Reviewed by Donna ~  5 stars

“Sometimes people paint themselves the shade they think they deserve and you have to dig deep to see their true color.”

I found Dawn L Chiletz in December with her quirky cover for The Fabulist and I adored that book. When I saw that she had another release I just had to 1click and dive in. Was ‘The Fabulist’ a one off or had I found another author that I just “clicked” with? I can honestly say, me and this author are going to have a whole lot of history, I adore this authors voice, I love her honest and relatable characters, I love the emotion that she manages to evoke effortlessly and I love that her stories are unique and inherently captivating. Confessions of a Carpool Captive had me in tears of laughter and tears of heart break but most of all I experienced this journey along with the rest of them, a journey I loved every single step of the way.

“‘There are many roads in life and we choose which path is right for us. Just remember, it’s not about how fast you get there. It’s the journey that matters most. Live for the journey.’”

Confessions of a Carpool Captive is a RomCom and contemporary romance with Dawn L Chiletz’s hilarious brand of humour smattered throughout. Our heroine is a woman that will test your patience, but a woman that you will inherently love and want to find her happy ever after. Our hero is the stuff that book boyfriends are made of and Finn has definitely left his mark and catapulted himself onto my BBF list.

“I think it’s time you finally show me how you drive.”

Liz is an introvert and loves nothing more than her own company, she hates idle chit chat and keeps herself to herself. Liz lives in the bubble of Liz, where her emotions are safe and her walls are firmly erect. Having been hurt in the past her heart is an impenetrable fortress and her unapproachable demeanour is the fallout from this and a reflection of her upbringing. Liz was an oops baby, born to relatively old parents who had long given up hope of the blessing of a child. As such, Liz was old before her time, but none the less, she adored her parents and when her father died, he took a huge piece of her with him.

“I stare at the man who could be my everything, or who could completely destroy me.”

Finn is a marketing manager and is the total opposite of Liz. He is the epitome of happy-go-lucky, he sees the best in everything and everyone, he is perpetually happy, charming, would do anything for anyone and had the hugest of hearts. Finn is also extremely persistent and it was this trait that he needed the most if he was ever to penetrate the walls of Liz.

“…when I met you, it was like finding the other half of my soul.”

These two meet on one fraught journey into work, Finn pulled over by a cop in the carpool lane and Liz a gawker laughing at Finn’s expense. Finn was new to the company and had only met Liz on the usual introductions round. Now knowing that he could take advantage of the carpool lane if he could persuade Liz to share his ride he was a man on a mission and Finn does not give up easily.

“Don’t you see how good we are together? We fit. Tell me you care about me as much as I care about you. Stay. Make the choice to fight for us.”

These two together were hilarious and yet totally captivating. The dry banter, the wit and sarcasm had me laughing out loud and yet both of their vulnerabilities brought me to my knees at the same time. Finn and Liz wheedled their way into my heart and it this character connection that made this book the gem it was. When Liz and Finn’s carpool becomes five, the shenanigans really begin and it is these friendships that really open up Liz as a person whether she was willing or not. These friendships were contagious and I loved the camaraderie between this group of misfits. Their union may have been an out for Liz, but forever friendships were made.

“He’s always been the captor and I, his prisoner, both of his carpool and of his game.”

I loved everything about this book, the comedic timing was on point, the dialogue was fantastic and the character connection was sublime. This was one of those books that I never wanted to end and characters I did not want to be separated from. I cannot wait to see what this author delivers next, I for one will be at the front of the queue.

***ARC received for an honest review***

“Every time with him felt like the first time, and part of me still couldn’t believe that it was real. That we could do this, be together in every way…that he was mine.”

Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine delivered the perfect ending for the perfect couple, yes, this book is pure unadulterated fluff, with a side of humour and of course some off the charts, steaming hot M/M action, but that is what this ending warranted and it was absolute perfection. This book for me was bittersweet, it was an ending I was desperate for, but a series I never wanted to end. With many couples still together, some with rings, some not, I hold out hope that maybe, their stories will continue and these two will feature at some point.

“As our bodies moved together, the rawness of the moment wasn’t lost on me. I could feel the sweat, the pre-cum, and lube aiding to the animalistic act taking place on the bed, and it just ramped this moment up even more. We’d had the sweet. We’d had the tender. And right here in this moment, it was all primal. I was making him mine in all the ways I possibly could, and Ace was letting me. Fuck, was he ever.”

Ace and Dylan’s story has been a fairy tale from the very beginning, a Cinderella of sorts and Dylan had definitely met his Prince Charming. Throughout this whole story though, I have never ever once questioned their feelings and love towards one and other and that love is only cemented throughout Wedlocked. There will not be a dry eye in the house as these two go from Dylan Prescott and Ace Locke to Mr and Mr Locke-Prescott. Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine delivered a stunning, heart-felt and emotional wedding befitting of a couple head over heels in love.

“You are everything I never dreamed I could have… You’re so damn perfect for me, Dylan. So. Damn. Perfect.”

We are treated to the shenanigans involved in planning the wedding of the century, of course the bachelor party and then the crème de la crème of weddings. All our favourite characters have a huge part to play and this was a perfect culmination to both authors series. For me, crossovers rarely work, but with these two series it is like they have always been family from the very start. The camaraderie and high jinks and love that these friends have for one and other is prevalent on every page and this was the perfect marriage of both worlds.

“If Dylan left me, nothing would make me happy anymore anyway. Not even millions of dollars.”

We have little angst in the form of Dylan’s biological mother, but her venom is soon snuffed out and I am glad that her poison did not detract from the message throughout this book. This was a celebration in all its glory, a heart-warming, soul-lifting, fit to bursting celebration and it was more than I could have ever hoped for. All I need now is for a certain lawyer and a hot bar owner to pop their wedding cherry too and then I will walk around with a perpetual smile.

“There’s no settling over here. That’s a dirty word reserved for boring types who bow down to society’s expectations. No offense.”
“All has been taken. You’re just one big offense, Logan. How does Tate put up with you?”
“With a firm hand and a full mouth. These are the two things that keep me…in check.”

“SO YOU’RE GONNA want to keep your toes on the tail of the board and grip the rails under your chest like this,” Dylan said as he lay across the surfboard to show me the basics of his favorite pastime on the secluded stretch of beach. Not that I was paying much attention to the words coming out of his mouth. I was much more interested in the way his muscles flexed beneath the skintight Body Glove wetsuit he wore.

As he pushed himself up into a standing position, my gaze traveled down the broad expanse of his back and down to his ass.

“See how my dominant leg is in the back, and— Ace? Are you paying attention?”

“Mhmm,” I murmured as I bit down on my lower lip and continued my perusal.

Dylan turned to face me, and his hands went to his hips. “Oh yeah?” he said when I looked up. “What did I just say?”

Taking a step forward, I gave him a cocky grin and tugged him off the surfboard and onto the sand until he was flush against me. Then I let my hands roam down over the firm, round muscles of his ass. “Something about being a dominant in the back,” I said, nipping at his lobe. “So why don’t you turn around?”

A groan of frustration left Dylan then, but his head tilted to the side to let my lips trail down his neck. “You’re not gonna feel so cocky when you can’t get up on that board.”

“Oh, I can always get it up, don’t you worry.”

His hands covered my chest and he gently pushed me away. “How about you prove it, hotshot?” Then he pointed to the longboard I’d rented for the weekend. “Why don’t you show me how it’s done.”

“It’s more fun watching you.”

“Ace. Get your ass on that board.”

I squinted in the sun and grinned. “You gonna be this bossy all weekend?”

“If you’re lucky.”

I took a step back so I was by my board, and crossed my arms. I had my wetsuit on, but it was still undone and hanging around my hips while Dylan walked me through this process step by step, and my move had the desired effect. He rubbed a hand up the back of his neck and over his hair, leaving it tousled and oh so sexy.

“What?” I asked. “I’m back on my side of the board.”

“Don’t try and act innocent with me, Locke. I’m trying to teach you a new skill. One that will keep you from hurting yourself. And you’re standing there being all…” He waved his hand up and down, gesturing to my exposed upper body.

“See. Stop it,” he said, and then pointed to the board. “And zip up that damn wetsuit so I can’t see all your muscles.”

I arched a brow as I moved to slip my arms through the stretchy synthetic material, and when I reached for the zipper and pulled it up to the base of my skull, Dylan groaned.

“Okay, that’s almost worse than no wetsuit.”

“I’m sorry. You’re not checking me out, are you? Because you’re supposed to be paying close attention to teaching me something that could save my life,” I said as I turned around and made a show of bending down to get on the board.

“You having fun right now?” Dylan asked.

“Maybe a little.”

“Yeah, well, let’s hope that holds true when the wave dumps you on your ass.”

I let out a sigh and gripped the board just as he’d told me, because the truth of the matter was, I had never surfed a day in my life. I grew up in Chicago, for God’s sake. But Dylan, with his sun-kissed hair, long, lean body, and eyes the color of the sea, looked right at home with the sun shining down on him as his feet sank into the sand by my head.

“Let’s try this a couple more times here on land, and then we’ll get you out in the water. We won’t have you trying to stand up just yet. But if you can get the hang of at least catching the wave into the shore, we might be able to progress.” He crouched down and said, “Remember, toes on the tail of the board and grip the rails, and then push up.”

As I did as he instructed, I paused in the push-up position and was rewarded when he leaned in and took my lips in a sweet kiss.

“Again,” he whispered, and I moved back down to repeat the move, and this time when I paused, I was rewarded with a deeper kiss. When he pulled away too soon, I grumbled and he laughed, straightening. “Any more of that and we won’t make it into the water. On your feet, Locke, it’s time to hit the waves.”

Graham Russell and I weren’t made for one another.

I was driven by emotion; he was apathetic. I dreamed while he lived in nightmares. I cried when he had no tears to shed.

Despite his frozen heart and my readiness to run, we sometimes shared seconds. Seconds when our eyes locked and we saw each other’s secrets. Seconds when his lips tasted my fears, and I breathed in his pains. Seconds when we both imagined what it would be like to love one another.

Those seconds left us floating, but when reality knocked us sideways, gravity forced us to descend.

Graham Russell wasn’t a man who knew how to love, and I wasn’t a woman who knew how to either. Yet if I had the chance to fall again, I’d fall with him forever.

Even if we were destined to crash against solid ground.

The blinding beams of flashing lights make me quickly refocus my attention. I stretch my neck in an attempt to see five cars ahead. We’re moving at a snail’s pace as usual and I’m certain I’ll get an eye-full of whatever shenanigans are going on today once I get closer. I’m not afraid to admit that I take great pleasure in other people’s driving woes. It’s like watching bad porn; you can’t look away because your eyes are glued open in horror and you’re secretly afraid of missing something. Watching people get pulled over is my one pleasure on this long-ass drive every day. There’s usually at least one good scene a day.

As I inch closer, I can’t help but speculate what happened this time. Once, I swear I saw ten people climb out of a Ford Focus. The only thing that would have made watching them all fall out over each other even more hysterical would have been if they were dressed as clowns.

The officer walks around the side of the shiny, expensive-looking, black SUV just as I inch closer. He curls his finger and the driver steps out. I can only see the back of his head, but he’s wearing a tailored suit and he’s tall, slender, and sculpted. The officer motions to his passenger before rubbing his hand over his face. The driver leans back into the car, I suppose to say something to her. She’s wearing what seems to be a scarf over her head and is completely immobile. I wonder if it’s an old woman. Maybe she’s in shock. What did he do to get pulled over? My mind works overtime trying to decipher his faux pas.

I glance over at the blue notebook on my passenger seat. I love inventing stories. It’s my favorite pastime while I drive. Actually, in general. As I pass people on my commute, I try to decide who they are, where they are going, and what their story is. Maybe someday I’ll get the courage to write a book. But for now, I just keep a notebook of all my favorite highway adventures and journal anything interesting in my day.

The man seems to be tugging on the woman’s arm.

I gasp loudly. He literally pulls her out the driver’s side door as I arrive at his bumper. After my initial shock passes, I almost piss myself laughing. His passenger is a woman, but she’s full of hot air. Her dress blows open in the breeze and I see her perky plastic boobs. What kind of man has a blow-up doll? Maybe he takes her everywhere in case he needs to get off. I picture him curled up next to her at night, stroking her hair.

He positions her next to him as if she’s standing and places his arm around her. I’m laughing so hard, I feel tears in my eyes. This is going to be the beginning of a great story, I can feel it.

About the Author:

Dawn L. Chiletz is the author of The Contest, Waiting to Lose, Enough, Can’t You See, The Fabulist and Confessions of a Carpool Captive.

“Sarcasm and humor are my favorite tools. I write whatever I’m feeling. Sometimes that means a romance, a mystery, a thriller, or a tear-jerker. I like giving everything a little twist and I try to stay original. I hope people like not knowing what to expect from me. I never know what I’ll write next either.”

Dawn currently resides in Illinois with her husband, two boys, and three dogs. When she’s not binge writing or reading, you’ll most likely find her on Facebook or playing taxi driver to her kids.

Co-Wrecker by Meghan Quinn ~ 4 stars

Book Description:

What do ice cream and Sadie Montgomery have in common? They're both ice cold, but one taste is never enough.

I wanted to be friends — I would have even settled for her seeing me as anything but a nerd — but there was no getting through. So just like any hard-headed, red-blooded man out there, I made up my mind.

I’d make my coworker fall for me.

I’d like to say it was simple, but like every other epic love story, all it took was one drunken night and a lot of naked courage to get the girl. For a moment, at least.

Love with a coworker is never simple, especially since Sadie’s trying to keep us on the low. Not to mention her persistent ex-boyfriend who won’t leave her alone. But I’ve never been good at giving up, and I don’t plan to start now.

The whole thing is a recipe for a rocky road, but I plan to eat the whole gallon, no matter how bad the brain freeze.

“…that’s the problem with shame. Shame doesn’t like company. Shame’s not something that likes to be shared.”

Meghan Quinn’s ability to make me laugh holds no bounds, this author just has to type the word “the” and I’m laughing…seriously though, Meghan Quinn is just a natural when it comes to romantic comedy. After reading Co-Wrecker I will never look at baseboards, a marriage proposal, liberal Europeans, ice-cream and bats without bursting out laughing, seriously I had floods of tears, but tears from hysterical laughter. This was the perfect book at the perfect time, laughs were desperately needed and Meghan Quinn more than delivered.

“She lost her socks. Couldn’t find them.”
“Oh yeah? ...Did you search her vagina well enough? Or are you going to take a second look?”

I love a geek, especially a glasses wearing geek, I was one…once…but nowhere near as attractive or outgoing as Andrew. Despite his passion for calculators, Derek Jeter and Tron our Andrew has personality. Andrews personality was infectious, his innate wit and comedic timing was perfect and the dialogue was sincere yet cheeky. I loved everything about Andrew, there was nothing to hate, he was the kind of character that you just click with, he rubs off on you, in all the right ways (wink wink).

“He’s kind, sweet, handsome, smart, and has a good head on his shoulders. He’s a four-leaf clover in a field of weeds; you don’t let men like him slip through your fingers.”

Sadie is a woman that came from a rough background yet made the most of it. Sadie was extremely intelligent, was valedictorian, got a scholarship to Cornel…until she gave it up. Sadie had her reasons and now she finds herself just existing. Sadie has lost her smiles, lost her personality and has turned into a bristly, cough syrup drinking, sour puss that needs to find her true self once again.

“Within twenty-four hours, he’s firmly placed himself in my life when I believed there were no vacancies.”

Andrew and Sadie’s paths cross when Andrew takes a summer job at the restaurant where Sadie works. Training newbies is Sadie’s idea of hell, even if they are decent eye candy. While there is plenty of candy in the toppings they find themselves using every day, the only candy these two are interested in is each other. Sadie has baggage, trust issues and is closed off. Andrew is persistent, compassionate, understanding but sometimes that is not enough, sometimes tough love is the only love.

“I love you, Andrew, but you’ve never been able to be just friends with a girl. You always hand over your heart.”

Andrew and Sadie were perfect for one and other, they complemented one and other but Andrew was far from a settler, he didn’t want a piece of Sadie, he wanted all of her. I adored Andrew for forcing Sadie to love herself first and foremost, to sort herself and her issues out. Meghan Quinn delivers a book littered with some fantastic side characters that all had their parts to play. I loved Tucker and he was another guy with a huge heart and I would love to see him get his happy ever after, the guy deserves it.

In summary, this was a cute, swoon-worthy romance that was light on angst and huge in heart. Hilarious in places and sensitive when needed. Another winner from Meghan Quinn.

Knowing I will probably regret this, I lift from the freezer, ice cream scraper in hand, and jerk toward Sadie just in time to slip on some melted ice on the floor shooting me across the fountain and straight into Sadie.

But not just Sadie; straight into her chest—her billowing, womanly chest. It’s a satisfyingly soft cushion for my head but from her instant outrage, I’m going to guess she’s not keen on me using her breasts as a pillow.

“What the hell are you doing?” she asks, trying to back away, difficult when I’ve got her pinned against the counter.

Fumbling to get some kind of grasp on my falling body, scraper still in hand, I give her a bit of motor boat—not on purpose—and muffle in her breasts, “I’m sowwy.”

“Get off me.”

“I’m twying,” I say, finally getting a grip on the counter behind her and standing tall. Glasses askew, hat on the floor, and a smothered feeling on my face, I straighten my apron and clear my throat. “My apologies.” Her friend is laughing, hand on her stomach, as I push my glasses back on my nose. “Although, I’m grateful for your sturdy bosom for catching my fall. It might have been a twisty straw to the eye, and I’m not sure my glasses would have held up on such an impact.”

Sturdy bosom? Shit, Andrew, don’t fucking say words like bosom. And for the love of God, don’t say a woman has a STURDY bosom. Say words like tits. Tits are more manly.

“Tits,” I mutter.

“Excuse me?” Sadie has the look of horror on her face.

Fuck, did I say that out loud?

“I think he said tits, Sadie,” her friend cuts in, thumbing through the straw holder. Yup, I said tits out loud.

“I heard him, Smills,” Sadie mutters under her breath.

Glaring at me, looking for an answer, I shrug my shoulders, because I have nothing. No way of digging myself out of this one. Funny how your brain can literally stop working the minute you need it the most. Come on, old fella, kick it into high gear. Come up with something witty, something snarky, something that will put a Band-Aid over this rather raw and embarrassing incident.

But, good fuck. I just had my face in her chest. What man could come back quickly from that?

“Well . . .” Sadie has her arms crossed over her bosom, waiting for an answer. No. Her arms are crossed over her breasts. Shit. Shit

Nerves crawl up the back of my neck, igniting my ears into lava levels of heat. Crap. Just say anything.

Clearing my throat, I pat her shoulder and say, “Sturdy tits.”

And here I thought it couldn’t get any worse, at least my hand didn’t pat down her breast to see if her nipples were made of steel, or to see if her areolas consist of chain-link mesh. You have to look at the positive.
