Our Review:

***ARC received for an honest review***

“His hands were instruments of brutal precision, and his cock was a means of punishment. He wasn’t the man I’d married, but he was my husband.”

This is the CD Reiss that I love, perfect, articulate, lyrical prose, compelling, thought provoking, intense and brutally honest with a side of raw unadulterated sex. Rough Edge is a story veiled in mystery, a forced exploration of eroticism and BDSM dragged from shades of grey to the darkest pits of black. A complex and brutally honest account of two people that find themselves on a precipice that neither understand or want to topple over. This book was unputdownable, another night with little sleep and only a reader left on the edge for the next book. The possibilities for this series are endless and with CD Reiss’ cunning mind I cannot wait to see where she takes this couple.

“The worst decisions I’ve ever made, I made for a reason. You. You rose out of the destruction. Our life together will be built into the best from what survived the worst.”

If you have not read the free prequel, Cutting Edge, I highly recommend you do so (currently available on iBooks). For me, this book perfectly sets the scene for this couple and gives you their backstory as to how they met and the situations that they find themselves in. I read this book before Rough Edge and am glad I did. However, it was written after this book and can be read after.

“We’re going to build an entire life out of a war.”

Rough Edge is the story of Major Greyson (Grey) Frazier and Captain Caden St John, now on civvy street. Grey, now a practicing psychiatrist and Caden a heart surgeon, both having now retired from active service. Grey and Caden met while serving in Iraq, fell in love, got married and are now living their new lives in New York. A newly married couple, head over heels in love and looking forward to their future as husband and wife.

Grey and Caden have a fantastic sex life, but as their marriage progresses they border on rougher, animalistic sex that skates the lines of sadism/masochism until they tumble over the edge, embarking on the more darker side of breath play. Not all is at it seems and while I would love to go into details, I really can’t without giving away huge spoilers, so I am going to be deliberately vague.

“I had to hurt Greyson. I had to fuck her like a fighter. Mark her like a vandal. Break her like a champion.”

With flashbacks from past to present, CD Reiss expertly weaves the reader through the dark and light all the while delivering a complex, riveting read. A tale of pushed limits, unlimitless love and a foray into the unexpected that begins to take over and skirts the lines of dangerous. The story between the lines is intense, raw and emotionally honest and my heart was in my mouth so many times. I couldn’t read quick enough, I devoured the prequel and book in one night and was left open mouthed salivating for the next one. We don’t have long to wait, On the Edge releases on 12th June.

“I was her lover and her tormenter. Her husband and attacker. Her pain and my pleasure spinning in a centrifuge.”

This is one unpredictable read and I cannot wait to see where CD Reiss takes Grey and Caden on this tumultuous journey. One thing I am sure of, is the love that these two have for one and other, but will this be what ultimately breaks them too? I need the next book NOW!!

“Tomorrow, I’ll wake up in love again. Ready to conquer the world with my woman. Et cetera, et cetera.”

Excerpt:

In the dark, during the fundraising video, she leaned into me, taking my hand. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“Caden.” My name was more than a statement. It was a comment on how well she knew the animal, and how well she loved it.

If eyes could listen, hers did, gazing at me in the darkness. I couldn’t lie to her for much longer.

The entire invite list was watching the video. The bar was empty. The hallway lights were dimmed. The kitchen staff moved constantly and quietly to set up the buffet.

I laced my fingers in hers. She had a gold band we’d gotten out of expediency. No big sparkling rock. No sign I’d ever courted her properly before marrying her.

My father always said a man didn’t skip steps if he wanted to do something once.

I slid my cheek to hers and whispered in her ear, “I want to destroy you.”

Her hand tightened in mine so tightly I could feel our bones. Her glands must have fired, because the apples and the perfume melded and became something so uniquely her my balls ached—but not for simple release. For something more. An agreement of ownership.

Waiting wasn’t an option.

Pulling her by the hand, I headed for the hallway.

“Caden,” she said when we were away from the event, “slow down.”

I didn’t. I couldn’t. I pulled her down the carpeted steps to the lower level, stepping over a velvet rope at the bottom. The lights were out in the hall. Three doors led to three empty event rooms.

“What’s with you lately?” she asked.

“Are you saying no?”

“I’m asking a question.”

I backed into one of the rooms and pulled her in. It was dark but for light coming from under the doorways on each side. I walked in deeper, eyes adjusting quickly enough to avoid the tables and stacks of chairs on wheeled dollies.

“So am I.” I faced her. “Are you saying no?”

“What are you hoping I’ll say yes to?”

“I’m going to pull that dress up until I can get to these hard nipples.” I pinched them through the dress and she gasped. “Then I’ll bend you over one of these tables and fuck you so hard walking’s going to hurt. Are you saying no?”

“I’m not. But I want to know what’s going on with you.”

“Pull your dress up before I shred it.”

About the Author:

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets. Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels. She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood. If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
