Review ~ A Necessary Sin (The Sin Trilogy 1) by Georgia Cates

Reviewed by Donna ~ 5 Stars

“Into me … you see,”

My first five star read of 2015 goes to…Georgia Cates!! I have had this book on my kindle for a few weeks and was eager for it to get to the top of my list. I loved Georgia’s Beauty from Pain series so was itching to get my grabby hands on this one. Cover lust, check…Blurb lust, check…Book LOVE, check!!

I have to say that this was a fantastic read and for me is by far Georgia’s best book yet. For a first book in series this book serves its purpose by the bucket load. It is an addictive read; I could not put it down. The plot had me hooked as did the characters, there was nothing I disliked about this book and at the end all I was left wanting for, was more.

Bleu MacAllister is one ballsy woman, since she was twelve years old she has had one mission in life and that was to avenge her mother’s death. She has trained in martial arts, she was a police officer, she worked for the FBI, but to her these were not jobs, they were training. She has done everything she can to make herself the ultimate killer. She is strong, she is emotionally detached, she is fierce but most of all she is determined. Her mother’s death affected her in more ways than one and that one event has led her to be the woman that she is today. Her adopted fathers ailing health means that she has to bring her mission forward…revenge is near…off to Scotland she goes.

“Telling him I intended to hunt and execute Thane Breckenridge was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

I loved the setting for this book, being from the UK and recently attending the book signing event in Edinburgh, I could picture a lot of the scenes in this book and they only brought back fond memories. I love it when I can actually picture the surroundings; it always makes the book seem more real.

The family that she needs to infiltrate are a mafia type and are very security conscious. They are only friends with people within the group, they can only marry within the group, they are extremely intrinsic and this is all through fear of competitors and enemies finding a way in. There are rules and these are to never be broken but Bleu believes her way in is through the next in line to the “throne,” Sinclair Breckenridge. He is a lawyer and has nearly completed his training to take over from his father. Now Bleu just has to make her move. Being emotionally detached will have its benefits after all, but that was before she met Sinclair.

“Rule number ten: it’s all about the right move at the right time—pacing and patience. I’ll read his emotions and body language to know what needs to come next. A necessary sin. That’s what tonight is.”

I have to say, I found another BBF in Sinclair Breckenridge, or Sin as he is known by. He was an intense character, highly revered by all, he oozed confidence and his leadership qualities were there for all to see and adhere to. He spoke, you listened, he said jump, you said how high! He came across all dark, brooding and menacing but even in the beginning I could see little flickers of light lurking in the background.

This was similar to insta-lust but our Bleu makes him work for it and this is something that Sin is totally unaccustomed too. Sin is used to women falling over themselves to get a night with him so to come across a woman that isn’t really piques his interest. The character connection between these two was scorching and you felt it through the pages, page by page you felt their bond deepen. Sin is intrigued by Bleu; he loves the fact that she is feisty and fierce, yet loyal and protective. I loved the way that Georgia Cates gradually showed the change in Sin, slowly but surely you saw him believe in himself and Bleu; they were so well suited it was uncanny.

“I love you, Bleu MacAllister. I’ll always do what it takes to keep you safe, no matter the extreme.”

I have to admit, I was on tenterhooks throughout this book. You know that their relationship is unconventional and on paper should never happen and never last. It is with your heart in your throat that you continue reading knowing that this can only go south. I was so invested in their relationship though, the writing was perfect, I felt the chemistry, the emotion, the fear, the anticipation, I felt it all and I absolutely loved it. While the subject of revenge is at the forefront of the story it more or less takes a back seat throughout this book, it is always there lurking in the background but this for all intents and purposes is Sin and Bleu’s story and I cannot wait for February 9th for book 2, The Next Sin. For those that hate waiting, there is more good news…the third book in the Trilogy, One Last Sin releases on 23rd March.

“He didn’t kill my mother but he’s the spawn of the man who did. I’m supposed to be sickened by his touch, so why am I desperate to have more of it?”

I have to take my hat off to Georgia Cates, she nailed this one.

Falling Away - Chapter 5 Excerpt

"So, how did this happen?" I asked, holding the gauze on his skin, under the cuts, to catch the saline.

His abs flexed, probably from the cold fluid, since saline didn’t sting, as I poured it over the cuts, cleaning them.

He sucked in air through his teeth. "Some of the science kids have greenhouses on the roof," he grunted, and I almost laughed out loud. "Masters asked me to go up and make sure the roofs were closed, but I slipped coming back down the stairs. Scraped myself on some bolts."

Ouch.

I used the rest of the gauze to wipe up the solution, and then ripped open a package with a wet wipe and made sure the blood was cleared up.

"You should be using gloves," he pointed out. "You know? Blood and all."

"I thought any girl was safe with you," I shot back, tearing open bandages. "Isn’t that what you told me?"

Jax was silent for a minute, narrowing his eyes farther and watching me as I placed three rectangular bandages on his stomach.

"I said any girlfriend of mine," he finally clarified. "But you shouldn’t be so careless. Use gloves next time."

I ignored him, feeling weird on the occasions he acted like this. Jax had a habit of scolding me, sometimes acting as though he was protecting me, and then following it all up with being an asshole. I finally figured out condescension was his way of gaining superiority. Making others feel stupid.

I sat back, looking him in the eye and changing the subject. "Is anything else hurt?"

He hesitated only a moment. And then folded his arm back, lifting his right elbow to reveal the scratches I’d noticed earlier.

Repeating the same procedure, I stood up and leaned over him, catching the saline wash as it cascaded over his wound and into the gauze.

He hissed, and I blinked.

"Blow on it," he ordered.

"It doesn’t sting," I scoffed, knowing damn well that saline didn’t hurt.

"K.C., Jesus," he barked, wincing.

I rolled my eyes but gave in. Holding the underside of his arm—his hard triceps—I leaned down and released a slow, cool breeze over the scratches. Jax’s scent wafted over me again, and I desperately wanted to close my mouth so I could breathe him in through my nose.

But I didn’t. I could tell his eyes were on me.

"Why are you watching me?" I asked, wiping up the rest of the solution and blood.

I didn’t look at him, but I heard him swallow.

"This is just the first time you’ve ever made me feel good, is all," he replied in probably the most candid way I’d ever heard him speak.

I pinched my eyebrows together.

The first time I’d ever made him feel good. I didn’t know what to say to that. Hell, I had nothing to say to that.

Keeping quiet, I finished applying his bandages as fast as I could and didn’t meet his eyes again. He’d tried to be nice to me in high school. He’d tried to be a friend. Maybe friends with benefits but still a friend. Now here I was, forcing my attention on him, and he probably had no patience for me anymore.

"Can I ask you a question?" I ventured.

"What?"

"That night you drove Liam home . . ." I swallowed, smoothing my fingers over the bandage I’d fixed to his arm. "You said you had tattoos. Too many." I repeated his words, my eyes fixated on his forearm. "What did you mean?" I pressed, because clearly Jax didn’t sport any tattoos. His statement hadn’t made any sense.

Even though I hadn’t looked at him, I noticed his head turn away as he inhaled a slow, deep breath. Kind of as though he was getting ready to dive deep underwater and knew he wouldn’t be up for air for a while.

"Sorry," I said quietly, straightening up and crumpling the bandage wrappers in my fist. "I just . . . I don’t know . . ." I trailed off. "I just want to understand."

I finally met his eyes, and he studied me silently. I didn’t know if he was trying to figure out what to tell me or if he wanted to tell me anything at all. Funny thing was, I’d thought about what Jax said that night a lot over the years, and while I was curious, it wasn’t until I’d overheard his conversation with Jared today that I knew it had something to do with his childhood.

And I realized that I didn’t know Jaxon Trent at all.

He rubbed his forearm and narrowed his eyes briefly before relaxing. "If you could get a tattoo, what would it be?"

I blinked, shocked by his question. "Um." I laughed softly, thinking. "I thought about a set of angel wings, I guess. With one of the wings broken," I admitted.

"It has something to do with your past?"

I nodded. "Yes."

"And it’s something you want to remember?" he pressed.

"Yes."

"That’s why I don’t have any tattoos," he concluded. "People get tattoos for all kinds of reasons, but they’re always badges of what has made them who they are. I don’t care to remember what and who made me this way. The people that gave me life. The people that brought me up . . ." He shook his head, defiant. "The places I’ve seen or anything I’ve done. It’s all in my head, anyway. I don’t want it on my body, too. I don’t care about anything that much."

About the Author:

Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

A nursing student, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met.

Love Hurts is her debut novel and she is currently working on the next in the series along with whatever other voices are clamoring for attention in her mind.

Friday Frights ~ PNR Reviews ~ Afterlife (Afterlife Saga) by Stephanie Hudson

Reviewed by Shirley ~ 5 Stars

I was recommended this book by my daughter Donna. She had heard good things about it and passed it onto me as I do love a good paranormal book and I have got to say this book is awesome.

It weaves an incredible story and I loved the way I was kept guessing till virtually the end as to who and what one of the main
characters was, a certain Dominic Draven Mr Mystery himself personified.

The other main character is a young woman by the name of Keira, who has a very troubled past and was trying to put her life back together by moving from England to America to live with her older sister Libby who had married an American and moved to New Hampshire to be with him.

The story begins with Keira's life at her sisters and her new beginning. Keira wanted to go back to college and while out shopping with her sister she meets R J, a student at the college that Keira was going to. They hit it off straight away and R J invited Keira to come meet up with her friends and her so that she won't be the total new girl at college. They all arrange to go to the local nightclub called Afterlife which was owned by the elusive Dravens. It was the place to go especially when the Dravens hit town which was not often.

The Dravens kept their life a mystery and because of the extraordinary good looks of the elder Draven, Dominic, people flocked
to the nightclub when they were in town hoping he would notice them and to invite them up to their very private bar upstairs.

On the first night R J took Keira to Afterlife it happened to be the night the Dravens were there and while the Dravens made their way across the floor to go upstairs to their bar Dominic spotted Keira . It was a very intense look that Keira felt from him while it lasted.

After they moved upstairs R J and her friends couldn't get over how Dominic had actually noticed Keira as normally he kept his sight decidedly forward so as to not look at anyone. Keira didn't know what had hit her with that look it certainly left a deep
impression with her.

After that night Keira was having very intense dreams where Dominic was prominently in them and the one word that was coming through loud and clear was

"Mine"

As it happened her brother in law had arranged a job for Keira at Afterlife as a waitress as she had done bar work back in England which her sister was not very happy about as she didn't like the club much but Keira was looking forward to getting back to work again, but it also put her in the Draven's vicinity.

Keiras dreams were getting more frequent with Dominic seeming to want to spend time with her and the ending was always the same

His hand would find its way to the back of my neck and it
would send ripples of desire down my spine. My body
would arch upwards, slightly in response. His big strong
hand would hold all the back of my head and entwine his
fingers through my hair. I was glad I was unable to speak
as every fibre in my body wanted to let out a moan. He
would then lean his face to mine as though we were one
and his lips would gently touch mine, but he did not kiss me.
He just held them there slightly making contact. Then he
would whisper ...
"Sleep my Electus, sleep for me." And once more I would obey...

but when it seemed that life was getting better for Keira her past was catching up with her. Her nightmares began again, and this is where this story really kicks in, and Dominic's and Keira's romance hots up.

I quivered under his touch, unable to help the storm
of emotions that took over. I had waited what felt like
an eternity for this moment and if I had dreamt of it
every night for all time, it still wouldn't have come
close to the Heaven he took me to. I couldn't stop
my hands lifting to anchor his face to mine by holding
his neck. I never wanted this feeling to end and I think
if I had died right now, then I would have died knowing
the true meaning of lost in lust, faith in fate, happiness in
hope and finally, locked in love.

This is truly a very good book and I hope you will enjoy it is much as I. It is a real page turner and totally engrossing. I will certainly be following up with this saga to see how Dominic and Keira get on with their life. Brilliant book Ms Hudson.
