Donna's 2014 5 Star Reads

So it is the end of the year and the question on everybody’s lips is always “So what was your favourite read of 2014?” This question, for me, is extremely hard. I get so invested in the books that I read that they become my children and to pick a favourite is like picking your favourite child and that is a big No No. However, I have my list of 5 star reads and I have chosen 12 books that to me stood out for one reason or another. In no particular order…

Archer's Voice by Mia Sheridan

This has been my favourite read of 2014 since January!! This is one book that I have already read about 8 times and that is no exaggeration. This book took a piece of my heart and soul and continues to do so with every re-read. The characters connected with me on every level and to this day their story still resonates deep within. The accolade goes to the extremely talented Mia Sheridan and our silent boy Archer Hale in Archer’s Voice.

Made by J M Darhower

The Sempre series is one of my all time favourites. I never thought I would love a mafia series, let alone adore it, but JM Darhower once again struck a chord with these amazing characters. There was one enigma among them and that was Corrado Moretti, this man was “The Kevlar Killer” stealth in everything he did, quiet but deadly. We never really got to really know him Sempre and Sempre Redemption and I was eager for me. When JM Darhower delivered Made I was in awe. There was so much more to Corrado and this is one story that will stay with me for a very long time and it only made me love him even more.

The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon

Amy Harmon never ceases to amaze, her writing style has had me hooked from the very first book I read of hers. I never thought that Amy could top Making Faces but to me The Law of Moses surpassed that. This book was beautifully written, the character connection was so strong that I felt everything. I lived and breathed this couple and once again these are characters that I often find myself thinking about.

The Saint by Tiffany Reisz

This is another one of my all time favourite series. For some it contains triggers but for me those did not bother me at all. I have followed these characters since the beginning and Tiffany Reisz has woven an intricate web that is totally spell binding. You never know where their lives will take them or what they will encounter on the way but as soon as you pick up a Tiffany Reisz book you know that you are going to be blown away. For me The Saint, so far is the best book of the series. Seeing how it all began struck chords deep within and to finally be a witness to the very beginning was something I will treasure.

Bang by E.K Blair

This book…this book…this book…it still freakin haunts me…I have been a huge fan of EK Blair since I read her first novel way back when. One of the highlights of my year was actually meeting her at the Edinburgh signing and she is just as awesome in the flesh as she is online. This book pushes the boundaries, it is a total head f**k but it is one amazing read. I am still numb on the inside and I cannot wait for ECHO. This is one book that is at the top of my “I can’t wait to read in 2015” list.

Bright Side by Kim Holden

This book by Kim Holden is one of my all time top tear jerkers, if this book does not make you cry, I will check your pulse. The characters in this book are beautiful on the inside and out and you cannot help but fall in love with them. Character connection is always at the top of my list for a good book and these will imprint themselves into your heart and soul. I cannot convey how freakin good this book is and I feel all the better for reading it, it will make you want to be a better person and to always look on the Bright Side.

Black Lies by Alessandra Torre

Alessandra Torre knocked me for six with this book. I have to admit that I am not the quickest or sharpest tool in the box when it comes to guessing plot twists but I am usually on the right track. This one however I never saw coming and was totally blindsided. Once again I was totally engrossed in the story and the characters, my mind was going a mile a minute trying to make sense of what I was reading. It was an edge of your seat read and totally un-put-down-able! This is one book that I will not forget in a hurry.

Rogue by Katy Evans

Katy Evans created one of my all time favourite BBF’s in Remington Tate and I was wary when she ventured into the stories of “other men.” However, Greyson King made his way onto my list in fine style. He was a man of few words but his actions more than made up for it. He was a character that was misunderstood and compelled to be the person that he was even though he didn’t want to be, but when the opportunity arose to change his life and the others around him, he grasped it with both hands. I love Katy Evan’s writing style and this book was another fantastic read from her.

Flat-Out Celeste by Jessica Park

The Flat Out series is one of my top YA reads. Jessica Park always manages to infuse her wit and humour into every one of her books and Flat-Out Celeste is no exception. Celeste was always one of those misunderstood characters that tried her best to fit in when in fact she was perfect just the way she was, she just needed to believe. Yes, she was different, but that difference made her awesome, I love this girl with a passion and it was such a treat to see her grow up and get the life that she deserved.

Love, In English by Karina Halle

Karina Halle is one extremely talented author and this was her first foray into a contemporary romance and she nailed it. These characters once again cemented themselves into my heart and soul and I was willing for them to succeed. While they did not meet in the best circumstances they both knew that this was a “real” thing and went above and beyond to make sure they tried their hardest to see if it would work. This was the first book about this couple and at the end I was itching for more.

Heart in Wire by R.L. Griffin

The By A Thread series by RL Griffin was one that I stumbled across while trawling Amazon. The synopsis pulled me in and I began a journey that I will never forget. Stella and the gang became my friends, I was totally invested in this series and this was one of the first romantic suspense genre books I picked up and loved. If you love FBI type dramas interspersed with suspense and romance you will love this series. There was one integral character that needed his own story, I was one of the people that begged RL Griffin to write this book so when Patrick’s story was born I dived in. This book was emotional for me because as I said above I had an intense bond with this gang and this book tore me in two. Although it was always the right ending for Stella, I couldn’t help but cry for Patrick.

Under Different Stars by Amy Bartol

I am not a huge paranormal reader but when Amy Bartol’s Premonition series was recommended to me by someone I trusted implicitly I dived in and so began a love affair with all things Amy Bartol. Under Different Stars is a new series by Amy and once again she managed to magically transport me to places one can only dream about. Her writing style is so vivid that I can picture everything and so emotive that I feel everything. When reading I can put myself in the characters shoes and walk through the book as if I was there. That is no mean feat and one that Amy Bartol nails with every book. Amy Bartol is at the top of my favourite paranormal authors.
