Author: Brittainy C. Cherry
Genre: Romance

Release Date: March 25, 2016

Book Description:

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision--a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

“I met my best friend in the checkout lane of a grocery store. And my life was never the same again.”

I am a huge Brittainy C Cherry fan and I have been anxiously waiting to read this one. From the synopsis alone I was expecting a heart wrenching story in keeping with the authors style and the first book in this series, The Air He Breathes which I loved with a passion.

This is a standalone book and is a friends to lover’s story as well as second chance romance, two plot devices that I love to read about. This story spans five years and is the life’s and loves of two unlikeliest of friends Logan and Alyssa.

Logan was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, a junkie for a mother, a drug dealer for a dad and living a life on the bread line, not knowing where his next meal was going to come from. Being surrounded by drugs and its paraphernalia it was no surprise that Logan sometimes uses to escape the bleakness that is his life and his reality.

“I’m a mess, High. I’m a mess. I’ve always been a mess. I’ll always be a mess.”

Alyssa had a heart of gold but also has her issues, she has a mother that is more interested in work and money rather than showing her daughter any attention and has a sister that her mother puts on a pedestal and is someone that Alyssa could never emulate. Alyssa works in grocery store to make some extra cash and it is here that she meets Logan.

Alyssa had watched Logan from afar, she had studied him and knew that he had a hard life but there was something about him that drew her eyes to his, always. One day he tries to use his food card and it gets rejected and knowing that Logan was obviously starving she pays for his groceries, her good deed for the day. Reluctantly Logan accepts but it is this act of kindness that starts the strongest of friendships. A friendship that would stand the test of time…until it doesn’t.

“My greatest fucking High…”
“My most painful Lo…”

Logan’s life is a far cry from Alyssa’s and even though on the outside they have nothing in common, they have a lot more than you would think. Logan spends his days looking after his drug riddled mother and saving her from beatings from his dead end dad and then spends his nights with Alyssa, just chatting for the most part. Alyssa is Logan’s High, she makes his crappy world better and never fails to bring his spirits up and give him comfort when he most needs it. Logan is Alyssa’s Lo, at first I thought it was because it was the first two letters of his name but it soon becomes apparent it is because he feels he doesn’t deserve her, he has severe self-worth issues and just cannot understand why this beautiful girl wants to be his friend.

“When she felt cold, I gave her my hoodie. When my heart broke, she held my hand.”

Logan does have one other best friend and that is his half-brother, Kellan. If ever prizes should be given for the best big brother, Kellan would win it hands down, but he cannot always be around when Logan needs him, although he tries his damnedest.

This is Logan and Alyssa’s story from best friends to lovers. We are told their story from beginning to end and all the ups and downs and trials and tribulations in between. These two have a lot to overcome and a lot of insecurities to put to bed but when you have a strong connection like these two had you always have that belief that true love wins. Brittainy C Cherry delivers their story with emotion and passion, but for me, I just didn’t get that character connection that I love. While I believed in the love that Alyssa had for Logan, for me I just didn’t connect with Logan at all. I sympathised and empathised for sure, but I just didn’t believe in his feelings for Alyssa, his actions did not back up his emotions and while I could kind of understand I just didn’t think he would treat someone that way and certainly not the one person, other than his brother, that had been there for him through thick and thin. However, this was just my feelings and a lot of my friends have a totally different opinion. But, that is the beauty of books, we all read differently and while I didn’t get that connection that I love, I still had the honour of reading a beautiful story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
