nothing cliché in this book…not one tiny bit.

This book asks a very pertinent question “What would you have done?” My answer – the exact same thing, go ahead, judge me, but once you read, you will see and I bet you say the exact same thing.

Layana Fairmont has never wanted for anything; she has had a privileged upbringing and has always run in the top social circles. But she wasn’t happy, but she did what she did to keep her parents happy, she was just biding her time until her 25th birthday. The story starts when she hits 25 and she can finally draw down her trust fund. Now she can live her life her way, she still leads a charmed life but instead of bowing down now to her parents she devotes her spare time to charity, to the Homeless Youth of America. Her mother wanted her to meet a man that could keep her in the lifestyle she was accustomed too, someone that the wealthy would approve of and that her parents would approve of. Layana was nothing like her mother, she just wanted to love and be loved, she was generous and selfless, and she wanted to make a difference.

Layana has to attend one of those high society gatherings that she hates, but she forces herself to go. It is here that she meets Brant Sharp. Brant Sharp hardly ever makes public appearances, he keeps himself to himself in the most part he is a hermit a recluse. He was a child prodigy in computer engineering, as a young teenager he had designed the next generation of computers and had not looked back since. He was a self-made billionaire, but he was also a philanthropist and had generously donated the majority of the donations to Layana’s own charity the Homeless Youth of America. There was a connection from the start with these two, but believing that she was just going to have a one night stand she took him home. Brant worshipped her and what she thought was only going to be one night suddenly didn’t seem that appetising, she wanted more, a lot more of Brant Sharp.

“He was everything I didn’t expect. Quietly confident. Unassuming. Gorgeous. Intense interest that didn’t play games.”

They have a lot of obstacles in their way, including meddling family that only want to keep them apart. But Brant is just as smitten as Layana and these two fight for what they want, to love and to be loved, to be cherished, to be worshipped and most of all, be happy. Their relationship is passionate and romantic, the both love completely and love hard, they have the ideal relationship until…

“I love her completely. She returns the love wildly. This love is worth the unsaid truths. The hidden lies.”

Just when all seems to be going well, Layana’s life is turned upside down, secrets are revealed and Layana feels the walls of her relationship come crashing down. This secret has the power to destroy and it is at this time that Layana meets Lee.

“I just want to know why. Why does she cheat on me? What do I not provide for her? What part of me is not good enough? Why, when her love for me burns bright enough to singe… does she sneak off with a stranger ? My biggest fear is that she loves him. My biggest fear is that he has wormed his way into her heart.”

Lee is everything that Brant isn’t. He is a hot head, he is cocky, he is arrogant, he is self-assured, he is a working man and he is aggressive. The first time they meet, once again Layana is smitten. She cannot help the emotional and physical pull that she has to him. She pursues him relentlessly, going above and beyond to make sure that he is hers and hers alone.

“I loved my mouth in his, the flex of his tongue under mine. We did not feel like strangers; our mouths instinctively knew each other.”

And this is where I stop, you have the basics and now you have to read to find out the rest. All I can say is for those that do not read cheating and love triangles, please, please, please take a chance and read this book. It is unconventional; it is a story about loving completely, unconditionally, fiercely and doing whatever it takes to keep that love. Going above and beyond, fighting for what and who you love, no matter the consequences or the repercussions.

This is a unique story that will keep you guessing and I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Yes it will totally warp your mind, but the underlying sentiment will have you reeling at the end. You will ask yourself questions, you will think about it for days, but most of all I am sure that you will love this book. Fantastic story, I totally and utterly loved it.

“Without the lies, without the secrets… it is better than it has ever been. I break beneath his body and sign away the last bit of my heart to this man. This complicated, layered, brilliant man. Owner of my soul.”
