Release Day Blitz ~ Review, Excerpt & Giveaway ~ Temperance (The Arcanian Chronicles 1) by Ella Frank

Book Description:

“Tell me about this place. This…Arcania.”

What if your life as you knew it ceased to exist?

That is the question Naeve Brannigan and her three sisters are faced with on the eve of their 25th birthday.

Continuing a tradition they’ve hidden from their mother for years, the four women arrive at a tarot shop to have their futures told.

Only this time their futures aren’t predicted—they’re forever changed.

They’ve awoken in a strange time and place with no knowledge of how they got there. All they have to go by is the word of a man who claims to be family—a family they’ve never heard of.

He tells them of a world they could never have imagined. One that has been cursed by an Empress fueled by old revenge—revenge their mother appears to be at the center of.

As they fight to survive the people and dangers of an unknown land, they slowly begin to unravel its mysteries to find that they hold the key to saving this world…this Arcania.

The question that remains for each of them is: Who do you become when the you that you always were is no longer?

 Excerpt:

“Don’t. Make. A. Sound.”

The low, gravelly voice reverberated through her as she felt a tear escape the corner of her eye. The arm that was banded across her chest was full-on muscle as it easily held her in place against a body that was as impenetrable as a brick wall.

Naeve didn’t move a muscle, but she lowered her eyes the best she could and saw a black leather glove that went halfway up that thick forearm. As the hand on her right shoulder tightened, she grimaced and felt the tip of the knife press against her throat.

“Where is your other sister?”

Naeve remained silent, not sure she could even remember how to speak, and then she felt those fingers grip her shoulder harder as they spun her around and pulled her up close.

The sight that greeted her was like something from her worst nightmare.

She couldn’t have imagined ever feeling the terror she felt right then. For that reason alone, she’d never known that her response would be to become one hundred percent paralyzed.

As she stared up at the towering figure before her, she had to wonder if maybe she was already dead and he’d been sent to collect her. Cloaked from head to toe in nothing but black, he almost blended into the shadows except for the shiny blade he had pointed at her throat. She couldn’t make out a face behind the hood and mask, but all she continued to hope was that, if he planned to kill her, he’d do it fast.

“…Why don’t you tell me about this place? This…Arcania…”
“Come closer, and I will show you.”

Is there anything that Ella Frank cannot write? I have to admit, I am not a fantasy reader, yet I am an Ella Frank reader. I had signed up for this book just because of the author, I had not read the blurb or anything and did not realise that this was another change in genre, so with great trepidation and anticipation I went into the world of Arcania.

This is another one of those books that I could easily see made into a movie. Ella has proven her way with words many times and in this book she creates a visual masterpiece. It is one of those books that are so descriptive and so vivid and theatrical that you cannot help but imagine the characters on the big screen. I was whisked away to Arcania and was totally submerged into the plot, the characters and the story.

The story begins with four sisters that are quadruplets, yet they are all vastly different. Naeve is a blonde, Siobhan is a red head, Fiona a brunette and Audra has jet black hair. Celebrating their twenty fifth birthdays they decide to go and get their tarots read even though it has been forbidden by their mother, but what happens is entirely unexpected. Apparently twenty five is a major milestone for these girls, unbeknown to them, and when they “wake up” they find themselves in Arcania. Suddenly deposited into a place that is totally strange and alien to them, the girls begin their journey.

“Your parents as they once were, Naeve, and the world they left behind.”

Arcania is a realm of Sensualeers, Guardians, Imperial Guards, a Commander and an Empress, a realm of magic where life has been on the decline and all women had been banished to protect them, that is until the arrival of the quadruplets. The quadruplets have apparently been brought to Arcania because of their mother and their father who was a mortal guardian.

“Find the keys. Find the four keys…It’s not just the four keys…it’s the four children, and her. It’s always been her.”

So we have four women, now for the man candy!! We have two brothers, Ry’Ker and Mala’kai, Ry is the Commander’s right hand man and Kai is a law all unto himself. Both men, as you would expect are extremely good looking but sometimes their attitudes leave a lot to be desired. However, we have to remember that their life and ours are totally different. Li’Am and Si’Bastian are Commander and Sensualeer respectively and they are also father and son.

“He was like everything else in this strange, new world – a beautiful nightmare. Dark, dangerous and lethal. One she knew she should wake from but felt herself sliding deeper inside of.”

Empress Seraphine is Li’Am’s deranged sister and she is the evil force. With kleptors for eyes she is extremely powerful and has abilities that enable her to talk through the mind. She has one focus and will stop at nothing to get it, even if it is detrimental to Arcania.

“…had been crowned Empress and was known as ‘the ruler without mercy.’ She governed with brute intimidation to get what she wanted, solidifying the fears of the people when it came to their kind. Tyrannical and unloving, she had made sure that the people of Arcania shared her desolate fate – nothing was sacred.”

All the characters seem to be related in one way or another and I have to admit, it could get a bit confusing at times. However, this intricately weaved story is just the beginning of what I am sure is going to turn out to be a fantastic series. I really cannot delve any further into the story because this is one those books that needs to be read blind so that you can experience and understand it for yourself. But if you are a fan of fantasy then I am sure that this will tick all the boxes. Also, for people like me, who have hardly or never dabbled with this genre, pick it up, it is a great read, still with the romance that we love but with the added bonus of an entirely different setting. Amazing story and one that I will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment!

“Why?”
“Because, Maeve…I can.”

“Let’s just have a good time tonight without ending up on TMZ…”

I have followed this series from the very beginning and Luke Young never fails to deliver a humorous yet steamy hot book. One minute you are laughing out loud and will have tears rolling down your face and the next you will be fanning yourself, with pursed lips, chanting WOW…

As usual this group of friends lead exciting, busy lives. Full of drama, fun and hot sex this is one series that has a little bit for everybody. Continuing on from book 5, Victoria and Jim finally got married, Jillian and Brian finally got pregnant with twins and Jillian’s book finally made it to the big screen. This is where this book begins…

Jillian and Brian have a lot to deal with in this book; Jillian’s morning sickness creates no ends of problems, especially with what used to be a very active sex life. Production begins on the film and this also creates no ends of drama, especially when one of the cast members takes a particularly keen interest in Brian. We have shower drama, tennis drama, storm drama, sex therapy drama…yet while I was laughing my head off at the some of the situations that Brian always seems to get himself into there were a few that totally made me freeze.

I have to say there was one scene where my heart literally dropped to my stomach…I was no, no, no, no, no just damn NO! I was a whisper away from messaging Luke Young to give him a piece of my mind. The trouble with these characters is that they are now like friends; I have been reading about them for so long, it feels as if I have lived their life alongside them. The story and characters have woven their way into my heart and soul and if they hurt, I hurt and if they laugh I laugh. It is rare for an author to be able to ingratiate their characters like that, but Luke Young has managed it with this series.

These two couples have such a close relationship, the situations are real, the conversations are real, their dynamic is real and their life is just real. I think it is this that makes it so relatable. I love Victoria’s no filter and that she just comes out and says whatever pops into her head. The chapters involving the parents-in-law had me uncontrollably laughing with side splitting consequences.

“You don’t know what it was like growing up with them. It’s a wonder I wasn’t scarred for life.”

If you want a book that will make you laugh your head off yet make you all hot and steamy at the same time, then this is definitely the series for you. I can highly recommend them.

“Let’s take down that b**ch.”

Review ~ Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven

Reviewed by Donna ~ 4 Stars

“She can have all the faith in the world. All I’m capable of giving her is bad Romeo.”

For those that know me and my reviews, they know that I am a sucker for second chance romances and this one fell beautifully into that category. Between beautiful yet witty prose and the Romeo and Juliet theme running throughout the book I was totally captivated by Cassie and Ethan’s story.

Romeo, Romeo, where for art thy Romeo…well our Romeo in this case is Ethan Holt, is he bad? Well, personally I don’t think so. Ethan seemed disconnected with life in general, he was cut off, aloof, broody, he just seemed emotionally broken; disenchanted with life in general. He was a successful actor an up and coming star, but he was a man on a mission.

Cassie is our modern day Juliet, a natural, talented actress, but one that seems despondent with the opposite sex. She has obviously been burned…and badly. It is only once you get to see what has happened in the past that you finally begin to understand the dynamic and the past between them.

“Love at first sight is a myth invented by romance novel authors and Hollywood. It’s bullshit.”

This story is told in the present but with alternating chapters of the past. I must admit, at times this was frustrating because just as the story was beginning to come alive, you would then flash back to the past. For fluidity, I would have preferred fewer flashbacks, but with the flashbacks that were there to be longer, but that is just me.

It is during the flashbacks that you begin to understand the past that these two share. Through acting school these two connected and Ethan did not connect with anyone. I have to admit the difference between “past” Ethan and “present” Ethan is gargantuan and “past” Ethan was someone that irritated me…a lot. However, “present” Ethan was lush and was totally reformed from the man he was before. Now it was up to him to try and make up for his past mistakes and try and get his Juliet. Without Juliet, Romeo was nothing and that is exactly how Ethan felt in the present.

“Cassie, I felt like a ghost while I was away from you. Now, I want to feel real again.”

The present is Ethan and Cassie reunited on stage in a production of Romeo and Juliet, their chemistry is still undeniable and they literally set the stage on fire, but the past plays a huge part and this is something that Ethan needs to atone for. Cassie, on the other hand, needs to forgive, but is the past too raw, too fresh for her to forgive and forget? Cassie however is not the Cassie that Ethan once knew, gone is naïve and innocent Cassie. Ethan now has to contend with the emotionally broken, hold a grudge forever Cassie and those walls that she has built up to protect herself seem impenetrable. Ethan was the cause of their erection, can he also be the demolition man?

“I saw what I wanted to see. Felt what I wanted to feel. He just played his part. Sometimes he’s behind my eyes, weeping and exposed, and he’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. But it was an act. He’s an actor. And he’s very, very good.”

The connection between these two was undeniable and I was totally invested in their story. The stark differences between the past and the present leave you toying with your emotions and especially your opinion of Ethan. The “past” Ethan was a bit of an ass, yet you knew that something must have happened for him to be that way. Even though not all was revealed during Bad Romeo, I feel that the surface has been scratched and now I desperately want to know the nitty gritties.

“Believe me, I know. I don’t say this to make you feel bad, but between my self-imposed dry spell and doing this show with you, my balls are bluer than the entire cast of Avatar.”

For me, what made this book was the Romeo and Juliet setting, forever the romantic this book grabbed my emotions and despite the ups and downs with the characters, the angst, the tooing and froing, the sexual tension and sometimes the frustrating situations my pleasure never waned as I made my way through this book in one sitting. I cannot wait for what comes next and will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment of their story.
