Book Description:

From the bestselling author of Weightless and A Love Letter to Whiskey

Wren Ballard is trying to find herself.

She never expected to be divorced at twenty-seven, but now that the court date has passed, it’s official. The paperwork is final. Her feelings on it aren’t.

Spending the summer in a small mountain town outside Seattle is exactly what she needs. The peaceful scenery is a given, the cat with the croaky meow is a surprise, but the real kicker? A broody neighbor with nice arms, a strange reputation, and absolutely no interest in her.

Anderson Black is perfectly fine being lost.

He doesn’t care about the town’s new resident — he’s too busy fighting his own demons. But when he’s brought face to face with Wren, he can see her still-fresh wounds from a mile away. What he doesn’t see coming is his need to know who put them there — or his desperation to mend them.

Sometimes getting lost is the way to find yourself. Sometimes healing only adds a new scar. And sometimes the last place you expected to be is exactly where you find home.

Excerpt:

I stared at the piles of bags, debating which to tackle first before slowly loading them onto each arm one by one. Once I was red-faced and struggling and decided there was, in fact, no way I’d get them all in one trip, I turned to make my way inside the cabin. But I stopped short.

There was a man at the end of my driveway.

He was just standing there, staring at me, a large, rusted toolbox in one hand and rolled up sheet of paper in the other. Everything about him was hard — the bend in his brows, the edge of his jaw, the line of scruff that framed it. And because I was me, of course I noticed what he was wearing, and it was the first time in a long time that I’d seen someone who dressed for efficiency, not for style. His jeans were worn, but not dirty, with plenty of pockets that I could tell were each used in their own way. He donned a simple, deep red thermal with sleeves pushed up to his elbows and slight stains that ran down his chest and abdomen, and a charcoal gray hat sat low over his eyes, shielding them from the sun.

He was tan, and even from the distance his eyes sparked against the warm hue of his skin. They were bright — blue, maybe? Or green? I couldn’t be sure, and I let his potent appearance mesmerize me for just a moment more before I shifted, hoisting the bags in my right hand up enough for me to attempt a half wave.

If possible, his brow lowered further, and he simply stalked off, clearing the view of my driveway in seconds.

I frowned.

“Well, hello to you, too.”

About the Author:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

LIFT 4 Autism Online Auction: Monday, April 24 - Friday, April 28

Autism. A mystery to some. A way of life for others. A cause for all since it is now the fastest growing and most common disability in the US. 1 in every 68 children are diagnosed with Autism. Many of these kids will rely on their parents to some degree, depending on severity, all their lives, with estimated costs between 5 to 7 million dollars in services and care over their lifetime. Many of the services those living with Autism require are not covered by insurance. It is an expensive and difficult lifelong diagnosis to navigate. Authors Ginger Scott and Kennedy Ryan started LIFT 4 Autism a few years ago as a charitable initiative rallying the romance reading community in April, which is Autism Awareness/Acceptance month. All proceeds go to this year’s charitable partner Kulture City, who is doing amazing things for Autism families. Discover more about them at kulturecity.org. Specifically, LIFT will benefit Kulture City’s lifeBOKS program, which provides families with free kits to curtail wandering, a common and potentially life threatening challenge. Proceeds will also benefit Kulture City’s tablet program, which provides iPads to improve communication for non and limited verbal children on the spectrum to families who cannot afford them.

Our Review:

Reviewed by Donna ~ 4 stars
***ARC received for an honest review***

“If this was his destiny, was there really any place in it for me?”

Royal Disaster picks up a few weeks after Royal Affair with Dylan and Lydia finding their feet after their relationship was exposed to the public, the constant pressure of the press, being in the public eye and also, we cannot forget the email black mailer.

This book centres around Lydia’s integration into the aristocracy (or not) and the progression of her relationship with Dylan. Royal Disaster certainly highlights the class divide and especially that us and them mentality. It seems old fashioned prejudices are rife amongst the blue blood and the prospect of a Duke carrying on with an American commoner is certainly ruffling a few feathers, it seems the aristocracy want to carry on the tradition of breeding amongst royalty only.

“That morning I’d woken up feeling impossibly close to him, like the days was ours, like we could settle into our world. But in the past hour, I’d been reminded, once again, of the ways in which his life was a universe away from mine.”

Lydia really grew throughout this book, her confidence in her work especially, oozes from the pages and with every day you see her get stronger and stronger. Lydia is a woman that knows what she wants, she is fiercely independent and what you see is definitely what you get. Despite Dylan’s pressures for her to become reliant on him our American firecracker digs in her heels and fights his English charms at every turn. The only thing that Lydia wants out of her relationship with Dylan, is Dylan, the money and the status are just an unfortunate by product of the man that she has chosen.

“I’m waiting for the part when I get to support him through whatever it is he’s going through, when I get to feel more like part of a team and less like a…like a concubine…”

Parker Swift does give us some background on Dylan in this book that goes someway in explaining the way that Dylan is. Dylan is an impenetrable fortress, he has many secrets, he keeps everything to himself and carries around the weight of the world on his shoulders. Dylan is a man drowning in burdens whether it be to the aristocracy, to the family company, to his own architectural business or to Lydia herself. There is only so much one man can take and Dylan definitely has choices to make or succumb and take his last breath.

The relationship between Lydia and Dylan is definitely hard fought. With the pressures from family, the public, the press, the aristocracy in general and the blackmailer these two have a lot of fires to extinguish. I will say however, I never once disbelieved the love that these two had for one and other. Knighty and his Damsel’s love radiated off every page and you always knew that the battle for this relationship to stand the course were always going to be from outside interferences.

“I thought the best I could hope for in this life would be flickers of feigned intimacy. That I’d have to settle for the hollow pride of fulfilling those obligations alone. Then you came along. And you started filling in the cracks. You made joy the norm – it was rather un-British of you, actually…”

I loved the way that Lydia carried herself in this book, no matter whose company she was in she managed to stay true to herself and her roots while still being polite and dignified. It is hard at times to remember that she is still grieving for her father while planting new roots in a new country. This is a tumultuous time for Lydia and the constant press negativity, the misogynistic opinions from the blue bloods coupled with their feelings of grandiose and their self-opinionated beliefs all leave Lydia questioning whether she has a place in this world after all.

This was a great second book and definitely no filler, I loved the snippets into the Royals as a whole and this entire book had that regal air about it which is hard to achieve. There was nothing too far-fetched, all plot lines were believable and a natural progression within the story. The underlying threat of the blackmailer had you constantly reading with that sense of dread and being kept in the dark, along with Lydia, only intensified that fear. I will admit I shed a few tears in this book such is the character connection that I have for these two and all I can say is I was so glad for the last few chapters else it would have been a completely different story.

“And the world would learn what I already had: Throw a disaster our way, and see just how much stronger we are together.”

I cannot wait for Royal Treatment, I need to know what happens to these two going forward, with both their lives turned upside down you know they still have a battle ahead of them but am hoping that the intense love and support that they have for one and other will be enough to carry them through. With no support surrounding them, they need each other more than ever.

Excerpt:

Dylan urged me through the door to his bedroom, his palm spread widely across my lower back. “In you go,” he said firmly.
I stepped into the dark room, lit only by the light coming from the bathroom door.
Dylan moved behind me, to the side, and stood me in front of a leather club chair. I waited as he poured himself a glass of water and placed it on the table next to the chair after taking a long swig.
“What? No more Scotch?” I asked, following his eyes as he circled me, coming to stand behind me.
“I want my senses about me for this. You were bloody gorgeous tonight,” he said into my ear, his fingertips stroking my arms. “So perfectly yourself. I want to reward you. I want to sink into you. I want to goddamn consume you,” he said slowly, taking his time, and I gulped in anticipation. “And no more talking,” he said softly, finally settling into the chair before me and gazing up at me. “Undress.”
I giggled a little. “So it’s going to be that kind of night.”
He tsk-ed at me, wagging his finger as he sat down. “Shh, damsel. This will be better if you follow instructions.”
My skin was singing—it felt like there were a million little weather systems moving in the air around me, all electric, all feverish. My breathing was picking up.
I walked up to him, put my hands on the armrests of the chair where he sat, leaned over, and kissed him slowly on the lips. No tongue, just firm, warm lips.
“Can you unzip me at least?” I whispered, our faces centimeters apart, the air between us warming. Our eyes met, and my little challenge added heat to this game. He was getting ready to devour me.
I stood and turned, so my back was to him, and I felt him rise behind me. He dragged the zipper slowly down my back and slid his hands into the dress. They were so warm and felt so big, like he could grab me fully around my middle. His thumbs stroked my underarms, and the subtle movements caused a ripple, a shiver of anticipation.
The dress, now loose, slumped off my shoulders, making room for his hands. He unclasped my bra, and it fell into the dress. Then he pushed the whole thing off my arms and down my body, so it hung in front of me, and my bra spilled to the floor.
“On the bed, damsel.” He smacked my ass—hard. I smiled, eager, scurried to his majestic four-poster canopy bed, and perched myself on its edge. I bit my lip between my nervous teeth and sat on my hands. My hair drifted around my shoulders. The pit in my stomach and the round ache between my legs were getting sharper, firmer, more demanding. I wanted his hands on me, all over me. He was taking this too slowly, like he was stalking his prey.
Dylan reached into his bag, parked by the base of the bed, and lifted out a long coil of velvety-looking fabric, wider than rope, softer looking. “You game for this, sweetness?” I nodded hungrily, shamelessly. “Good. Then up at the headboard. Now.”
I crawled on all fours and turned back to look at Dylan stalking me. “Thought this through, did you?”
Smack.
Another crisp slap to my ass.
Right, no talking. But if that was my punishment, I might have to keep rebelling. I couldn’t stop the eager smile forming on my face, and Dylan shook his head. “Incorrigible.”

“That’s how you tell us apart in the dark. You see, a light’s night mark is its heartbeat. You know a man by his heart. You know a lighthouse by its beacon.”

Tiffany Reisz is one of my favourite authors so it pains me that I didn’t love this one as much as her others, whether they be the saucy, erotic reads of the Original Sinners series or the beautiful, engaging story telling of The Bourbon Thief. I desperately wanted to love this one, but for me, this was a book I started several times, yet just couldn’t get into and that was so frustrating.

““…I will love you and take care of you as long as you live, Faye”
“Don’t you mean as long as you live?”
He said no. He wasn’t interested in till death do us part. Even if he went first, he would find a way to take care of me. I treasure that vow. I hold it right here…But I’m still waiting for him to keep it.”

I loved the premise of the book, the writing as ever was perfection in its execution and the voice of Tiffany Reisz is one that I just find intoxicating and totally beguiling. Tiffany Reisz had obviously done her research and the snippets of history interspersed with this time travellers love story was fascinating. The chapters set in 1921 were a great flashback to the times and I clearly pictured Tiffany Reisz pouring over old cook books as she delivered the little details that really cemented the reader in the era in which she was writing. Lighthouse lore and history satiated my need for facts and history and for me, personally, it was the history lesson that kept me turning the pages.

“To think I spent my whole life believing time only went in one direction… Thought it was a river. Turns out it’s an ocean. Waves come in. Waves go out. Sometimes those waves take us with them.”

For me and I will probably be in the minority I had no character connection and anyone that knows me, knows that I need that for a book to work. I just felt that I knew too little about the characters to be able to empathise with them as individuals. Yes, I felt for Faye, after losing the love of her life, anyone would, but to understand her as a person, I felt bereft of information, I just needed a little more background. With regards to Carrick, again, no real pertinent background information, I had so many questions with regards to him, I would have loved a few chapters in his POV to maybe help understand the man behind the name.

“Whoever first said it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all had neither loved nor ever lost.”

I loved the side characters, Pat and Dolly, they both had their parts to play and I found myself enjoying scenes more when they were in them. I felt that the ending was rushed and rather confusing as so many loose ends and plot lines were frantically tied up. I did have a few issues with certain statements made that just didn’t add up and thought that inconsistencies like these would have been picked up in editing.

“This is me, Will…I’m just like this lighthouse. Still standing, still here. But I’m falling apart. The light’s off, and I don’t know how to turn it back on again.”

For those that loved Quantum Leap, this book definitely reminded me of that somewhat, albeit Faye had the ability to return to the same place at the same point in time. The logistics do not make sense but if you can open your mind and embrace the implausibility as miracle and magic then you won’t get too bogged down in the details. Once the book got going I did have the urge to finish and while for me it dragged in places I was focused on finding out how their story ended.
