“If you love a southern woman raise your glass, if you don’t, raise your standards.”

I have to take my hat off to Kate Stewart, she has had a phenomenal year this year and has delivered book after book. Three books, one novella, all five star reads for me and that has never happened to me before. For someone that reads as much I do, only 10-15% of my reads are 5 stars so this is a huge achievement and testament to just how far Kate Stewart’s writing has come. Anything but Minor, the first book in this standalone series is still my favourite read of 2016 but Major Love came extremely close. Although this can be read as a standalone the characters from Anything but Minor do appear and I highly recommend reading it first.

Major Love is a combination of emotional and angst that Kate Stewart is renowned for along with the humour, wit and banter that she debuted with Anything but Minor, for me, this was the best of both worlds and Kate Stewart well and truly hit a home run.

Andy was Rafe’s best friend, he was a brew master, a bar owner and a minor-league catcher. He had been the victim of unrequited love and having loved someone for so long with nothing in return his heart and his confidence was shattered. With Miss Unrequited now out of the picture Andy is nursing his broken heart at the bottom of a bottle and with Rafe’s impending marriage to Alice and him being best man, his mood was not in the right place.

“Only a woman could make a man this weak.”

April is a 911 despatcher and is Alice’s best friend. She has just come out of a long-term relationship and is living with her sister and her kids. Her sister is newly widowed and needs all the help she can get. Her brother-in-law’s death hit April hard as they were best friends and he was killed in action, being a despatcher, unsavoury events unfurl all the time, but having to listen to them in all their gory details leaves a lasting effect. April has a heart of gold and will do anything for anyone and is self-sacrificing in every way, she is extremely strong and independent but everyone has a breaking point.

“who you are isn’t something a smart man will let go of. Remember that.”

April and Rafe meet at the wedding celebrations of Rafe and Alice starting with the engagement party. With drunken confessions and whispered promises April feels an immediate connection to Andy, but a bottle of booze comes between the morning after and the night befores memories. Now in close proximity in the run up to the wedding April and Andy become friends but will broken hearts and empty promises come between them or become the fuel to put both of them on the path of healing?

“Promise me something… Give that big heart to a man that deserves it, okay? Make him earn it, make him earn you.”

This was a slow burn, which I absolutely adored. With two broken characters the chance of instalove is nil and I am glad that these two took their time to get to know one and other before taking that next step. With that constant undercurrent of attraction constantly sizzling beneath the surface, when the point of combustion comes Kate Stewart truly delivers. This book is seriously hot!! With characters that are real and an intense character connection, Kate Stewart delivered on all the emotions. I had tears, lots of tears and I cried tears of laughter, my emotions were all over the place as Kate Stewart played my heart strings like a master violinist.

“I want you to stir the puddin’”

This was an intense and beautiful story, one that ticked every one of my boxes and once again delivered an unforgettable hero. This was more than a romance; it was a journey of healing for both characters and one that Kate Stewart delivered with intensity and realism. I cannot wait to see what Kate Stewart delivers next, one thing I do know is that I will be at the front of the queue patiently waiting.
