Hawkin Play, the bad boy rock star with a good guy heart, has lived a lifetime of cleaning up after his twin brother’s mistakes. Hunter’s most recent screwup could land Hawke in jail and risk the band’s future. Hawke agrees to guest lecture at a local college to stay in the judge’s good graces—and a bet with his bandmate to seduce his sexy teaching assistant is icing on the cake.

Quinlan Westin is harder to bed than Hawke imagined. She knows his type and is determined to avoid the rocker at all costs—even if their attraction runs deeper than simple lust.

Just as Hawke might finally be winning over the girl, his brother has other plans. When Hunter realizes his twin finally has a weakness, he’ll stop at nothing to take advantage....

Quinlan

I walk toward him, the sight of him slightly unkempt with a carefree smile he hasn’t possessed for days calls to my libido on so many levels it’s ridiculous. He brings a shot of something to his mouth and I don’t even give a second thought to what it is because I know I’ll taste it on my lips momentarily.

He hums deep in his throat when I step up into his body and there is something so inherently sexy about the sound—knowing that I caused that reaction—that together with the feel of his firm body against mine lets me know there will be no interruptions this time.

He looks at me, eyes darkening and one hand sliding beneath my shirt a beat before our lips meet in a hungry, no-holds-barred kiss. His empty bottle clatters on the counter behind him so that his other hand can join in the temptation. I lose myself in the taste of the tequila on his tongue, and the hypnotizing feeling of his hands on my body.

The music thumps hard around us, the noise buzzes, and the faint scent of cigarette smoke wafts in from outside but it’s as if none of it hits me because I’m consumed by everything about him: his taste, his cologne, the groan I can’t hear but can feel against our connected chests, the heat of his body. I don’t care who’s watching because it’s almost as if the overwhelming emotions that he’s experienced all week long are manifesting themselves into our mutual desperation.

“Upstairs. Now,” he murmurs against my lips, and I’ve never heard more perfect words. He grasps the bottle of tequila behind him in one hand and my hand in the other without saying anything further and walks with purpose through the crowd. I can’t see his face but he must have a determined look on it because not one person stops him to talk when that’s been the norm for the evening thus far. At the bottom of the stairs, I catch the eyes of the three wannabe women and just smirk. Call me bitchy, but I can’t help it, I’m with the one they were hoping to land tonight.

“I’ve been fighting my whole life, maybe I don’t have any fight left.”

This is a standalone spin-off from the Driven series but some of our favourites do make an appearance. Even though Colton does not appear very often our man certainly makes up for it when he does. This story centres on Quinlan, Colton’s sister and Hawkin Play, the lead singer of the band Bent. So, just to whet your appetites, we have hot racing drivers and hot rockers all rolled into one book so there is definitely something for everyone.

We have already met Quinlan throughout the Driven series and she was always a character that we didn’t really know that much about. Quinlan was busy at college finishing her degree and she was determined that she was going to do well. While her work load was heavy she still found time to be a TA and relished the extra challenges that she was taking on. She was that kind of person, good on the inside and out, extremely helpful and loyal, but she had sass and she was one feisty girl.

“Lips like an angel, body made for sin, and feisty enough to rival the devils fire?”

Hawkin Play was our very own rocker with his own 747 full of baggage. He had the world on his shoulders and was struggling for breath at times. Being the oldest he felt he had responsibilities, especially after making promises that he was far too young to understand or keep, but he was a man of his word. Living up to the reputation of a rocker he liked his women and had never let one get close and he didn’t do repeat performances. But underneath that façade was a beautiful man that had a heart of gold, it just needed to be let out.

“One person can take on only so much responsibility without buckling from its weight.”

I absolutely loved the slow build between these two, the witty banter back and forth had me in hysterics many times and Quinlan certainly gave as good as she got. Hawkin had finally met someone who didn’t care who he was or what he was. Quinlan didn’t treat him any differently and wasn’t there for the super star status, she had grown up with it and she was definitely far from star struck.

“You think you have me pegged, don’t you? I assure you, square or round, I don’t fit in any predetermined hole.”

Without a doubt the intense sizzle and chemistry that these two shared radiated off the pages. You knew that this hate/love relationship was going to be intense once they both realised what was happening. Kristy captured this pull and pull brilliantly and you were on the edge of your seat wildly anticipating that first kiss, that first touch, that first everything. We all know that Kristy can write a mean sex scene and this book is no different, Kristy Bromberg had me blushing!! These two certainly made music together…in more ways than one and let me just add I will never look at a guitar pick the same again.

Quinlan and Hawkin were perfect together, Quinlan understood Hawkin on such a deep level. She knew what he needed and when. So much had happened to Hawkin in his past and it was beautiful to watch him slowly open up. This was not something he did lightly so with every burden that he unloaded onto Quinlan it was like a giant leap in the progress of their relationship. As this relationship thing is new to him, you knew he was going to make his mistakes and he does, but we all love a bit on angst and this book was perfectly balanced with regards to that. Nothing over the top, just a voyage of discovery the two of them needed to take.

“C’mon, you know you want to be the start to my burst.”
“More like the fruit to your loop.”

As with any Kristy Bromberg book there are a plethora of quotes in this book that resonated deep. Kristy always manages to capture your heart and soul with her characters and this book is no different and some of the paragraphs that I had highlighted had literally reduced me to tears. Kristy always manages to captivate me with her words and knowing exactly what had happened in Hawkin’s past only made her words cut that much deeper.

“When he begins to speak, the students hang on his every word. But it’s the words he’s left unspoken that captivate me the most.”

You cannot help but be moved by Hawkin’s back story, this story does cover some tough subjects but as usual they are covered delicately and sympathetically. Hawkin has a lot of demons that he needs to face and conquer and his self-doubt at his propensity to love and be loved was heart shattering at times. I have to say his twin, Hunter, was constantly on my shit list. Apart from Tawny, I have never disliked a Kristy Bromberg character, but my hatred for him has gone to a totally new level.

“Every man has his breaking point, and his absolute silence makes me fear that he just reached his.”

While I felt the pace at the start was a bit slow, this book certainly kicked into gear and you will be totally captivated by Quinlan and Hawkin’s story. We have cameo appearances from some much loved bands that we have read about and that only enhanced how close this book world has become now. Once again Kristy has delivered a book that will leave its indelible mark on my heart. Quinlan and Hawkin will have you eating out of their hands and we have now been given another couple that are a great addition to this Driven family.

“Love is nothing more than a meaningless word in a lyric until someone comes along and makes the music to bring it to life...and sweetness, you’re helping me make the music for it, one instrument at a time.”
