“Q was my destination. He was
also my journey. My test. He was me.”
The Monster’s in The Dark Series was my first introduction
to Pepper Winters and one that I have never looked back from. Q and his
esclave, Tess have always had a permanent place in my heart as their story
totally captured my imagination as well as my heart. Two broken souls brought
together in harrowing circumstances yet both finding something that they never
thought possible, love.
“She was more than my world. She
was more than my lover, best friend and partner. She was the blood in my heart,
the breath in my lungs, the fucking marrow in my bones. Without her, I wouldn’t
exist. Without her, my body would be nothingness: no heartbeats, no mind, no
man…no animal.”
Je Suis a Toi is the icing on the cake for us Q and Tess
fans, we left them with their happy ever after, but I often wondered how they
got on further down the road. Je Suis a Toi, gives us that insight and it was
very much welcomed.
It is Q’s birthday and Tess is planning a surprise getaway.
Q has been distant and Tess is very much aware he is hiding something from her,
which Q never does. Their relationship thrives on honesty and being totally
open with one and other so Tess knows that whatever is bothering him is
serious. In the first instance she is hurt, but she knows that when he is ready
he will tell her, albeit she may drive herself insane first.
“Don’t ever doubt me, Tess. Never
doubt us.”
With this couple though, if anything is certain it is that
nothing will come between them, not errant thoughts nor insecurities, not
changes in wants or needs not even Q’s inane beliefs that his darkness with
consume Tess. These two thrive on their darkness, it is their darkness that
makes them…them. It is their darkness that embraces them as husband and wife
and a darkness they both need down to the marrow in their bones.
“She made me so fucking happy.
But also made me hate myself.”
This story beautifully wraps up Q and Tess’s story. I loved
catching up with these two and this story just solidified the love that I have
for them as a couple. Pepper Winters always delivers that emotion and that
character connection that I crave and everything that these two go through I
felt. It is testament to life that marriages have little speed bumps, these two
hit a little one but these two have a soul deep bond and one that is
indestructible. I loved it and I adore this couple.
“Don’t struggle. You know I’ll keep you safe.” Q’s murmur danced down my back.
My panic receded as trust billowed fast and true.
Q was born into darkness, but he’d never baptized me in his blackest desires. And because of that, I could implicitly say he spoke the truth. No matter what he did to me, he would never truly harm me.
Q paused, his tattooed chest soaking. His feathered sparrows fluffing off droplets almost alive on his skin. “I told you once never to fall for me. That I didn’t want the curse of breaking your heart while I broke so many other pieces of you.” His hands landed on my breasts, cupping them reverently. “Yet you fought me, just like you said you would. You fell for me, just like you promised me you would. And now, you’re willing to give me what I need even after I tricked you and lied.”
I swayed as I fell even deeper for this complex husband of mine. Q was all my fantasies in one glorious lifetime. The fact he finally wanted to share me with his child spoke volumes about his capacity to love.
“I’m so glad you ignored me, esclave.” His fingertips branded my nipples with pain. “So fucking happy you married me.” Pushing me backward, he smiled harshly as my spine met the pool wall. His chest strained as he sucked in a heavy breath. “You’re so fucking beautiful.”
My heart hammered in my ears as he kissed me.
His tongue laced with mine, and I sank into the sweet embrace, knowing it would be the last I received tonight. The air crackled with an impending storm. Q’s control frayed every second, his eyes drenching in determination and the salacious need to hurt.
Breaking the kiss, he opened his hand, revealing the other item he’d retrieved.
A tiny pair of silver scissors.
