“But without trust, every beautiful thing you’ve taught me will eventually be destroyed.”

Billionaire Blackmail was a quick easy read that I read in a few hours. Alison Aimes is a new to me author and I found myself intrigued by the synopsis so I dived in. Alison Aimes delivers a fast paced book and one where events happen very quickly, for me personally, I would have like some embellishments and explanations to understand the situations a little better and felt that this kind of story would have been better a little longer. We are given little to nothing of their back story and I felt that this would have helped understand their relationship, their dynamic and given a greater insight into Nik’s teams feelings around her. But none the less, I enjoyed it, I was eager to find out who the culprit was and despite my initial reservations were championing this couple along.

Nik Valenti is a billionaire business man that has been led to believe that his ex-girlfriend has embezzled him out of five million dollars. Although deep down he didn’t want to believe it the evidence was damning and so his plot for revenge begins. Nik has extreme trust issues with everyone, not just girlfriends. This is the result of a mother who left him more times than he could count and was only interested in her next trick. Nik had built the business himself, respected his staff and keeping them employed was his biggest concern. Being that his company was cyber security this breach could have devastating consequences, in more ways than one.

“I let you in…Like you asked. Then what happened? Exactly what I expected. You abandoned me. Like everyone else.”

Sara was an accountant, extremely good at her job and had a definite penchant for numbers. Her parents were thieves and crooks and she had always worked hard to prove that she was different and was nothing like her parents. Her brother unfortunately was following down their paths and his addictions to alcohol and drugs didn’t help matters either. Sara was extremely protective of her brother though and tried her hardest to keep him on the straight and narrow, but sometimes you just have to realise when you are flogging a dead horse. Her brother, took advantage and like a sponge Sara sucked it up.

“It’s hard to watch someone you care about destroy himself.”

Nik confronts Sara about the theft and she adamantly denies it, she is just as confused as he is, but is this something that her brother has secretly got her involved with? Not knowing who to trust or how to clear her name, the battle is on, but will Nik believe her?

“Because the only thing stupider than being a sucker who’d fallen for a beautiful woman with secrets was being a sucker who’d fallen for a beautiful woman with secrets who’d already screwed you over once.”

Both Nik and Sara have trust issues and a lot of this book is the battle of their wills and their inability to put their faith in others. The too and fro did get a little tedious at times but I could understand both their reticence to get involved once again. The chemistry was on point though, I felt their attraction and their yearning to get what they once had back. The back and forth and flip flop of emotions will have you dizzy at times but it was a realistic interpretation considering the circumstances they found themselves in. It is that inherent need to protect yourself while trying to give credence to your gut and heart that really holds these two back.

“I’m just saying here I am, everybody thinking the worst, and I’m still standing. I’m still breathing and fighting and living. It’s oddly liberating.”

I did find the reveal of the embezzler a little rushed and would have liked to have learned more about the whys and hows, while they were brushed upon a coup like this deserved some embellishment. In summary though, I liked it, fast paced, a little angsty, a little suspense and a captivating read.
