Book Description:

My name is Calla Price and I’m drowning.

My new world is a dark, dark ocean and I’m being pulled under by secrets.

Can I trust anyone? I don’t know anymore.

The lies are spirals. They twist and turn, binding me with their thorns and serpentine tongues. And just when I think I have it figured out, everything is pulled out from under me.

I’m entangled in the darkness.

But the truth will set me free.

It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it. But even though it shines and glimmers, it has glistening fangs and I know it will shred me.

Are you scared?

I am.

“Protect me. Protect me. Protect me.”

I have to say that when I finished this book I was speechless, my brain was frazzled and I struggled to form coherent sentences. I was totally immersed in this story and just when you think you know what is going to happen, something comes along and swipes the rug from under you. Courtney Cole has this knack of leading you one way, only to do a total 180 and take you completely in the other direction and your brain struggles to keep up, you have to be on your toes and absorb what you are reading, I am sure the clues are there, but for me it was just one total mind bender of a book, but it was so so good. This is one of those reads where I was thinking about it for days after. I have theories on theories on theories, none of which I am sure are correct, but I still plot, even if it is just to release all the mumbo jumbo I have whirring around my brain at the moment.

“The end is the beginning.”

This book will keep you glued to the pages, you will be frustrated and confused but you will be gripping your kindle for dear life as Courtney Cole dazzles you with another instalment of an amazingly executed plot, that is so well written you cannot help but sit back and appreciate it. I am in awe and I am seriously wondering how her mind works, or should I just be scared?

“There’s savagery here, there’s grace. But above all, there’s oblivion and no matter what I do, I will be sucked into it.”

I found myself constantly wondering what was real, was it a figment of imagination, could it be dreams, could it be hallucinations or is it just the truth staring you straight in the face? You can’t help but question everything you read, but as you begin to digest and try to comprehend what you are reading you cannot help but analyse, or in my case over analyse. I highlighted like crazy so that I could go back over major plot points but after going back, it still doesn’t make any sense which only leads me to the conclusion that I still have no freaking idea what is going on and that is the master stroke that Courtney Cole pulls in this series, she has me hood winked, I am flailing about blindly but this is one story that I cannot shake and one story that I cannot wait to read the conclusion.

“I’m the rabbitrabbitrabbit and I’ll never be free.”

I am not going to go into any details as with a book such as this you need to read it for yourself, draw your own conclusions, have your own theories, try to comprehend what you are reading and formulate the points for yourself. You will probably be like me and end up with a migraine but you cannot help but cling to every morsel that Courtney Cole throws at you and devour it like it was your last meal.

“…and I’m brave, but my bravery will get me eaten. Whether he wants to be or not, he’s a wolf. And I’m a lamb.”

The setting changes in this book with Calla going back to Dare’s home, Whitley Hall, with a spooky and sombre setting such as is this stately home you cannot help but be drawn even further into this story. The vivid imagery that Courtney Cole conveys through her words only draws you further into Calla’s plight and gives the words you are reading life and a vision. The writing was so atmospheric, I had goose bumps, chills and shivers, I felt the fear, I was scared, my heart was pounding but that is the amazing thing about this book, it makes you feel.

“Run, little mouse. The hawk is coming, and you’re going to get eaten.”

There are a plethora of new characters introduced that only adds to the complexities of this story and will have you once again trying to unravel who is good, who is bad, who is evil, who has a hidden agenda, is all as it seems or is it really as bad as I think? At the end of the day I cannot wait for Lux, for now I have given up trying to fathom where Courtney Cole is going to take me, I am just going to sit back and enjoy the ride, I know it is going to be a roller coaster, I know it is going to be mind bending but I know that I will love every single word, every single scene, every bit of dialogue. The end is in sight, but I will I still be sane by the end? That is the million dollar question!!

“We’re all a bit mad, aren’t we?”
