OMG, what a tangled web Skye Warren has weaved with The
Pawn. I am still in shock and desperate for the next book, is it January yet?
Skye Warren is a new to me author but she will no longer be a stranger. This
book had me captivated from start to finish, going in with the misconception of
just another “virginity auction” book Skye Warren brings a lot more to the
table with an intriguing plot and one intense mind fuck. I adore my dark reads,
I love trying to understand the characters, trying to see through the layers
and peeling back the onion one layer at a time. While our heroine is an easy read,
and wears her heart on her sleeve our anti-hero is a totally different kettle
of fish.

Avery James led an affluent life, a father she worshipped,
private school and more money than she knew what to do with, but she was
grounded. Her father was super protective and his daughter was his life. Avery
had her life sorted, she was nearing graduating, with a degree that she was
passionate about, she was engaged to be married to a potential senator and life
was good...until it wasn’t.
“You’re innocent. And I’m going
to ruin you.”
When her father is up on charges of fraud and embezzlement
and subsequently found guilty, the life she knew disappeared. Her fiancé dumps
her for fear of his reputation and all of her family’s assets are stripped and
sold. It seems her father’s criminal conviction and punishment is not deemed as
sufficient and when one of his victims takes his retribution into their own
hands, her father is left near death and needing constant medical attention.

Gabriel Miller is an enigma, he is one of the bad guys errrr
good guys errrr bad guys…hell I don’t know what or who he is. He is as complex as
they come and shrouded in secrets. Despite his outward persona during this
story you see the chinks in his armour or are those part of the game too? This
is where Skye Warren weaves her worst, you know you shouldn’t care about him,
you know you shouldn’t like him, hell you shouldn’t even love him but there is
something about the man with swirling golden orbs that lures you into his web
like a helpless fly, just waiting to be eaten alive and quite frankly, Avery
didn’t stand a chance.
“Everything he says is designed
to scare me. Everything he does is designed to knock me down.”
As secrets are revealed and pasts are seemingly intertwined
everything you thought you knew is blown all to hell and you are left reeling.
This though is what this type of read is all about, I love the rug being pulled
out from under me, I love being sideswiped. I am sure there is more to this
story than meets than eye and I am sure that Skye Warren is going to make us
wait…so with baited breath I’m waiting…NOT SO PATIENTLY WAITING.
