Book Description:

As the son of an Irish mobster, Connor O’Neil spent his boyhood hiding from the horrors of his own home. His one reprieve was a girl he knew only as Evelyn, but even she was taken away. As a man, Connor is determined to stay away from his father’s business. With Sean, participation is not a request, but a demand. The truth is, Connor might be more like the evil he’s trying to hide away from than he would like to admit.

And he’s already spent years trying to cover the scars left over from the pain.

A chance encounter puts the lost girl from his past back on his path, and he no longer has a choice but to face the darkness he’s been ignoring for years.

Evelyn. Sasha. Slave.

She doesn’t really know who she is anymore.

Or maybe she does, and she doesn’t want to tell.

She isn’t the same as she once was—now a thing to be kept and maintained, shuffled from owner to owner until it was her time to go. She only became Connor’s because he took her when he knew she wasn’t his to take.

Except she isn’t Connor’s at all …

And he can’t keep her hidden forever.

~Inflict is a Standalone Romance with graphic depictions of violence, sexual scenes, dark elements and a HEA. It is not recommended for those under the age of 18.

“Only the bloodiest ones wear the crown.”

I have read a lot of books by Bethany-Kris, she has fast become one of my go to mafia authors and Inflict was another great addition. Inflict is a standalone and delves into the side of the Irish Mafia in America and I have to say I absolutely loved the Irish brogue throughout this book, it was fecking brilliant!

“Full circle. Life was just making its rounds again.”

Connor and Evelyn were neighbours as kids and despite being kept in solitude they managed to find one and other and forge a friendship. Connor was the son of an Irish mob boss called Sean and while this should come with affluence and pretension the only thing Connor knew was punishment and repugnance. Connor’s mum had died when he was a new-born and his father’s wrath and ire was the only thing he knew and he never knew why. Connor tried to stay out of his father’s way, yet he was always found and everything he liked or loved was always taken away…including Evelyn.

Now an adult, Connor is still the prodigal son and he tries to keep as far away from his father’s hand as he can but their paths cross at least once a week, much to Connor’s chagrin. Connor’s upbringing has left him extremely broken and constantly fretting that he is his father’s son, his penchant for knives and bare knuckle fighting goes some ways in which to channel his anger, but he is still one of his father’s henchman whether he wants to or not.

“Connor was no better than this father underneath the mask he wore. Sean was simply more liable to take his mask off, and show the world his truths, while he laughed in their faces and enjoyed every moment of it.”

On one such job, Connor got a lot more than he bargained for and one that would change his life forever. Evelyn lost her life as she knew it the same night that Connor lost his best friend and when their paths cross in the unlikeliest of circumstances Connor is about to take on the biggest fight of his life and it will take more than knives and bare knuckles.

“Learn to trust someone other than yourself.”

Connor and Evelyn were a great couple, both broken by their lives yet could always seek solitude in each other. Both from similar backgrounds and yet their lives growing up couldn’t be any more different. Life has marred their souls and it seems life isn’t finished with them yet. Connor lost her once and he will fight every one his way to keep her, even if that means going up against the man he despises the most…his father.

“Some monsters needed to stay sleeping. Sean was one of those.”

Bethany-Kris delivers an honest and heartfelt read with Inflict. The character connection was spot on and you couldn’t help but take Connor and Evelyn into your heart and soul. Yes, both characters have their flaws and are deeply scarred, but it is these scars that give them their strength. Connor is no angel, in the life he has lived, he couldn’t not be, but he is as far from his father’s son as he could be. Connor had a heart, something his father definitely lacked and when that heart starts beating once again when he finds Evelyn, you finally get to see the real Connor underneath…he finally had something to live and fight for.

“It was cause and effect. Create pain to destroy pain. Create scars to hide scars. Cut in, bleed out. Breathe in, breathe out.”

This book was highly addicting and unputdownable. As I said above, the Irish brogue was extremely well done and makes that character connection all the more palpable as this strong Irish man wheedles his way into your heart. I loved the world that Bethany-Kris created and I adored Connor’s best friend, Killian, he was a great addition to this story. While Bethany-Kris is not a standalone author, she definitely gives the reader enough, no stones unturned and all answers given. Loved, loved, loved this book.

“…but he loved her, so he gave her whatever the feck her black heart desired. After all, it made his black heart keep beating.”
